*OldFisherman:Ahumble,kind-heartedman,contentwithhissimplelife.

*OldFisherman'sWife:Initiallysharingherhusband'ssimplicity,butpronetodiscontentandincreasinggreed.

*GoldenFish:Amagicalcreaturewiththepowertograntwishes,wiseandsomewhatforbearing.

*Narrator(Optional):Canbeusedtosetscenes,providetransitions,oremphasizekeymoralpoints.

Setting

Theactiontakesplaceinasmallcoastalvillage,primarilyneartheseawheretheFishermancastshisnets,andoutsidetheFisherman'shumbledwelling.ThepassageoftimeandthechangingcircumstancesoftheFisherman'sWifearereflectedintheevolution(andeventualdevolution)oftheirhome.

ActOne:TheCatchandtheFirstWish

Scene1:TheHumbleHut

Wife:(Sighingheavily)Oh,thismiserablelife!Mendingtheserags,eatingthesamemeagersoupdayinanddayout.Can’tyoucatchanythingbetterthanthosemeaslyfish,oldman?

Fisherman:(Patiently)Now,wife,wehaveenough.Theseaprovides,andwearehealthy.Whatmoredoweneed?

Wife:(Snorting)"Enough"!That’seasyforyoutosay,dozinginyourboatallday.I’mstuckhere,slavingawayinthishovel.(Shegesturesaround)Lookatthisplace!It’sapigsty.

Fisherman:(Gently)Theseaisunpredictable,wife.Todaymaybebetter.I’llheadoutnow.Perhapsthetidewillbringusfortune.

(TheFishermangathershisnetandrod,giveshiswifeawearylook,andexits.TheWifecontinuestogrumbletoherselfasthescenefades.)

Scene2:TheGoldenCatch

(Sceneopenstoarockyshore.Theseaiscalm.TheFishermanisinasmallboat,castinghisnet.)

Fisherman:(Singingsoftlytohimselfatraditionalseashanty)

(Hepullsinhisnet,whichisheavy.)

Fisherman:(Surprised)Well,whathavewehere?That’safineweight!

(Hestrugglestohaulthenetintotheboat.Asheemptiesit,amongtheusualfish,asmallgoldenfishisrevealed,shimmering.)

Fisherman:(Astonished)Blessmyeyes!Agoldenfish!I’veneverseenthelike.

GoldenFish:(Speakingwithaclear,melodiousvoice)Donotfearme,kindfisherman.Iamnoordinaryfish.Iamanenchantedprince.Ifyoureleasemebackintothesea,Iwillgrantyouanywishyoudesire.

Fisherman:(Smiling)Iliveasimplelife.Myneedsarefew.Keepyourmagic,littleone.Mayyourwaterstreatyouwell.

(TheFishermangentlyplacestheGoldenFishbackintothesea.Itswimsaway,thenpauses,lookingback.)

GoldenFish:Shouldyoueverchangeyourmind,returntothisspotandcallforme.Iwillhearyou.Farewell,kindfisherman.

(TheGoldenFishswimsoutofsight.TheFishermanwatches,then,shakinghisheadinwonder,gathershisnetsandrowsbacktoshore.)

(Backatthehut.TheWifeispacing,lookingoutfortheFisherman.Heenters,empty-handedexceptforhisnet.)

Fisherman:(Chuckling)Icaughtsomething,wife,butIletitgo.

Wife:(Eyesnarrowing)Letitgo?Areyoudaft?Wehavenothingtoeat,andyouletacatchgo?Whatwasit?Someworthlessminnow?

Fisherman:No,no.Itwasagoldenfish,wife.Amagicalgoldenfishthatspokeandofferedtograntmeawish.

Wife:(Staring,thenexploding)AWHAT?Agoldenfish?Andyouletitgo?Withoutaskingforanything?Youfool!Youabsolutefool!

Fisherman:Butwife,itseemedwrongtotakeadvantageofsuchacreature.Itwassobeautiful,anditofferedfreely…

Fisherman:(Callingout,awkwardly)Oh,goldenfish!Goldenfish!Areyouthere?

(TheGoldenFishappears,swimmingnearthesurface.)

GoldenFish:Ihearyou,fisherman.Whatisyourwish?

Fisherman:(Embarrassed)Oh,wisefish…itisnotIwhowishes,butmywife.SheisveryupsetthatIdidnotaskforareward.Shesaysourwash-tubisbroken,andshewouldlikeanewone.

(Monthslater.TheWife,nowdressedasaqueen,sitsonathroneinagrandhall,surroundedbycourtiers.)

Wife:(Bored,tappingherfingers)Beinganoblewomanistedious.Everyonegrovels,butIwantmorepower.IwanttobeQueen!Rulerofalltheland!Withacrownandascepter,andeveryonebowingbeforeme!

(ShenoticestheFisherman,whoisnowlittlemorethanaservantinhisownhome.)

Wife:You!Fisherman!Gettothesea!TellthatgoldenfishIwanttobeQueenofalltheland!
