Theadvancementofinformationandcommunicationtechnologiesisusheringintheeraof6G,whichpromisestorevolutionizeourdigitalexperiences.Expectedtobuilduponthefoundationslaidby5G,6Gaimstodeliverricher,moreimmersiveexperiences,achieveubiquitouscoverage,andfosternewformsofcollaboration.Asanext-generationtechnology,6Gispoisedtoenableaplethoraofnovelapplicationscenarioswhileenhancingexistingfunctionalities.
TheInternationalTelecommunicationUnionRadiocommunicationSector(lTU-R)hassetforthavisionforthecapabilitiesofIMT-2030,encompassingboththeenhancementofcurrent5Gcapabilitiesandtheintroductionofbrand-newfunctionalitiestargetedspecificallyat6G,Thesecapabilitiesarecategorizedintotwomaingroups:theenhancementofexisting5Gcapabilitiesandnewcapabilitiestargetedat6G.
AICapabilities:NativeAIin6GnetworksmeansconsideringAIduringthedesignphase.AIcapabilitiesempowertheentirenetwork,includingaccessnetworks,corenetworks,andendpoints.Furthermore,6Gnetworkintelligenceisinherentlyendowedwitheachnetworkfunctionandtheentirenetwork,achievingautonomousoperationofnetworkservices,business,andfunctions,trulybecomingahigh-levelautonomousnetwork,andservingasapivotandfoundationforenablingintelligentindustries,withouthumaninterventionforself-monitoring,
self-organizing,self-optimizing,andself-repairing.
CommunicationandSensingConvergenceCapability:The6Gnetworkwillincorporatenewsensingcapabilitiestosupportintegratedcommunicationandsensingscenarios.Thisconvergenceleveragestheextensivereachofmobilecommunicationnetworkstonotonlyenhancecommunicationabilitiesbutalsoempowerthenetworkwithhigh-precisionsensing.Thisdualfunctionalityfacilitatestheintelligentconnectionofallthings,creatingasynergybetweencommunicationandsensingthatwasnotpossiblewithpreviousgenerationsofnetworks.
DataServiceCapability:Withtheproliferationofintelligentapplicationscenariosandthedeepeningintegrationofpassivesystems,6Gnetworkswillbehometomassiveamountsofheterogeneousdata.Toeffectivelymanagethisdatadeluge,itisimperativethatdataservicesbeincorporatedintothenetworkarchitecture.Theshiftfromcentralizedtodistributeddataservicesrepresentsasignificantevolutioninhowdataisprocessed.Bydistributingdataservicesclosertothesource,6Gnetworkscanofferreal-timeprocessing,therebyprovidingfasterresponsetimes.Additionally,thenativeAIcapabilitiesof6Grequirevastamountsofdataformodeltraining,furtherunderscoringtheimportanceofefficientdatamanagement.Assuch,6Gnetworksmustbecapableofdeliveringsecureandefficientdataservicesbothinternallyandexternallytoenhancedataflowefficiencyanduserexperience.
UbiquitousComputingCapability:Thelimitationsofcentralizedcloudcomputingarebecomingincreasinglyapparent,especiallyinscenariosthatdemandlowlatency,highbandwidth,andreal-timeprocessing—suchasimmersivecloudXR,autonomousdriving,andotheradvancedapplications.Tomeetthesediversecomputingneeds,6Gwillleveragedistributedcomputilitydeployments.Thisapproachensuresthatcomputingresourcesareavailablewhereverandwhenevertheyareneeded,providingatrulyubiquitouscomputingcapability.Suchadaptabilityisessentialformeetingthedemandsofpervasiveintelligentapplicationsandcateringtoavarietyofdataservicerequirements.
