somethingrewarding,likeeatinganice-tastingfood,whichmakethemfeelsatisfied.Inthiscase,rewardsare

greaterforteens,whichmotivatesthemtoseekhigher-riskexperiences.

ButSteinbergthoughtpeerpressuremightalsohaveitspositiveside.Inthelateststudy,Steinberg’steam

usedacardgametoresearchhowpeersaffectthewayyoungpeoplegatherandapplyinformation.Itinvolved

101teenageboyswhoplayedeitheraloneorwiththreepeers.Theychosecardsfromfourdecks(牌堆):two

deckshad“good”cards,andtwo“bad”ones.Playerswithpeersweremorewillingtotakerisks,tryingtofigure

outwhichdeckscouldhelpthemtowin.Theresultsshowedthatteensplayingwiththeirpeersengageinmore

healthier,comparedwiththosegrowninisolation,whentheyweregrownnextto“goodneighbors”,suchasbasil.

Remarkably,thescientistsgotthesameresultevenwhentheplantswereseparatedbyblackplasticsothat

theycouldnotexchangelightorchemicalsignals.

Thescientistssaidthestudyisgroundbreakingbutstillinitsearlydays,andadmittedtherearestillmany
