Executivesummary

Asartificialintelligence(AI)increasinglyshapesdailylife,ensuringoldergenerationsarenotleftbehindisacriticalinclusionchallenge.Thisreportexploreshowpeopleaged60–85engagewithandexperienceAI,

drawingonaglobalsurveyof2,515respondents

across16countries,plusexpertinterviewsandfocusgroupsinJapanandIndia.

FindingsshowolderadultsaregenerallylessfamiliarandconfidentwithAIyetremaincuriousandwillingtolearn.Only24%reportedbeingquiteorveryfamiliarwithAI,whilejust15%hadnointerestinfurther

engagement.Usagevariesdependingoncontext.

Forexample,intheMiddleEast,Africa,Indiaregion,41%statedtheywerequiteorveryfamiliarwithAI;

whereasonly12%ofNorthAmericansstatethesame.Similarly,agendergapemerged:31%ofwomenhadneverusedAIincomparisonto20%ofmen.

ExperiencesofAIarelargelypositive:around60%ofrespondentswereeithersomewhatorverypositive

aboutthelikelyimpactofAIonthemselves,especiallyinlearning,health,travel,andcreativeapplications.UsersareawarethatAIoutputscanbeinaccurate,

thoughunderstandingofsubtlerriskslikebiasislimited.

Thereportconcludesthatolderadultsareoptimistic

aboutAIbutneedtargetedsupporttoengagesafely

andconfidently.Policymakers,educators,businesses,andcommunityorganizationsmustprovideaccessible,age-appropriateAIliteracyandinclusivedesignto

preventdigitalexclusionandsupportwellbeing,autonomy,andparticipationinlaterlife.

government.

RecentdatafromtheUnitedKingdom—indicativeofglobaltrends—showthatasignificantnumberofoldergenerationslackbasicdigitalskills:more

thanathirdcannotcompletefundamentaltaskssuchassettingupWi-Fiormanagingpasswords;otherssimplydonotusetheinternetatall(AgeUK2024).Thishighlightsastark“digitaldivide”thatcoulddeepenintheageofAI.

Thisreportexploresoldergenerations’awarenessandunderstandingofAI,includingbarriersto

engagement.ItalsoconsidershowimprovingAIliteracyamongoldergenerationscouldunlock

significantbenefits,andhowfailuretodosomaydeepeninequalitiesatatimewhensocietyand

servicesincreasinglyassumedigitalcompetence.

Methodology

Thefoundationalelementofthereportistheoutputfromanonlinesurveythatexplores

oldergenerations'attitudesanduseofAI.

From29October2025to13November

2025,thesurveycollected2,515responsesdrawnevenlyfrom16countriesacrossfiveregions:MiddleEast,AfricaandIndia(MEAI);Asia-Pacific;Europe;LatinAmerica;and

NorthAmerica.Theageofrespondents

rangedfrom60to85yearsold.ThesurveywascomplementedbyinterviewswithselectexpertsandtwofocusgroupsinJapanandIndiawithpeopleagedbetween60and85.

ThissurveybuiltuponseveralexistingAI

literacyframeworkspreviouslytestedbyEYamongGenZ(EY2024),whichhaveafocusongenerativeAI,thelargestcategoryofAIcurrentlyusedintheworkplace(EY2023).

GenerativeAIreferstoAItoolsthatuse

algorithmsandmachinelearningtechniquestoanalyzepatternsindatatogeneratenewoutputs.AIwasusedintranslatingopen-

endedresponsesfromnon-EnglishlanguagesintoEnglishandthematicallygroupingopen-textresponses;itwasnotusedinany

quantitativeanalysis.

highlightingtheimportantissueof

digitalinclusion,asclearlyonlythosewithinternetaccessandbasic

TheEYAISentimentIndex(EY2026)showsoldergenerationshavealowerlevelofcomfortwithAIcomparedtoyoungergenerations:babyboomersandthesilentgenerationhaveascoreof55and45outof100respectively,whereasGenZandMillennialsscorehigherat69and73respectively,andGenXscores64.

IwantAItohelpmeliveahealthy,wealthyandwiselife.Iwantrazorsharpintelligence.

statethesame.

countriesfore-governmentdevelopment(UnitedNationsDepartmentofEconomicandSocial

Affairs2024),whichmayhaveimpactedtheoveralldigitalliteracyofoldergenerations.

Olderpeople’sunderstandingaboutAIvariesby

context.TheyshowhighawarenessofwhereAIisclearlyinvolved–93%correctlyidentifieditin

customerchatbots–butlowerawarenesswhereitisnot,with43%incorrectlybelievingitisusedinformulasinspreadsheets(Figure1).

