Introduction

Allnewweldingproceduretestsaretobecarriedoutinaccordancewiththisdocumentfromthedateofitsissue.However,thisdocumentdoesnotinvalidatepreviousweldingproceduretestsmadetoformernationalstandardsorspecificationsorpreviousissuesofthisdocument.

Twolevelsofweldingproceduretestsaregiveninordertopermitapplicationtoawiderangeofwelded

fabrication.Theyaredesignatedbylevels1and2.

Level1isbasedonrequirementsofASMESectionIXandlevel2isbasedonthepreviousissuesofthisdocument.

Scope

Thisdocumentspecifieshowapreliminaryweldingprocedurespecificationisqualifiedbywelding

proceduretests.

Thisdocumentappliestoproductionwelding,repairweldingandbuild-upwelding.

Thisdocumentdefinestheconditionsfortheexecutionofweldingproceduretestsandtherangeofqualificationforweldingproceduresforallpracticalweldingoperationswithinthequalificationofthisdocument.

Theprimarypurposeofweldingprocedurequalificationistodemonstratethatthejoiningprocessproposedforconstructioniscapableofproducingjointshavingtherequiredmechanicalpropertiesfortheintendedapplication.

Twolevelsofweldingproceduretestsaregiveninordertopermitapplicationtoawiderangeofweldedfabrication.Theyaredesignatedbylevels1and2.Inlevel2,theextentoftestingisgreaterandtherangesofqualificationaremorerestrictivethaninlevel1.

Proceduretestscarriedouttolevel2automaticallyqualifyforlevel1requirements,butnotvice-versa.Whennolevelisspecifiedinacontractorapplicationstandard,alltherequirementsoflevel2apply.

Thisdocumentappliestothearcandgasweldingofsteelsinallproductformsandthearcweldingof

nickelandnickelalloysinallproductforms.

ArcandgasweldingarecoveredbythefollowingprocessesinaccordancewithISO4063.

Theprinciplesofthisdocumentmaybeappliedtootherfusionweldingprocesses.

NOTE Aformerprocessnumberdoesnotrequireanewqualificationtestaccordingtothisdocument.

Specificationandqualificationofweldingproceduresthatweremadeinaccordancewithpreviouseditionsofthisdocumentmaybeusedforanyapplicationforwhichthecurrenteditionisspecified.Inthiscase,therangesofqualificationofpreviouseditionsremainapplicable.

ItisalsopossibletocreateanewWPQR(weldingprocedurequalificationrecord)rangeofqualificationaccordingtothiseditionbasedontheexistingqualifiedWPQR,providedthetechnicalintentofthetestingrequirementsofthisdocumenthasbeensatisfied.Whereadditionaltestshavetobecarriedouttomakethequalificationtechnicallyequivalent,itisonlynecessarytoperformtheadditionaltestonatestpiece.

Testpiece

Theweldedjointtowhichtheweldingprocedurewillrelateinproductionshallberepresentedbymakingastandardtestpieceorpieces,asspecifiedin

.

Ifrequiredbytheapplicationstandard,thedirectionofplaterollingshallbemarkedonthetestpiecewhenimpacttestsarerequiredtobetakenintheHeatAffectedZone(HAZ)andshallbementionedintheimpacttestreport.

Forlevel1:Anybuttjointtestqualifiesalljointconfigurations.

Forlevel2:Wherethejointrequirementsand/ordimensionofthetestpiecearenotcoveredbythestandardtestpiecesasshowninthisdocument,theuseofISO15613shallberequired.

Shapeanddimensionsoftestpieces

Thelengthornumberoftestpiecesshallbesufficienttoallowallrequiredteststobecarriedout.

Additionaltestpieces,orlongertestpiecesthantheminimumsize,maybepreparedinordertoallowforextratestingand/orforre-testingspecimens(see

7.6

).

PreparationandweldingoftestpiecesshallbecarriedoutinaccordancewiththepWPS,whichtheyshallrepresent.WeldingpositionsandlimitationsfortheangleofslopeandrotationofthetestpieceshallbeinaccordancewithISO6947.Iftackweldsaretobefusedintothefinaljoint,theyshallbeincludedinthetestpiece.

Theweldingandthetestingofthetestpieceshallbeverifiedbytheexaminerorexaminingbody.

