CurrentStatusofAIUseinSchoolsand
EmergingRisks
Artificialintelligence(AI)hascontinuedtoaltertheeducational
experiencesofteachers,students,andparentsduringthe2024-25schoolyear.ThefrequencyandvarietyofAIusescontinuestogrow;atthesametime,theincreaseduseofAIineducationalsettingsiscorrelatedwith
heightenedriskstostudents.Thefollowingsectiondetailsthecurrent
statusofAIuseinschoolsalongwithfouremergingrisksassociatedwiththistechnology,allofwhichincreasethemorethataschoolusesAI:
•Databreachesorransomwareattacks;
•Tech-enabledsexualharassmentandbullying;
•AIsystemsthatdonotworkasintended;and
•Troublinginteractionsbetweenstudentsandtechnology.
IdentifyingtheconcreterisksthataccompanytheuseofAIinschools
enableseducators,schooladministrators,policymakers,andcommunitiestomountpreventionandresponseeffortssuchthatthepositiveusesofAIdonotinadvertentlyharmstudents.