OneexplanationisthatpeopletendtoanchortheirunderstandingofAItohighlypublicizedtools,

whichmakesiteasiertorecognizeAIinvolvingvisibleautomationorinteraction,suchas

chatbots.Bycontrast,familiarandlessdynamictoolslikeformulasinspreadsheetsareoften

misclassifiedduetoautomationbiaswhereintelligenceisoverattributedtoautomatedsystems.

Iamgettingannoyedbycompanies’customerservicesobviouslyusingAItoreplytoaquestionorcomplaint.SuchrepliesareobviouslyAIgeneratedastheyarelongandcontainnousefulinformation.

2025),ourreporttestedaspectsofAI

literacyamongoldergenerations,including

theirabilitytoevaluateAIusingknowledgeofitslimitationsandrisks.

Encouragingly,80%ofrespondentsansweredthequestion“NoteverythingproducedbyAIhasbeencheckedtomakesureitistrue,”

correctlysuggestingahealthyand

widespreadcautionregardingAIoutputs.

with40%ofrespondentseitherhavingneverusedAIoronlyonceortwice.

Similarly,14%useAIonceortwicepermonth,22%onceortwiceperweek,

illustratingthatprofessionalcontextsarea

significantgatewaytoengagingwithAI(EY2025).

voice.Sometimesitgivesmethewronganswerbutit’sratherconvenient.Iuseitquite

regularlyineverydaylifeasatool.

Agendergapalsoemerged:31%ofwomenhadneverusedAIincomparisonto20%ofmen

(Figure3).ThismirrorssimilarfindingsaboutaglobalgendergapingenerativeAIusage(Otisetal.2025).Socialandeconomicfactorsmay

explainthisvariation,suchaswomenbeing

underrepresentedinSTEMcareers,implyinglessconfidencewithtechnology,andthatwomen’s

jobsarealreadymoreexposedtoAIdisruptionthanmen(ILO2025).

Itisworthnotingthat27%ofmalerespondentswerestillinfull-timeemploymentcomparedto

18%ofwomen;aswehavealreadyseen,beinginemploymentincreasesAIuse,andthismaybeacontributingfactortothegendergap.

InCalifornia,researchshowsthere’ssomethinglikea40percentagepointgapbetweenmenunder50and

womenover50intheirattitudestowardthinkingAIisbeneficial.Youdon’tseethatgapinalmostanyotherdimension.Andthenyouaddclassandraceintothosenumbersandthegapgetswider.

OldergenerationslearnaboutAIfromavarietyofsources.Most(73%)learnfromonline

sources(includingsocialmedia)andafurther32%byusingAIitself.Children,friendsand

neighbors,andgrandchildrenarealsoasourceofinformation(20%,13%,and6%

respectively).Thissuggeststhatpersonal

motivationandinitiativeplayakeyroleinhowoldergenerationsbuildtheirunderstandingofAI;bycontrast,government-sponsored

programsranknearthebottomatjust3%.

OldergenerationsuseAIforawidevarietyofreasons.Amongthosethathadusedit,thetopusewaslearning(79%ofrespondents),

followedbyhealthandtravel(63%and58%,

respectively).Respondentsreportedpositiveexperienceswithmostuses,topofwhichwerework(84%positive),learning(83%)and

creativity(80%).Negativeexperienceswererare(around1or2%).

isolation,supportlifelonglearningandhealthyaging,andhelp

useitconfidently,safelyandmeaningfully.Thefindingspresentedinthisreportpointtoaclearmandateforcoordinatedactionacrosssociety.

Foreducatorsandpolicymakers:

Designandfundpractical,age-appropriateAIliteracyprogramsthatareembeddedintrustedlocalsettingssuchaslibraries,adulteducationcenters,and

healthcareorcommunityservices.PrioritizeclearguidanceoneverydayAIuse,dataprotection,andrecognizingrisks,andensureprogramsreachthosewhoareretired,digitallyexcluded,orlessconfidentwithtechnology.

Thepathforwardisclear.SocietycanchoosetodeliveranAIjusttransitionforoldergenerations,ensuringtheyhavetheskills,accessandconfidencetothrive.Alternatively,failingtoactrisksentrenchingdigitalexclusionandsquanderingtheopportunitiesthatAIcanbring.

ThemomenttocommittoinclusiveAIadoptionisnow,andtheresponsibilityissharedbyall.