Wheremechanicalpropertiesarerequiredbyanapplicationstandard,itshallbetestedaccordingly.Ifanadditionaltestpieceisneeded,thedimensionsshouldbesufficientenoughtoallowtestingofthemechanicalproperties.Forthisadditionaltestpiece,theweldingparameterrange,parentmaterialgroup,fillermetalandheattreatmentarerequiredtobethesame.

Foroutsidediameter≤50mm,noultrasonictestingisrequired,butradiographictestingisrequiredprovidedthatthejointconfigurationwillprovidevalidresults.Foroutsidediameter>50mmandwhereitisnottechnicallypossibletocarryoutultrasonictesting,aradiographictestingshallbecarriedoutprovidedthatthejointconfigurationwillprovidevalidresults.

Destructivetesting

Transversetensiletest

SpecimensandtestingfortransversetensiletestingforbuttjointshallbeinaccordancewithISO4136.Thetestshallrepresentthewholethicknessexceptasnecessarytoobtainparallelsidesonthespecimens.Tensiletestingshallensureallweldingprocessesusedandtheassociatedessentialvariablesaretested.

NOTEItisnotessentialtooverlapthespecimensasidentifiedinISO4136.

Forpipes>50mmoutsidediameter,theexcessweldmetalshallberemovedonbothfacestogivethe

testspecimenathicknessequaltothewallthicknessofthepipe.

Forpipes≤50mmoutsidediameter,forwhichthetransversetensiletestisperformedonthefullpipe,theexcessweldmetalmaybeleftundressedontheinsidesurfaceofthepipe.

Thetensilestrengthofthetestspecimenshallnotbelessthanthecorrespondingspecifiedminimumvaluefortheparentmetalunlessotherwisespecifiedpriortotesting.

Fordissimilarparentmetaljoints,thetensilestrengthshallnotbelessthantheminimumvalue

specifiedfortheparentmaterialhavingthelowesttensilestrength.

Bendtest

SpecimensandtestingforbendtestingforbuttjointsshallbeinaccordancewithISO5173:2009.

Forthicknesses<12mm,tworootandtwofacebendtestspecimensshallbetested.Forthicknesses

≥12mm,foursidebendspecimensmaybeusedinsteadofrootandfacebendtests.

Fordissimilarmetaljointsorheterogeneousbuttjointsinplates,onerootandonefacelongitudinal

bendtestspecimenmaybeusedinsteadoffourtransversebendtests.

Duringtesting,thetestspecimensshallnotrevealanyimperfection>3mminanydirection.Imperfectionsappearingatthecornersofatestspecimenduringtestingshallbeignoredintheevaluation.

Macroscopicexamination

ThetestspecimenshallbepreparedandetchedinaccordancewithISO17639ononesidetoclearly

revealthefusionline,theHAZandthebuild-upoftheruns.

Thetestspecimenshallincludeunaffectedparentmetalandshallberecordedbyatleastone

photographofmacrocross-sectionperproceduretest.

Theacceptancelevelsshallbeinaccordancewith

Impacttesting

Testspecimensandtestingforimpacttestsshallbeinaccordancewiththisdocumentforlocationofspecimensandtemperatureoftesting,andwithISO9016fordimensionsandtesting.Thestrikerradiusof2mmaccordingtoISO148-1shallbeused,unlessotherwisespecified.

Forweldmetal,testspecimentypeVWT(V:CharpyV-notch-W:notchinweldmetal-T:notchthroughthethickness)andforHAZspecimentypeVHT(V:CharpyV-notch-H:notchinheataffectedzone-T:notchthroughthethickness)shallbeused.Fromeachspecifiedlocation,eachsetshallbecomprisedofthreespecimens.

Specimensshallbesampledfromamaximumof2mmbelowtheuppersurfaceoftheparentmetalandtransversetotheweld.

IntheHAZ,themid-pointofthenotchshallbeat1mmto2mmfromthefusionline.Intheweldmetal,themid-pointofthenotchshallbeattheweldcentreline.

Forbuttjointswherethematerialthicknessist>50mm,twoadditionalsetsofspecimensshallbe

takenfromtherootarea,onesettakenintheweldandonesettakenfromtheHAZ.
