TeachingObjectives:

1.LanguageKnowledge:

(1)Introduceandconsolidatevocabularyrelatedtorules,order,andcommunitybehavior.

(2)Practicetheuseofsentencestructuresfordiscussingrulesandmakingsuggestions(e.g.,“Weshould...,”“It’simportantto...”).

(3)Strengthentheabilitytoexpressopinions,giveadvice,anddiscussthenecessityofrules.

2.LanguageSkills:

(1)Listening:Studentswillpracticelisteningforspecificinformationandunderstandingdetailsinaproject-relatedtask.

(2)Speaking:Developstudents’abilitytoexpresspersonalopinionsonrulesandorder,particularlythroughagrouporclassproject.

(2)Reading:Encouragestudentstoreadandcomprehendtextsrelatedtorulesandtheirrolesinsociety.

(3)Writing:Developskillstowriteabouttheimportanceofrulesandmakesuggestionsforimprovement.

3.CulturalAwareness:

(1)Fosteranunderstandingofhowrulescreateorderindifferentenvironments,suchasschool,family,andsociety.

(2)Encouragestudentstoappreciatethevalueofrulesinmaintainingfairnessandharmonyincommunities.

4.CriticalThinking:

Encouragestudentstocriticallyreflectontheimportanceofrulesandworkcollaborativelyonaprojecttocreateorimproverulesforaspecificenvironment(e.g.,school,classroom,orcommunity).

TeachingFocus:

1.Vocabularyrelatedtorulesandorder(e.g.,behavior,follow,community,etc.).

2.Sentencestructuresformakingsuggestionsandprovidingreasonsforrules(e.g.,“Weshould…because…”).

1.Encouragingstudentstoexpresstheirthoughtsclearlyandconfidentlyduringthegroupwork.

2.Helpingstudentslinktheirpersonalexperiencestothecreationofpracticalrulesandsolutions.

3.Ensuringthelanguageusedintheprojectreflectsappropriatevocabularyandsentencestructuresforgivingadviceandmakingsuggestions.

TeachingProcedures:

Step1:Lead-in(5minutes)

(1)Greetstudentsandquicklyreviewthekeyconceptslearnedinthepreviouslesson(rules,behavior,suggestions).

(2)Write"NoRules,NoOrder"ontheboardandasktheclasswhatthismeansintheirownwords.

(3)Explainthattoday'slessonwillinvolveaprojectwherestudentsworkingroupstocreateasetofrulesforaspecificcommunityorenvironment.

Step2:BrainstormingRules(10minutes)

1.VocabularyReview:

(1)Quicklyreviewkeyvocabularythatstudentsmayuseintheirproject:

-Rules(n.)

-Order(n.)

-Follow(v.)

-Respect(v.)

-Behavior(n.)

-Fairness(n.)

-Cooperate(v.)

(2)Encouragestudentstogiveexamplesofeachwordinasentence.

2.GroupBrainstorming:

(1)Dividetheclassintosmallgroups(3-4studentspergroup).

(2)Askeachgrouptochooseoneenvironmentfortheirproject(classroom,playground,etc.).

(3)Withintheirgroups,havestudentsbrainstormthemostimportantrulestheythinkshouldbeappliedtothatenvironment.

(4)Encouragethemtoconsiderthepurposeofeachruleandhowitcanhelppeoplebehavewellandmaintainorder.Studentsshouldalsothinkaboutconsequencesforbreakingtheserules.

Step3:GroupPresentationandDiscussion(15minutes)

1.GroupPresentations:

(1)After5-7minutesofbrainstorming,askeachgrouptopresenttheirlistofrulestotheclass.

Theyshouldinclude:

-Therule(s).

-Whytherule(s)arenecessary(provideareason).

-Howtherule(s)willhelpmaintainorderandcreateapositiveenvironment.

2.ClassDiscussion:

(1)Aftereachgrouppresents,encourageabriefdiscussionontheirrules.Askquestionslike:

-“Doyouagreewiththisrule?Whyorwhynot?”

-“Whatmighthappenifwedon’thavethisrule?”

-“Howcanweimprovethisruletomakeitclearerorfairer?”

(2)Discussthedifferentperspectivesandhowrulescanvarydependingontheenvironment.

Step4:WritingTask(8minutes)

1.WritingTaskInstructions:

(1)Askstudentstowriteashortparagraph(5-6sentences)aboutoneruletheythinkismostimportantinanyenvironment(school,home,park,etc.).

Theyshouldinclude:

-Therule.

-Whyit’simportant.

-Howithelpsmaintainorderandfairness.

-Whoshouldfollowtherule.

2.IndependentWriting:

Allowstudents5-6minutestowrite.Walkaroundtheclassroomtoprovidesupportandmonitorstudents'progress.

Step6:Homework(2minutes)

(1)Forhomework,studentsshouldwritealettertotheirteacherorfamilymembersexplainingwhyrulesareimportantatschoolorhomeandsuggestanewruletheythinkwouldimprovetheenvironment.

(2)Theyshoulduseatleastthreevocabularywordsfromtoday’slesson(e.g.,rules,order,behave,fairness).
