Nyadthenturnedfromspeedswimmingtodistanceswimming.Herfirstracewas10milesinthecoldwatersofLakeOntario.Eventhoughshecameintenthplace,shewasthefirstwomanevertopletethecourse.In1974,Nyadsetarecordwhileswimminga22mileraceintheBayofNaples,Italy.ThatsameyearshetriedtoswimbackandforthacrossLakeOntario,atotalof64miles.Nyadmadeitacrossthelake,butonthereturntrip,shelostconsciousnessandhadtobepulledfromthewater.In1975,sheswamaroundManhattanIsland,adistanceof28miles,inarecordof7hoursand57minutes.Threeyearslatersheswam102milesfromtheBahamastoFlorida.
In2010,attheageof61,NyadannouncedshewouldswimfromCubatoFlorida.Inordertotrain,Nyadspentasmanyas14hoursadayswimmingintheocean.TheswimfromCubatoFloridawouldlastatleast60hoursandcover103miles.Unfortunately,badweatherforcedNyadtowaituntilthenextyear.In2011,Nyadattemptedtheswimbutwasblownoffcourseafterbeinginthewaterfor29hours.Nyadattemptedtheswimagainafewmonthslater,butshehadtostopbecauseoftoomanyjellyfishstings(海蜇蜇伤).
