Thestudyteam,includingresearchersfromtheUnitedStates,ItalyandSwitzerland,analyzed2,000-year-oldconcretesamplesthatweretakenfromacitywallatthearchaeologicalsiteofPrivernum,incentralItaly,andaresimilarincompositiontootherconcretefoundthroughouttheRomanEmpire.

Theyfoundthatwhitechunks(块)intheconcrete,referredtoaslimeclasts(石灰碎屑),gavetheconcretetheabilitytohealcracksthatformedovertime.Thewhitechunkspreviouslyhadbeenoverlookedasevidenceofcarelessmixingorpoor-qualityrawmaterial.

Thestudyevaluatedmorethan600first-yearstudentsacrossfivestudiesatthreeuniversities.ThestudentsworewristFitbitdevicestomonitorandrecordtheirsleeppatterns.Theresearchersfoundthatstudentsinthestudysleeponaverage6.5hoursanight.Moresurprisingly,theresearchersfoundthatstudentswhoreceivelessthansixhoursofsleepexperiencedapronounceddeclineinacademicperformance.Inaddition,eachhourofsleeplostcorrespondedtoa0.07decreaseinend-of-termGPA.
