ancient

times,

people

would

use

a

sedan

chair

to

travel

between

places.Highrankingofficialswoulduseagreenpaintedchair,redwas

forbidden.

Larger

homes

in

Suzhou

came

toincludea

sedan

hall

inside

the

main

gate

where

chairs

could

be

set

downundercover.•Projective

window

to

the

world,

same

as

the

Emperor

always

hadin

his

ernment-runweavinganddyeingbureau

inSuzhou

whose

task

itwas

tosupervisetheproductionoftextileswhichwereusedbytheimperial

familyandexportedtoforeigncountriesasfarawayasEurope,Africa

and

the

Americas.

Many

famous

embroiderers

mixed

inSuzhoucircles

of

that

time

and

were

ashighly

regarded

as

the

city’s

scholars

and

literati.•Following

the

sequence

of

spaces,

the

guests

enter

a

semi

private

zone

tocheck

in.

Silk

panels

are

suspended

from

the

ceiling

as

if

dyed

fabric

sheets

left

to

dry.

Intricate

patterns

inspired

of

famous

Song

brocades

are

picked

up

incarpetartwork

and

staff

uniforms.•明朝宫廷于图轴设立纺织漂染局，主要为了监督皇家所用布料的制作，同时也出口到外国如欧洲、非洲与美洲。当时苏州著名刺绣家的地位与苏州学者与文人平起平坐。•按照空间顺序，宾客进入半私人区域登记入住。丝绸饰板悬挂天花，如同晾干漂染后的布料。精细图案灵感取自宋锦，可从地毯图案与员工制服中目睹。•feature

counter

the

feature

of

the

space

-

perfect

stage

for

the

barkeeper’s

theatre

when

night

sets

and

the

space

becomes

alive.

the

walls,

carved

screens

show

local

opera

deveoped

under

the

Ming

dynasty

in

the

city

of

Kunshan

near

Suzhou.

It

is

one

of

the

oldest

forms

of

Chinese

opera

still

per-

formed

today

and

listed

under

UNESCO’s

Intangible

cultural

Heritage

of

Humanity.•Stage

equipment

is

kept

to

a

minimum

to

make

the

actor’s

costume

and

make

up

stand

out.

There

is

no

curtain,

and

few

props:

sometimes

a

table

and

a

chair.

The

stage

setting,

like

the

costumes,

is

not

meant

to

be

realistic.The

actors

appeal

to

theaudience’s

imagination

and

conjure

up

a

scene

or

a

setting

with

words,

gestures,

and

music.

The

costumes

are

elaborate

exaggerated

versions

of

the

style

of

dress

during

the

Ming

Dynasty

and

make

no

attempt

to

fit

the

time

or

place

of

the

action.

For

instance,

in

many

roles,

the

performers

wear

robes

with

extremely

long

white

sleeves

call

“water

sleeves”,

which

essentially

serve

as

props

to

accent

their

dance