UbiquitousConnectivity:Ahallmarkof6Gnetworkswillbetheirabilitytoofferwide-areaconnectivitythatspansvariousenvironments,includingsky,earth,air,andsea.Thiscomprehensivereachaimstosatisfytheheterogeneousaccessscenariosandperformancerequirementsofdiverseapplicationareas.Bymaintainingconsistentuserexperiencesacrossdifferentlocations,6Gnetworkswilltacklechallengesrelatedtoconnectivity,coverage,capacity,datarates,andterminalmobility.Ubiquitousconnectivityisfundamentalforenablinguserstoseamlesslytransitionbetweenenvironmentswhileenjoyinghigh-quality,uninterruptedservice.
Requirement
In5G,theseparationofsoftwareandhardwarethroughvirtualizationandcontainerizationtechnologies,coupledwiththeintroductionofaservicedarchitecture,allowsthenetworktohaveacertaindegreeofflexibilityandscalability,buttherearestillsomeproblemsthatneedtobesolvedduetothelimitationsofthe5Garchitecture.
CentralizedNetworkModel:Thecentralizednatureof5Gnetworkspresentslimitationsintermsofdeploymentandcustomizationforfutureapplications.Italsoposesasinglepointoffailurerisk,whereanissueatonecentralnodecouldimpacttheentirenetwork.
RudimentaryUserRequirementManagement:5Gnetworksemploynetworkslicingtodifferentiateservicesbutstillhavearelativelyuniformarchitectureandlogicalfunctiondivisionamongslices.Thisapproachlacksthegranularityneededtoeffectivelycatertodiversescenariosanticipatedin6G.
InsufficientNetworkFunctionSinking:While5Genableslocaldataservicesthroughuser-planefunctionsinkingandprivatenetworkestablishmentforcertainToC(TechnologyofConsumer)andToB(TechnologyofBusiness)applications,itscentralizedmanagementisinadequateforabroaderspectrumof
industrialuses.Additionally,thelackofinterconnectivitybetweenprivatenetworkshindersflexibleresourceallocation.
SeparateDevelopmentofArithmeticNetworkandMobileCommunicationNetwork:Thecurrentdivisionbetweenarithmetic(computational)networksandmobilecommunicationnetworksleadstoasituationwherecomputationalresourcescannotbeefficientlyutilizedduetolackofintegration.Centralizedcloudcomputingisnotsufficientforlow-latency,high-bandwidth,real-timeapplicationssuchasimmersivecloudXRandautonomousdriving.Thisseparationneedstobeaddressedtoimprovecollaborationandreducelatency.
Chimney-TypeDataServices:In5G,dataservicesareorganizedinsilos,whichhindersdataqualityandefficiency.This
chimney-typestructurebecomesabottleneckindatacollectionandsharing.Additionally,thestorage,interfaces,anddatamanagementprotocolsvaryacrossdifferentgenerationsofcommunicationnetworks,creatingcompatibilityissues.
NetworkIntelligencePlug-inandStrongCoupling:Thenetworkintelligencein5Gisoftenimplementedasaplug-in,withAIfunctionsprovidedbyindependententitiesinsideoroutsidethenetwork.ThisresultsinahighdegreeofcouplingbetweenAIcomponents.ThefragmentednatureofnetworkAI
applicationscenariosandresearchrequiresamoreintegratedandstreamlinedapproachtofacilitatebroaderusecasesandsmootheroperation.
Inordertomeetthedemandfor6Gmulti-scenariodifferentiation,6Gnetworkinnovationisrequired.
NetworkFlexibility:Emergingapplicationssuchasholographiccommunication,immersiveXR(ExtendedReality),sensoryinterconnection,Telematics,andautonomousdrivinghavediverseperformancerequirementsintermsofdelay,reliability,throughput,etc.Thisnecessitatesthat6Gnetworksmustbeflexibleandscalabletorapidlyadapttothesevariedneeds.
DeeperServitization:Theconceptofservitization,whichreferstothetransformationofproductsintoservices,needstogodeeperinthenetwork.Thisincludesenhancingtheservitizationofthecorenetworkcontrolplane,extendingittotheuserplane,thentotheRadioAccessNetwork(RAN),andfinallytotheUserEquipment(UE).Thegoalistoachieveend-to-endservitizationoftheentirenetwork.
