S1.Scope.Thisstandardestablishesperformanceandmarkingrequire-mentsfortiresforuseonmotorvehi-cleswithaGVWRofmorethan4,536kilograms(10,000pounds),specialtytires,andtiresformotorcycles.

S2.Purpose.ThepurposeofthisstandardistoprovidesafeoperationalperformancelevelsfortiresusedonmotorvehicleswithaGVWRofmorethan10,000pounds,trailers,andmotor-cycles,andtoplacesufficientinforma-tiononthetirestopermittheirproperselectionanduse.

S3.Application.Thisstandardappliesto:

NewpneumatictiresforuseonmotorvehicleswithaGVWRofmorethan4,536kilograms(10,000pounds)

manufacturedafter1948;

Newpneumaticlighttrucktireswithatreaddepthof18⁄32inchorgreat-er,foruseonmotorvehicleswithaGVWRof4,536kilograms(10,000pounds)orlessmanufacturedafter1948;

Tiresforuseonspecial-usetrail-ers(ST,FIand8–12rimorlowerdi-ametercode);and

Tiresforuseonmotorcyclesman-ufacturedafter1948.

S4.Definitions.AlltermsdefinedintheActandtherulesandstandardsissuedunderitsauthorityareusedasdefinedtherein.

Lighttrucktiremeansatiredes-ignatedbyitsmanuafactureraspri-marilyintendedforuseonlightweighttrucksormultipurposepassengervehi-cles.

Modelrimassemblymeansatestde-vicethat(a)includesarimwhichcon-formstothepublisheddimensionsofacommerciallyavailablerim,(b)in-cludesanairvalveassemblywhenusedfortestingtubelesstiresoraninnertubeandflap(asrequired)whenusedfortestingtubetypetires,and(c)

undergoesnopermanentrimdeforma-tionandallowsnolossofairthroughtheportionthatitcomprisesofthetire-rimpressurechamberwhenatireisproperlymountedontheassemblyandsubjectedtotherequirementsofthisstandard.

S5.Tireandrimmatchinginformation.S5.1Eachmanufactureroftiresshallensurethatalistingoftherimsthatmaybeusedwitheachtirethatheproducesisprovidedtothepublic.Forpurposesofthissectioneachrimlistingshallincludedimensionalspeci-ficationsandadiagramoftherim.Howeveralistingcompiledinaccord-ancewithparagraph(a)ofthissectionneednotincludedimensionalspecifica-tionsoradiagramofarimiftherim’sdimensionalspecificationsanddiagramarecontainedineachlistingpublishedinaccordancewithparagraph(b)ofthisstandard.Thelistingshallbein

oneofthefollowingforms:

Listedbymanufacturernameorbrandnameinadocumentfurnishedtodealersofthemanufacturer’stires,toanypersonuponrequest,andindupli-cateto:DocketSection,NationalHighwayTrafficSafetyAdministra-tion,400SeventhStreetSW.,Wash-ington,DC20590;or

Containedinpublications,currentatthedateofmanufactureofthetireoranylaterdate,ofatleastoneofthefollowingorganizations:

S5.2Informationcontainedinapub-licationspecifiedinS5.1(b)whichlistsgeneralcategoriesoftiresandrimsbysizedesignation,typeofconstruction,and/orintendeduse,shallbeconsideredtobemanufacturer’sinformationpur-suanttoS5.1forthelistedtires,unlessthepublicationitselforspecificinfor-mationprovidedaccordingtoS5.1(a)indicatesotherwise.

S6.Requirements.Eachtireshallbecapableofmeetinganyoftheapplica-blerequirementssetforthbelow,when

mountedonamodelrimassemblycor-respondingtoanyrimdesignatedbythetiremanufacturerforusewiththetireinaccordancewithS5.However,aparticulartireneednotmeetfurtherrequirementsafterhavingbeensub-jectedtoandmettheendurancetest(S6.1),strengthtest(S6.2),orhighspeedperformancetest(S6.3).

S6.1Endurance.

S6.1.1PriortotestinginaccordancewiththeproceduresofS7.2,atireshallexhibitnovisualevidenceoftread,sidewall,ply,cord,innerliner,orbeadseparation,chunking,brokencords,cracking,oropensplices.

S6.1.2WhentestedinaccordancewiththeproceduresofS7.2:

Thereshallbenovisualevidenceoftread,sidewall,ply,cord,innerliner,orbeadseparation,chunking,brokencords,cracking,oropensplices.

