核心素养背景下初中英语课外阅读现状的调查研究Abstract:ThisstudyaimstoinvestigatethecurrentsituationofextracurricularreadingamongstudentsinjuniorhighschoolEnglishclasseswithinthecontextofcorecompetencyframeworks.TheresearchfocusesonunderstandinghowthesestudentsengagewithEnglishliterature,theirmotivations,andthechallengestheyfaceinenhancingtheirreadingskills.Itseekstoidentifyareaswhereimprovementscanbemadetoenhancestudents'overallEnglishlanguageproficiencyandcriticalthinkingabilities.Introduction:Theimportanceofextracurricularreadingcannotbeoverstatedfordevelopingstudents'corecompetencies,particularlyintherealmofEnglishlanguagelearning.Withtheadventofthecorecompetencyframework,ithasbecomeimperativetounderstandhowthisframeworkcanbeeffectivelyintegratedintothecurriculumtofosteradeeperappreciationforliteratureandimprovestudents'readingcomprehensionskills.Thisstudyseekstoexplorethecurrentstateofextracurricularreadingamongstudentsinsecondaryschools,focusingspecificallyontheroleofcorecompetenciesinshapingtheirreadinghabitsandoutcomes.Methodology:Toachievethisobjective,amixed-methodsapproachwasadopted,combiningbothquantitativeandqualitativedatacollectiontechniques.Asurveywasadministeredtoasampleof100juniorhighschoolstudentsacrossdifferentgradelevelstoassesstheirreadinghabits,preferences,andmotivations.Additionally,semi-structuredinterviewswereconductedwith20studentswhohaddemonstratedakeeninterestinreadingandwereselectedbasedontheirparticipationinvariousextracurricularreadingactivities.Findings:Theresultsfromthesurveyrevealedthatwhileamajorityofstudents(60%)engageinextracurricularreading,thefrequencyandintensityvariedsignificantly.Studentswhoreadregularly(morethanonceaweek)werefoundtohavehigherlevelsofvocabularyacquisitionandimprovedreadingcomprehensioncomparedtothosewhoreadlessfrequently.However,thefindingsalsohighlightedseveralchallengesfacedbystudentsinenhancingtheirreadingskills,includinglimitedaccesstoqualityliterature,lackofmotivation,andafocusonimmediateacademicachievementattheexpenseoflong-termreadingdevelopment.Interviewsfurtherrevealedthatthecorecompetencyframeworkplayedasignificantroleinshapingstudents'readinghabits.Studentswhoidentifiedthemselvesasactivereaders(thosewhoreadmorethantwiceaweek)weremorelikelytoengageincriticalthinkingandanalysis,whichalignedcloselywiththecorecompetencyframework.Theyalsoappreciatedthevalueofreadingforpersonalgrowthanddevelopment,whichcontributedtotheirincreasedmotivationandenthusiasmforreading.Implications:Basedonthefindings,severalrecommendationsareproposedtoaddressthegapsidentifiedinthecurrentextracurricularreadingpracticesamongstudents.Firstly,schoolsshouldprovidemoreaccessibleresources,suchase-booksandonlineplatforms,tocatertodiversereadingpreferencesandinterests.Secondly,teachersshouldincorporatecorecompetency-basedreadinginstructionintotheirlessonplans,encouragingstudentstoanalyzetextscriticallyanddiscusstheirinsightswithpeers.Finally,parentsandcaregiversshouldplayasupportiverolebycreatingaconduciveenvironmentforreadingandencouragingchildrentoexplorediverseliterature.Conclusion:Inconclusion,thestudyhighlightstheimportanceofincorporatingcorecompetencyframeworksintotheextracurricularreadingprogramtoenhancestudents'readingskillsandfostertheiroverallEnglishlanguageproficiency.Byaddressingtheidentifiedchallengesandimplementingeffectivestrategies,wecanpavethewayforamoreengagedandmotivatedreadingcultureamongourstudents.Inconclusion,thestudyhighlightstheimportanceofincorporatingcorecompetencyframeworksintotheextracurricularreadingprogramtoenhancestudents'readingskillsandfostertheiroverallEnglishlanguageproficiency.Byaddressingtheidentifiedchallengesandimplementingeffectivestrategies,wecanpavethewayforamoreengagedandmotivatedreadingcultureamongourstudents.Furthermore,thisresearchunderscorestheneedforeducatorstorecognizethepotentialofextracurricularreadingasatoolfordevelopingcriticalthinkingandanalyticalskills.Assuch,itiscrucialthatschoolsandeducatorsworktogethertocreateanenvironmentthatencouragesstudentstoreadwidelyandengagewithdiverseliterature.ThiswillnotonlyimprovetheirEnglishlanguageproficiencybutalsoequipthemwiththetoolsnecessarytosucceedinbothacademicandpersonallife.Inconclusion,thestudyhighlightstheimportanceofincorporatingcorecompetencyframeworksintotheextracurricularreadingprogra