DistributedArchitecture:ScenarioslikecloudgamingandimmersiveXRrequiretemporary,largebandwidth,and
low-latencyaccessservices.HolographiccommunicationandTelematicsnotonlyneedhighbandwidthandultra-lowlatency
butalsodemanddataservices,AIservices,andcomputationservices.Applicationslikefederatedlearningmustconsiderthelocationofdatasources,computationalresources,andlatency,requiringdynamicconfigurationofnetworkfunctionsandresources.Theseneedspushthenetworktowardsaflexible,end-to-enddistributedarchitecturethatcanprovideubiquitousconnectivityandproximitynetworkservices,alongwith
real-timeornear-real-timequalityofservicemonitoringandmanagementcapabilitiestosatisfydiverseuserdemands.
Multi-factorOn-DemandIntelligentOrchestration:Theadventofnewapplicationssuchasholographiccommunication,immersiveXR,sensoryinterconnection,connectedvehicles,andautonomousdrivingdemandmorethanjustconnectivityservicesfrom6Gnetworks.Thesescenariosrequireperceptionservices,intelligentservices,dataservices,andarithmetic(computational)services.Consequently,6Gnetworksmustbecapableofcross-layerandmulti-layerintelligentorganizationbasedonuserneedstoprovideacomprehensiverangeofservices.
End-Edge-Network-CloudCollaboration:Forcomputationalservices,6Gnetworksareexpectedtoevolvetowardsadistributedmulti-tieredcomputingcollaborationframeworkthat
integrates"cloud,network,edge,end,andindustry".Thisarchitecturewillinvolvethecloudhandlinglarge-volumeandcomplexcomputationsalongwithalgorithmtraining,theedgefocusingonagileaccessandlocalcomputation,andtheendpointbeingresponsibleforpervasivecomputingtaskslikesensingandinteraction.Asbusiness,data,andAImovetowardsdistributeddevelopment,efficientcollaborationbetweencloud,edge,andendpointcomputingresourcesbecomesessential.
DataCollaborationandDataSharing:Recognizingthenaturallydistributednatureofdata,thereisaneedforaunifieddataserviceframeworkthatmanagesandschedulesthelifecycleofdataservicestoenhanceefficiency.Centeredarounduserdemands,thisinvolvesaglobalperspectiveondatasourceselection,networkelementfunctionconfiguration,networktopologydesign,andotherdataserviceunits.Theseelementsmustbeorganizedinanorderlymanner,withreal-timeanalysisconductedbyjointedgedataservicestogenerateservicesthatmeettherequirements.
EndogenousIntelligence:Arithmeticanddataresourcesareubiquitous,andintegratingnetworkandterminalarithmeticnearthedatasourcetorealizeintelligentcapabilitiesandprovideintelligentservicescanimproveprocessingefficiency,reduce
datatransmissioncosts,reducelatency,protectdataprivacy,andrealizegreenandlow-carbon.
Architecture
ArchitectureDesignPrinciples
Thearchitecturedesignfor6Gnetworksmustbeapproachedfromaholisticperspective,aligningwiththekeycapabilityindexesproposedbytheInternationalTelecommunicationUnionRadiocommunicationSector(ITU-R).Thedesignshouldaccommodatenewscenariosandtechnologieswhileallowingfortheseamlessevolutionfrom5Gto6Gnetworks.Thefollowingdesignprinciplesarecrucial:
Simplicity:
The6Gnetworkisenvisionedasaconvergedairandspaceintegratednetwork.Asthescaleofnetworkaccessgrowsanddemandsbecomemorediverse,simplicityinarchitectureandprotocolsisessential.Thissimplicityenablesefficientdatatransmissionandon-demandnetworkfunctiondeployment.Itaimstoprovidealightweightandflexibleclosed-loopnetworkthateffectivelyreducesenergyconsumptionandavoidsunnecessarynetworkredundancy.