ThetirepressureattheendofthetestshallbenotlessthantheinitialpressurespecifiedinS7.2(a).

S6.2Strength.Whentestedinac-cordancewiththeproceduresofS7.3atire’saveragebreakingenergyvalueshallbenotlessthanthevaluespeci-fiedinTableIIforthattire’ssizeandloadrange.

S6.3Highspeedperformance.Whentestedinaccordancewiththeproce-duresofS7.4,atireshallmeetthere-quirementssetforthinS6.1.1andS6.1.2(a)and(b).However,thisrequire-mentappliesonlytomotorcycletiresandtonon-speed-restrictedtiresofnominalrimdiametercode14.5orlessmarkedloadrangeA,B,C,orD.

S6.4Treadwearindicators.Exceptasspecifiedinthisparagraph,eachtireshallhaveatleastsixtreadwearindi-catorsspacedapproximatelyequallyaroundthecircumferenceofthetirethatenableapersoninspectingthetiretodeterminevisuallywhetherthetirehasworntoatreaddepthof1.6mm(one-sixteenthofaninch).Tireswitharimdiametercodeof12orsmallershallhaveatleastthreesuchtreadwearindicators.Motorcycletiresshallhaveatleastthreesuchindica-torswhichpermitvisualdeterminationthatthetirehasworntoatreaddepthof0.8mm(one-thirty-secondofaninch).

S6.5Tiremarkings.Exceptasspeci-

fiedinthisparagraph,eachtireshall

bemarkedoneachsidewallwiththeinformationspecifiedinparagraphs(a)through(j)ofthissection.Themark-ingsshallbeplacedbetweenthemax-imumsectionwidth(exclusiveofside-walldecorationsorcurbribs)andthebeadonatleastonesidewall,unlessthemaximumsectionwidthofthetireislocatedinanareawhichisnotmorethanone-fourthofthedistancefromthebeadtotheshoulderofthetire.Ifthemaximumsectionwidthfallswith-inthatarea,themarkingsshallappearbetweenthebeadandapointone-halfthedistancefromthebeadtotheshoulderofthetire,onatleastonesidewall.Themarkingsshallbeinlet-tersandnumeralsnotlessthan2mm(0.078inch)highandraisedaboveorsunkbelowthetiresurfacenotlessthat0.4mm(0.015inch),exceptthatthemarkingdepthshallbenotlessthan0.25mm(0.010inch)inthecaseofmotorcycletires.Thetireidentifica-tionandtheDOTsymbollabelingshallcomplywithpart574ofthischapter.Markingsmayappearononlyoneside-wallandtheentiresidewallareamaybeusedinthecaseofmotorcycletiresandrecreational,boat,baggage,andspecialtrailertires.

ThesymbolDOT,whichshallcon-

stituteacertificationthatthetireconformstoapplicableFederalmotorvehiclesafetystandards.Thissymbolmaybemarkedononlyonesidewall.

Thetireidentificationnumberre-quiredbypart574ofthischapter.Thisnumbermaybemarkedononlyonesidewall.

Thetiresizedesignationaslistedinthedocumentsandpublicationsdes-ignatedinS5.1.

Themaximumloadratingandcorrespondinginflationpressureofthetire,shownasfollows:

(Markontiresratedforsingleanddualload):Maxloadsinglellkg(lllb)atllkPa(llpsi)cold.Maxloaddualllkg(lllb)atllkPa(llpsi)cold.

(Markontiresratedonlyforsingleload):Maxloadllkg(lllb)atllkPa(llpsi)cold.

Thespeedrestrictionofthetire,if90km/h(55mph)orless,shownasfollows:

Theactualnumberofpliesandthecompositionoftheplycordmaterialin

thesidewalland,ifdifferent,inthetreadarea;

Thewords‘‘tubeless’’or‘‘tubetype’’asapplicable.

Theword‘‘regroovable’’ifthetireisdesignedforregrooving.

Theword‘‘radial’’ifaradialtire.

Theletterdesignatingthetireloadrange.

S6.6Maximumloadrating.IfthemaximumloadratingforaparticulartiresizeisshowninoneormoreofthepublicationsdescribedinS5.1(b),eachtireofthatsizedesignationshallhaveamaximumloadratingthatisnotlessthanthepublishedmaximumloadrat-ing,oriftherearedifferingpublishedratingsforthesametiresizedesigna-tion,notlessthanthelowestpublishedmaximumloadratingforthesizedes-ignation.

