We’vebeentrackingMindHealthformorethanhalfadecadeandit’snowatitslowestpoint:almosthalfthepopulationsurveyedisnot
doingwell,withyoungpeoplehitevenharder.Themaindriversremainfinancialstrain,workstress,uncertaintyaboutthefuture,butdigital
habitsintensifythepressure-peoplenowspendmorethan5hoursonscreensoutsideofworkand2in3sayitnegativelyaffectstheir
dailylife.Themainbarriertogettinghelpisinternal:toomanypeoplestilldon’tseekprofessionalsupportbecausetheydon’tconsidertheirsituationseriousenough.Raisingawareness,fosteringdebateand
providingsolutionsremainscrucialandatAXA,wewanttoplayourpart.
AreAItoolshelpingorhurting?
AIcouldbeoneofthebiggestbreakthroughsinmindhealth-butwithoutguardrails,alsooneofthebiggestrisks.Ontheonehand,AIdemocratizesaccess-it’sfree,immediate,available24/7–andisalreadypartofpeople’semotionalliveswith6in10usingittoseekmentalhealthadvice.Buttherisksarereal:manyapplyadvicethatisnotmedicallyvalidated,andalmost1in3sayAIhasledthemtoharmfulbehavior.
Whatisalsoworryingisashiftintrust-awayfromfriends,familyandhealthcareprofessionals,towardsmachines.AIcanopenthedoor
tosupport,butitmustbeshapedbyclinicallygroundedtoolsfrom
trustedhealthplayersthatguidepeopletowardtherighthuman
supportwhenitmattersmost-becauseultimatelyAIcanneverreplacehumanconnection.

What’sthemainevolutionyoucansee
intheMindHealthIndexsinceitslaunch?
Atroublingparadoxliesattheheartofmodernprogress.Despiterobusteconomicgrowthandremarkabletechnologicaladvancement,mentalwellbeingisworsening:theshare
ofpeoplestrugglingorlanguishinghasrisenoverthelasthalfdecadefrom40%to46%.
Thecausesarecounterintuitive.Hyper-connectivityhasnotcuredloneliness—ithasdeepenedit,particularlyamongtheyoung.Economicexpansionhasnotdelivered
stabilityforindividuals—anxietyoverjobsandfinancialstabilitypersist.Weknowthatrealhumancontactisirreplaceable,yetwesurrenderfivehoursdailytoscreens.
Theconversation,atleast,isopeningup.Andcautiousoptimismiswarranted.
Technology,properlydeployed,mayyetformpartoftheremedy.
Thequestionremainstowhatextentsocietiesandindividualscanfocustheireffort
anddisciplinetoharnesstechnologyinawaythatstrengthenstheirmentalresilience.

respondentspotentiallyaffectedbydepression,anxietyorstress(DASS)atsevereormoreextremelevels.The3-pointrisesince2022representsaworryingtrend,
giventhesignificantsocialandeconomicburdensassociated
withthis“silentepidemic”.

Thisyear’scontinueddeclineinmentalhealthamongyoung
peoplereflectsapatternwidelyreportedinpost-pandemic
research,whereby18-to34-year-oldsareshowinghigherlevelsofseveresymptomsrelatedtodepression,anxietyandstress.
Almostallofthereportedriskfactorsrelatedtomentalhealth(worldinstability,climateanxiety,rapidworkandtechnologiestransformations)impactyoungadultsmorethanotherage
categories.
Inparticular,theyreportexcessiveuseofdigital(16pointsabovetheaverage),fearofmissingoutinsocialmedia(+17points),
lonelinessandsocialisolation(+13points)asdetrimentaltotheirwellbeing.

bettermentalhealth–anditisnotanexternalfactor.Rather,itistheindividuallackofunderstandingaroundwhatconstitutesgoodmentalhealth,thechallengesthataffectitandrecognizingwhenandwheretoseekprofessionalmedicalhelp.
Whileattentionaroundmentalhealthhasneverbeenhigher,the
surveyshowsthatevenmoreworkmustbedonetoeducatethe
populationaroundtheopportunitiestoimprovethewaytheythinkandfeel.

“Despitetheincreaseinawarenesscampaignstohighlightthe
importanceoflookingafterourmentalhealth;lackofself-awarenessandstigmastillexist.
There’sabeliefthatchallengestomentalhealthdon’twarrantmedicalattention(36%ofrespondents),eventhoughweknowthat46%are
languishingorstrugglingworldwide.lt’sastrikingdifferential.Many
peoplethinkthatahealthprofessionalwon’tbeabletotreattheir
struggles(suchasanxiety,sleepingproblems,moodswings,eating
disorders…).However,mindhealthisequallyasimportantasphysicalhealth,andtheearlieranindividualreachesoutforsupport,thebettertheoutcomes.Earlytreatmentcanavoidmorecomplexproblems,
constantmentalpressureandburnout.Acrosstheglobe,therehasbeenanoticeableriseinsickness-relatedabsenceintheworkplace,with