Convergence
The6Gnetworkaimstomovebeyondtraditionalunidimensionalcommunicationandtransmissionservices.Itwillintegratecapabilities
suchassensinganddataprocessingtooffermulti-dimensionalinternalandexternalinformationservices.Byfullyleveragingthenetworkresourceplatform,itcansupportcomprehensivelife-cycleservicesforthedevelopmentofafullyinformationalsociety.
Flexibility
6Gaimstoimplementafull-service/programmablenetworkarchitecturethatseparatessoftwarefromhardwareresources.Thisseparationallowsforflexibleresourceallocation,enhancingthenetwork'sadaptability.Itreducesthecostsassociatedwithnetworkupgradesandreplacementsbyenablingamoremodularapproach.Thenetworkshouldprovide"plug-and-play"capabilitiesforvariousemergingapplicationscenariosandverticalindustries,allowingthemtointegrateseamlessly.
Endogenous
The6Gnetworkarchitectureshouldincorporateendogenousintelligence,arithmetic,andsecurity.Thisintegrationaimstoachieveubiquitousnetworking,computation,andintelligence,penetratingeverydomain,network,andunitthroughouttheirentirelifecycle.Bydoingso,the6Gnetworkarchitecturewillinherentlysupportanewparadigmthatextendsbeyondtraditionalconnectivityandisdrivenbyartificialintelligence(AI).
Openness
The6Gnetworkshouldserveasanopenplatformthatfacilitatesbusinessopportunitiesbyconnectingthenetwork'sinternalcapabilitieswithexternaldemands.Itshouldestablishrobustinteroperabilityandopenness,supportingallindividualsandenterprisescapableofinteractingwiththenetwork.Byleveragingnetworkresources,itcanoffervaluableassistancetofurtherthedevelopmentofindustryinformatization.

Basedonthedesignprinciples,a6Gnetworkarchitectureisproposed,includinganetworkresourceandinfrastructurelayer,anetworkfunctionlayer,aserviceandcapabilityopenlayer,managementorchestration,andendogenousenablement.

Thislayerprovidesthenecessaryinfrastructureandmultidimensionalresourcesrequiredforthegenerationofnetworkfunctions.Itencompassesarangeofresourcesincludingubiquitous
wireless,computing,storage,andnetworkingcapabilities.Resourcesincludeunifiedvirtualizedresources,abstractablephysicalresources,anddedicatedhigh-performancehardwareresources.Theseresourcesaretheoperationalfoundationfortheentirenetworkandaremanagedbythenetworkfunctionsoftheupperlayers.Asapass-senseintegratednetwork,itoffersdatainformationcollectioncapabilities,providingsupportforAIapplicationsthroughbigdata.
NetworkFunctionLayer
Buildingonthepervasiveinfrastructurefromthelowerlayer,thislayerinterconnectsdynamicallydistributedresources.Itenablescommunication,sensing,computation,intelligence,anddigitalsecuritynetworkfunctionsthroughtheunifiedandcooperativeschedulingofmultidimensionalresources.Thelayersupportsatomizationfunctionssuchassplitting,combining,orexpandingthatusersrequireindifferentnetworksystems.
Itisrepresentedbymultiplenetworkelementsthatofferfull-servicesolutions,meetingthefragmented,diverse,andcomplexnetworkdemandsofvariousindustryapplications.Thelayertransformsthetraditional"application-adaptednetwork"intoan"application-definednetwork"byprovidingon-demandintelligent,simple,andtrustedfunctionsandservices.Throughendogenousempowerment,thenetworkcontinuouslyintegratesandabsorbsadvancedtechnologies,becomingan
evolutionaryforcethatprogressestomoreadvancedstages.Thenetworkfunctionssupporttheexplosivegrowthofnewindustriesandapplications,offeringasmartandstreamlinedplatform.Thislayercontributestothetransformationandupgradingofeconomicandsocialdigitization,networking,andintelligence.