S7.Testprocedures.

S7.1Generalconditions.

S7.1.1Thetestsareperformedusinganappropriatenewtube,tubevalveandflapassembly(asrequired)thatal-lowsnolossofairfortestingoftube-typetiresunderS7.2,S7.3,andS7.4,andtubelesstiresunderS7.3.

S7.1.2ThetiremustbecapableofmeetingtherequirementsofS7.2andS7.4whenconditionedtoatemperatureof35C(95F)for3hoursbeforethetestisconducted,andwithanambienttemperaturemaintainedat35C(95F)duringallphasesoftesting.Thetiremustbecapableofmeetingthere-quirementsofS7.3whenconditionedatatemperatureof21C(70F)for3hoursbeforethetestisconducted.

S7.2Endurance.(a)Mountthetireonamodelrimassemblyandinflateittotheinflationpressurecorrespondingtothemaximumloadratingmarkedonthetire.Useasinglemaximumloadvaluewhenthetireismarkedwithbothsingleanddualmaximumload.

Afterconditioningthetire-rimassemblyinaccordancewithS7.1.2,ad-justthetirepressuretothatspecifiedin(a)immediatelybeforemountingthetirerimassembly.

Mountthetire-rimassemblyonanaxleandpressitagainstaflat-facedsteeltestwheelthatis1708mm(67.23inches)indiameterandatleastaswideasthetreadofthetire.

ApplythetestloadandrotatethetestwheelasindicatedinTableIIIfor

thetypeoftiretestedconductingeachsuccessivephaseofthetestwithoutinterruption.

Immediatelyafterrunningthetiretherequiredtime,measurethetireinflationpressure.Removethetirefromthemodelrimassembly,andin-spectthetire.

S7.3Strength.(a)Mountthetireonamodelrimassemblyandinflateittothepressurecorrespondingtothemax-imumload,ormaximumdualloadwherethereisbothasingleanddualloadmarkedonthetire.Ifthetireistubeless,atubemaybeinsertedtopre-ventlossofairduringthetestintheeventofpuncture.

Afterconditioningthetire-rimassemblyinaccordancewithS7.1.2,ad-justthetirepressuretothatspecifiedin(a).

Forceacylindricalsteelplunger,withahemisphericalendandofthedi-ameterspecifiedinTableIforthetiresize,perpendicularlyintoaraisedtreadelementasnearaspossibletothecenterlineofthetread,atarateof50mm(2inches)perminute,untilthetirebreaksortheplungerisstoppedbytherim.

Recordtheforceandthedistanceofpenetrationjustbeforethetirebreaks,orifitfailstobreak,justbe-foretheplungerisstoppedbytherim.

Repeattheplungerapplicationat72intervalsaroundthecircumferenceofthetire,untilfivemeasurementsaremade.However,inthecaseoftiresof

12inchrimdiametercodeorsmaller,repeattheplungerapplicationat120intervalsaroundthecircumferenceofthetire,untilthreemeasurementsaremade.

Computethebreakingenergyforeachtestpointbyoneofthetwofol-lowingformulas:

W=[(FP)/2]10¥3

Where:

W=Breakingenergyinjoules(J),F=Forceinnewtons(N),and

P=Penetrationinmillimeters(mm),

or;

W=(FP)/2

Where:

W=Breakingenergyininch-pounds(in-lb),F=Forceinpounds(lb),and

P=Penetrationininches(in).

Determinetheaveragebreakingenergyvalueforthetirebycomputingtheaverageofthevaluesobtainedinaccordancewithparagraph(f).

S7.4Highspeedperformance.(a)Per-formsteps(a)through(c)ofS7.2.

Applyaforceof88percentofthemaximumloadratingmarkedonthetire(usesinglemaximumloadvaluewhenthetireismarkedwithbothsin-gleanddualmaximumloads),andro-tatethetestwheelat250rpmfor2hours.

Removetheload,allowthetiretocoolto35C(95F),andthenadjust

thepressuretothatmarkedonthetireforsingletireuse.

Reapplythesameload,andwith-outinterruptionorreadjustmentofin-flationpressure,rotatethetestwheelat375rpmfor30minutes,thenat400rpmfor30minutes,andthenat425rpmfor30minutes.

Immediatelyafterrunningthetiretherequiredtime,measurethetireinflationpressure.Removethetirefromthemodelrimassembly,andin-spectthetire.
