informationaboutemergingtechnologies,fuelling

viralmarketing,whileinvestorinterestinearly-stageinnovationshassurgedasfirmsracetouncover

thenextgame-changingbreakthrough.While

manyofthesenewsolutionsholdgreatpromise,

relentlesshypecyclescanhaveunintended

Asnewbreakthroughsemerge,theabilitytodistinguishbetweentransformativesolutionsandmerehypeismorecriticalthanever.

Businessleadersacrossindustriesarefacing

pressuretostaycompetitiveinarapidlychanging

landscape.Overthepasteightdecades,theaveragelifespanofaUSS&P500companyhasdecreasedfrom67yearsto15,reflectingadeclineof80%.2Asaresult,manyexecutivesareprioritizinginnovationtofuelgrowth,withtechnologyspendingrisingsteadilyfrom3.3%ofrevenuein2016to5.5%in2022.3

Thecurrentwaveofinnovation,amplifiedbymediacoverage,isdrivingsubstantiallevelsofinvestment.In2024,globalventurecapitalinvestmentsincreasedto$369billion,up5.4%fromthepreviousyear.4

Asnewtechnologiescontinuetoevolverapidly,

investmentsareshiftingbetweenemergingareas

andapplications,oftenwithoutsufficienttimetofullyassesstheircommercialviabilityandsocietalimpact.

Intotal,sixin10executivesreportchallengesin

quantifyingthebenefitsofindividualtechnology

investments.5Asaresult,industriesincreasingly

viewadoptionandscalingaslong-termendeavours,diversifyingtheirinvestmentsacrossaportfolioof

technologiestomaximizepotentialimpact.6

Movingbeyondthehype

Hypecyclesaroundemergingtechnologiescanleadtounrealisticexpectations,misallocatedresources,andunintendedsocial,economicandethical

consequences.Asnewtechnologiescapturemediaattention,theyoftentriggerpriceincreases,raisingexpectations.7Thesecyclescaninfluencefundingdecisions,withventurecapital,corporateR&D

andgovernmentsoftendrawntowardsunproveninnovationswithuncertaincommercialpotential.

In2024,over1,400start-upsworldwidewere

valuedatmorethan$1billion,underscoring

thescaleofspeculativeinvestment.8Thegap

betweeninitialexcitementandthepractical

applicationormaturityofthesetechnologieshas

createdanimbalance,divertingresourcesfrom

innovationsthatcouldaddressreal-worldneeds,

suchasmodernizingageingenergyinfrastructure,expandingconnectivityforsmall-andmedium-sizedbusinesses,andadvancingpreventativehealthcare.

Navigatingnewopportunitiesandunintendedconsequences

Innovationhasthepotentialtounlocknew

opportunities,drivebenefitsandaddresscomplexchallenges.However,withoutcarefulconsideration,itcanalsoleadtounintendedconsequencesandunforeseenharm.

TheWorldEconomicForum’sGlobalRisksReport2025revealsanincreasinglyfracturedglobal

landscapewheretechnologicalchallengesthreatenstabilityandprogress.9

Opportunitiesandbenefitspresentedbynew

technologicalinnovationincludessustainability

solutions,enablingcleanerenergy,circular

Meanwhile,theunintendedconsequences

andharmsofthesetechnologiesmayinclude

misinformationanddisinformation,spreading

throughmedianetworksandsignificantlyshifting

publicopiniontowardsdistrustinfactsandauthority.In2024,disinformationcampaignsreachednew

levelsofcomplexity,drivenbyartificialintelligence

(AI),largelanguagemodels(LLMs)anddeep-fakevideos,withatleastone-thirdofelectionsinfluencedbyAI-generatedcontent,accordingtoCheckPoint’s

TheStateofCyberSecurity2025

report.These

advancementshavefurtherfuelledpoliticaland

societalpolarization,distortingfactsanderodingtrustinmedia.Additionally,censorshipandsurveillancehavebeenexpandedbygovernmentand“bigtech”corporatemonitoring,whilecyberespionageand

warfarecontinuetothreatendigitalsecurity,disruptoperationsandcompromisecriticalinfrastructure.