DataPlane
Itisresponsiblefordatamanagementfunctionssuchascollection,processing,analysisandserviceofalldatainthewholenetwork.Drivenbythedemandof"SmartConnectionofEverything,DigitalTwin",itimprovestheperformanceofdataservices,reducestheoverheadofdatatransmissiononbandwidth,carriesoutunifiedandcollaborativemanagementofdatainthewholenetwork,supports6Gtoprovidesafe,sharedandtrustworthydataservicesforthewholenetwork,andcreatesmorevaluethroughintelligentprocessingandanalysisofdata.Atthesametime,itprovidessecureandefficientdataservicesbothinsideandoutsidethenetworktoenhancedataflowefficiencyanduserexperience.
ControlPlane
Thecontrolplaneisanenhancedfunctionalplane.6Gnetworkarchitecturewillsupporttraditionalconnectivityservices,butalsoaddcontrolservicesrelatedtointelligence,arithmetic,securityandothercapabilities,realizingamajorshiftfrommobilecommunicationstomobileinformationservices.Thecontrolplanewillalsoexpandfroma
singleconnectionservicecontroltomultiplebusinessdimensionsofcommunication,computing,intelligenceanddigitalcontrol,supporttheunifiedandsimpleaccessofstar-earthconvergence,facilitatethein-depthintegrationofendogenouscapabilitiessuchasintelligence/security/calculationpowerwiththenewarchitecture,andrealizeflexible,intelligent,andsecurecontrolofthenetworkbasedontheendogenouscapabilitiesconferredbyendogenousempowerment.
UserPlane
Theuserplaneisanenhancedfunctionalplane.Astheonlyfaceinthenetworkarchitecturethatprovidesuserdatatrafficprocessingandforwardingfunctions,theuserplaneisthecoreofrealizingtheultimateexperienceofuserservices,andthewindowforrealizingthe"user"asthecenter.Theuserplanesupportsthedataforwardingandtransmissionofmulti-dimensionalnewservicesthroughexpansiontomeetthetransmissionrequirementsof6Gcommunication,perception,arithmetic,intelligence,data,andsecureconvergednetwork;underthetrendofend-to-endfull-serviceprovisioning,theuserplaneservicingwillbedrivenbyscenariostoactivatethenetwork'sapplicationmodethrough"orderingaccordingtoasingledish",combinedwiththeservicingofRAN.Inthetrendofend-to-endfull-serviceprovisioning,userplaneserviceprovisioningwillactivatetheapplicationmodeofnetworkthroughscene-driven"àlacarte",which,combinedwithRANservice
provisioning,willbringthepossibilityofoptimizationbysplittingandrestructuringtheuserplanefunctionsoftheaccessnetworkandthecorenetworkatthesametime.high-precisiontimesynchronization;inordertoachievehigh-performanceforwardingandnetworkautonomousinterconnection,theuserplaneneedstoenhanceorintroducenewtransportprotocols.
ServiceandCapabilityOpenLayer
Itextracts,encapsulatesandcombinesthenetworkfunctionsofthelowerlayers,andprovideson-demandcapabilitiesorservicesthatcanbeopenedforinternalnetworkservicesorexternalapplications,coveringconnectivityaswellasavarietyofcapabilitiesorservicessuchasdata,computing,intelligenceandorchestrationmanagement,whichistheexternalembodimentofnetworkasaservice.
Theserviceandcapabilityopenlayerinteroperateswiththeapplicationlayerinthenorthdirectionandconnectswithcapabilitiesandservicesinthesouthdirection,supportsthesafeopeningofnetworkcapabilities,andprovidescallable,friendlyandrichAPIinterfacesforatomiccapabilities.Accordingtothebusinessrequirementsofdifferentscenarios,itprovideson-demandnetworkservicesforubiquitoususersandimprovestheeffectofuserexperience.Atthesametime,itinteractswithotherlayers/facestocollectandencapsulatetheserviceandcapabilityopenlayerofotherlayers/faces.
