Globalfiberproductionincreasedfromaround125million
tonnesin2023toarecord132milliontonnesin2024.Thisispredominantlyduetogrowthintheproductionofnewvirginfossil-basedsynthetics.
Since2000,whenglobalfiberproductionwas58million
tonnes,productionhasmorethandoubledanditisexpectedtogrowto169milliontonnesin2030ifbusinessasusual
continues.WhiletheindustryhasmadecommitmentstoalignwiththeParisAgreementbykeepingglobalwarmingtoa
1.5°Cpathway,trends,suchastheindustry’srelianceonvirginfossil-basedsyntheticmaterialsandthelimitationsoftextile-to-textilerecycling,threatentounderminetheindustry’s
commitmentstoitsclimategoals.
Themarketshareofrecycledfibersremainedataround7.6%in2024.Thevastmajorityofthiswasrecycledpolyestermadefromplasticbottles,whichaccountedfor6.9%ofallfiber
producedworldwide.Overall,lessthan1%oftheglobalfibermarketwasfrompre-andpost-consumerrecycledtextiles.
Cotton
Cottonremainsthesecondmostwidelyproducedfiberafterpolyester.Globalcottonfiberproductiondecreasedfrom24.8milliontonnesin2022/23to24.5milliontonnesin2023/24,withcotton’sshareoftheglobalfibermarketdecreasingfrom20%to19%duringthisperiod.
Themarketshareofvirgincottoncoveredbytheprograms
thatshareddataforthisreportincreasedtoanestimated34%in2023/24,upfrom31%in2022/23.
BetterCotton,includingitsequivalentsAgro-2,integratedProductionSystemofAndalucía,Spain(iPS),israel
CottonProductionStandardSystem(iCPSS),myBMP,andResponsibleBrazilianCotton(ABR),madeupthemajorityofthis34%,accountingfor23%ofallvirgincottonproducedin2023/24.BetterCottonwithoutitsequivalentsaccountedforaround9%ofallcottongrownin2023/24,ABRfor12%,myBMPfor2%,Agro-2for0.5%,iCPSSfor0.1%,andiPSfor0.03%.
Allothercottonprogramsthatshareddataforthis
report(includingClimateBeneficial™Verified,Fairtrade,internationalSustainabilityandCarbonCertification,
organic,OrganicCottonAccelerator,REELCottonCode,REELRegenerativeCode,regenagri,RegenerativeCottonStandard®,RegenerativeOrganicCertified®,andtheu.S.
CottonTrustProtocol)hadacombinedmarketshareofaround11%ofglobalcottonproductionin2023/24.

challengesandcomparativelylowerpricesfornewvirgin
fossil-basedpolyamide,recycledpolyamidecontinuesto
makeuponly2%ofthetotalpolyamidemarketshare.Most
recycledpolyamideismadefrompre-consumerwasteor
materialssuchasdiscardedfishingnetsandcarpets,butthereisalsoalotofpotentialforpost-consumertextilestobeusedasfeedstock.
Themarketshareofbiobasedpolyamidefibersin2024
remainedlow,ataround0.4%oftheglobalpolyamidefiber