Buildingresponsibilityintoinnovation

Todrivemoremeaningfulprogress,stakeholdersneedbetterguidancetohelpadoptersdistinguishbetweenhypeandsubstance,mitigaterisks,

andassesstheeconomicpotentialofemergingtechnologieswithamorestrategicand

groundedapproach.

Theshortlistof20technologieswasthenassessedbyasteeringgroupofworld-leadingexpertsfromadiversityoffieldsandregions,whoappliedthe

followingselectioncriteria:

–Novelty:Earlyadoptionisemerging,butwidespreaduseisnotyetachieved

–Impact:Potentialforsignificantsocietalandeconomicbenefit

–Depth:Developedacrossmultipleentities,withbroadandsustainedinterest

Sinceitsinceptionin2011,theTop10Emerging

Technologiesreporthasidentifiedlesser-knowninnovationsthathavegoneontomakeaglobalimpact.Forexample,

CRISPR-Cas9,featuredin2015,revolutionizedgenetic

engineeringandlaterbecameNobelPrize-winningscience.Itisnowbeingusedtodevelopinsect-anddrought-resistantcropsinsomeoftheworld’sharshestgrowingconditions.In2017,mRNAtechnologywasspotlighted,anditbecamethefoundationfortheCOVID-19vaccines,protectingmillions

globally.Additionally,AI-ledmoleculardesign,whichmadethelistin2018,ledtoDeepMind’sAlphaFoldpredictingthestructureof200millionproteins,andthefirstAI-discovereddrugshavesinceenteredclinicaltrials.

Since2011,theTop10EmergingTechnologiesreporthas

beenacriticalresourceforprofessionalsseekingstrategic

intelligenceoninnovationspoisedtoshapesocietiesand

economiesinthenextthreetofiveyears.12Byspotlighting

breakthroughtechnologiesattheirinflectionpoints,thereportcatalysesforward-lookingdialoguesandsupportsdecision-makersinnavigatingtechnologicaltransformationsthat

strengthensociety’scapacitytoadaptandthrive.

Drawingoninsightsfromleadingscientists,researchersandfuturists,thereporthighlightskeytechnological

advancementswiththepotentialforsignificant,long-

throughacademicresearch.EachtechnologywasevaluatedusingtheWorldEconomicForum’sResilienceConsortium’sframeworkforsustainableinclusivegrowth,focusingontheirpotentialtoaddresssystemicchallengesandcontributetobuildingadaptivecapacityforfuturegenerations.

climate-friendlyinvestmentsoverthepastfiveyearshaveboostedrevenue,whiletwo-thirdssaytheseinvestmentshaveeitherreducedcostsorhadno

significantcostimpact.15Asmomentumgrowstotackleglobalchallenges,businessesmustalsostayattunedtoevolvingconsumerexpectationsand

regulatoryrequirements.

(HVAC)costsby20%andoverallspendby10%.Partnering

Inaworldofgrowingglobaluncertainties,embeddingresilienceintoinnovationcanhelpmitigatetheriskofeconomicfluctuations,geopoliticalinstabilityandotherunforeseenchallenges.Whenintroducing

solutions,itisimportanttoapproachproblems

holistically.Often,newinnovationstargetspecificissueswithoutconsideringthebroadersystem,

implicationsorpotentialnegativeconsequences.16

Toaddressunforeseenchallenges,solutionsmustbeagile,adaptiveandforward-thinking.

Asinnovationsmovefromtheearlystagesto

rapidscaling,thereisariskofbecominglocked

intosub-optimaltechnologies,limitingtheability

toadapttodisruptionsandaddressevolving

challenges.17Buildingresiliencerequiresinnovatorstostrategicallybalancesustaininganddisruptive

innovation,consideringbothemergingthreatsandnewopportunities.

INNOVATORSPOTLIGHT

BasiGo–buildingaresilient,clean-energyfutureforEastAfricantransport

BasiGoiscreatingthefutureofclean,electricpublictransportinEastAfrica.Busesaretheprimarymodeoftransportfor

thevastmajorityofpeoplelivinginEastAfrica,accountingfor40%ofallpassengertrips.Furthermore,countries

likeKenyagenerateover90%oftheirenergyfromclean,

renewablesources.BasiGohasdeployed55electricbusestodate,whichhavedrivenover3.5millionkm,carried

5millionpassengersandmitigatedover1,500tonnesof