Endogenousempowermentrealizesfulllifecyclemanagementofendogenouscapabilitiesandon-demandschedulingofmultipleelementsofendogenouscapabilitieswithinthenetwork,createsendogenousmulti-dimensionalcapabilities,andempowersthenetworkwithnetworkfunctionssuchasintelligence,arithmeticpower,security,etc.,whichservesasthefoundationofthe6Gnetwork,andbuildsupanon-demand,flexibleandefficientendogenouscapabilityresourcepool.Basedonendogenousempowerment,the6Gnetworkcanoptimizenetworkperformanceandachievenetworkautonomybyusingendogenouscapabilitiesinternallywithoutexternalintervention;externally,itcangivemoresupporttonewservicesforapplicationsinvariousindustriesandimproveuserexperience.Thecurrentcapabilitiesofendogenousempowermentincludeintelligence,arithmetic,andsecurity,andthecapabilitiesofendogenousempowermentwillcontinuetoexpandwiththeemergenceofnewbusinessscenariosandverticalindustries.

Theintroductionofnewapplicationscenariosandnewkeytechnologiesin6Gbringsnewsecurityproblems.6Gnetworksecuritycapabilityshouldbeintegratedintothenetworkarchitecture,andendogenoussecurityempowermentisorientedbyendogenoussecurity,basedondistributedtrustworthiness,breakingthetraditionalsecurityboundaries,anddeployingdatasecurityandprivacyprotection
technologies,whichcanprovideendogenoussecuritysensing,defenseandpreventionfunctionsforeachfunctionandresourceofthe6Gnetworksystemandmakethesecuritycapabilityon-demandcustomizableandon-demandaccess.Thesecuritycapabilitiescanbecustomizedondemand,guaranteeingnetworkandusersecurityinternallyandrealizingtheopennessofsecuritycapabilitiesexternally.Ultimately,the6Gnetworkarchitectureempowerstheformationofautomaticimmunity,trustandconsensus,synergisticelasticity,intelligentandefficientsecuritysystem,andrealizestheeffectiveoperationoftheentirenetworkwithmultipleapplicationsandhighreliabilityandhighsecurityinparallel.
EndogenousAI
Artificialintelligencewillbecomethefirstendogenousdrivingforceforthedevelopmentofhigh-performancenetworks.6GnetworkintelligencewilldeeplyintegrateanddesignAI'sarithmetic,data,algorithms,andotherelementalrequirementsinnetworkfunctions,architecture,protocols,andprocesses,realizingtheon-demandschedulingandflowofAIdata,algorithms,arithmetic,andotherresourceelementsatthenetworklevel,andmorereal-timeandhigh-efficiencyAItraining/reasoning,aswellastheintelligentidentificationofAIscenariosandthesmartgenerationofusecases,soastoimprovenetworkperformanceandefficiencythroughAI.TheAInetworkcanbeusedto
improvetheperformanceandefficiencyofthenetworkthroughAIandrealizeahighlevelofautonomyofthenetwork.Throughtheintelligentnativecapabilitiesofthenetwork,itcanachievebusinessintelligenceandserviceintelligence,andtrulybecomeanend-to-endhigh-levelautonomousnetwork,aswellasalinkandcornerstoneforempoweringthousandsofindustrieswithuniversalintelligence.
EndogenousComputility
Astheemergenceofnewusers,technologies,applicationsandscenarioshasbroughtaboutexponentialgrowthindatavolume,variousindustrieshaveputforwardamoreurgentneedforarithmeticpowerandnetwork.6Gnetworkwillbedeeplyintegratedwitharithmeticnetwork,andarithmeticpowercapabilitywillbebuiltintothearchitecture,whichontheonehandwillenablethemobilecommunicationnetworktoefficientlyutilizearithmeticresourcesandbuildanenhancednetworkarchitecturewithendogenousarithmeticpower;andontheotherhand,itcanprovidearithmeticpowerservicesforexternalindustrialapplicationsthroughthemobilecommunicationnetworktoempowerthediversifiedapplicationneedsofthousandsofindustries.Ontheotherhand,itcanprovidearithmeticservicesforexternalindustryapplicationsthroughthemobilecommunicationnetwork,empoweringthediversifiedapplicationneedsofthousandsofindustries.Throughtheunifiedendogenousempowermentandpenetrationofarithmeticservicecapability,itcan
