Tosolvethisproblem,theresearchteamturnedtoanewwaythatmixed14yearsof
satelliteLIDARinformationfromtheCALIPSOprojectwithmachinelearning.Unlike
others,LIDARisanactivetechnology.Itworkssimilarlytoradar(雷达)butuseslaserlight
insteadofradiowaves,carryingitsownlightsource.Thisallowedscientiststocollect
informationevenintotaldarkness,producingthefirstcontinuouspictureofwintertimeCO₂
exchangeacrosstheSouthernOcean.
Theresultsshowthatpreviousestimatesmissedabout40%oftheocean'swintercarbon
