tonnesin2023toarecord132milliontonnesin2024.Thisispredominantlyduetogrowthintheproductionofnewvirginfossil-basedsynthetics.

Since2000,whenglobalfiberproductionwas58million

tonnes,productionhasmorethandoubledanditisexpectedtogrowto169milliontonnesin2030ifbusinessasusual

continues.WhiletheindustryhasmadecommitmentstoalignwiththeParisAgreementbykeepingglobalwarmingtoa

1.5°Cpathway,trends,suchastheindustry’srelianceonvirginfossil-basedsyntheticmaterialsandthelimitationsoftextile-to-textilerecycling,threatentounderminetheindustry’s

commitmentstoitsclimategoals.

Themarketshareofrecycledfibersremainedataround7.6%in2024.Thevastmajorityofthiswasrecycledpolyestermadefromplasticbottles,whichaccountedfor6.9%ofallfiber

producedworldwide.Overall,lessthan1%oftheglobalfibermarketwasfrompre-andpost-consumerrecycledtextiles.

Cotton

Cottonremainsthesecondmostwidelyproducedfiberafterpolyester.Globalcottonfiberproductiondecreasedfrom24.8milliontonnesin2022/23to24.5milliontonnesin2023/24,withcotton’sshareoftheglobalfibermarketdecreasingfrom20%to19%duringthisperiod.

Themarketshareofvirgincottoncoveredbytheprograms

fossil-basedpolyamide,recycledpolyamidecontinuesto

makeuponly2%ofthetotalpolyamidemarketshare.Most

recycledpolyamideismadefrompre-consumerwasteor

materialssuchasdiscardedfishingnetsandcarpets,butthereisalsoalotofpotentialforpost-consumertextilestobeusedasfeedstock.
