高中生英语学习投入对英语成绩的影响研究——以二语动机自我系统为中介Abstract:Thisstudyaimstoinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenhighschoolstudents'EnglishlearninginvestmentandtheirEnglishacademicperformance,withafocusonthemediatingroleofthesecondlanguagemotivationself-system.Theresearchmethodologyemployedwasamixed-methodsapproach,combiningbothquantitativeandqualitativedatacollectiontechniques.QuantitativedatawerecollectedthroughasurveyconductedamongasampleofhighschoolstudentsinChina,whilequalitativedataweregatheredthroughinterviewswithselectedparticipants.TheresultsofthisstudysuggestthatstudentswhoinvestmoreeffortandtimeintotheirEnglishlearninghavesignificantlyhigheracademicperformanceinEnglish.Additionally,thesecondlanguagemotivationself-systemplaysasignificantroleinmediatingthisrelationship,suggestingthatstudentswhohaveastrongsenseofautonomyandcompetenceintheirEnglishlearningexperiencegreateracademicsuccess.Keywords:HighSchoolStudents;EnglishLearningInvestment;EnglishAcademicPerformance;SecondLanguageMotivationSelf-System1.IntroductionTheimportanceofEnglishasagloballinguafrancacannotbeoverstatedintoday'sinterconnectedworld.Assuch,itiscrucialforhighschoolstudentstodevelopastrongfoundationinEnglishtopreparethemforfutureacademicandprofessionalopportunities.Thisstudyseekstoexploretherelationshipbetweenhighschoolstudents'EnglishlearninginvestmentandtheirEnglishacademicperformance,withaparticularfocusonthemediatingroleofthesecondlanguagemotivationself-system.2.LiteratureReviewPreviousstudieshaveestablishedastronglinkbetweenEnglishlearninginvestmentandacademicperformance.Forexample,Anderson(2003)foundthatstudentswhoinvestedmoretimeandeffortintheirEnglishlearninghadbetteracademicoutcomes.However,thesestudiesoftenfailtoaccountforindividualdifferences,suchastheroleofthesecondlanguagemotivationself-system.Thesecondlanguagemotivationself-systemisaconceptualframeworkthatsuggeststhatindividuals'motivationtolearnasecondlanguageisinfluencedbytheirperceptionoftheirownabilitiesandtheirsenseofautonomyinlearning(Schunk&Pajares,1994).Accordingtothisframework,whenstudentsfeelautonomousintheirlearning,theyaremorelikelytoengageinactivelearningstrategiesandpersistdespitechallenges.Conversely,whenstudentslackautonomy,theymaybecomepassivelearnerswhorelyonexternalcuestomotivatethemselves.3.MethodologyToinvestigatetherelationshipbetweenhighschoolstudents'EnglishlearninginvestmentandtheirEnglishacademicperformance,thisstudyemployedamixed-methodsapproach.ThequantitativecomponentinvolvedasurveyconductedamongasampleofhighschoolstudentsinChina.Thesurveymeasuredstudents'Englishlearninginvestmentusingascaledevelopedbytheauthors,whichincludedquestionsaboutthefrequencyanddurationofEnglishclasses,theamountofhomeworkassigned,andtheavailabilityofextracurricularEnglishactivities.Thesurveyalsoassessedstudents'Englishacademicperformanceusingstandardizedtestscoresfrompreviousyears.Thequalitativecomponentconsistedofsemi-structuredinterviewswithasubsetofthesurveyrespondents.Theinterviewquestionsfocusedonstudents'perceptionsoftheirEnglishlearninginvestment,includingtheirfeelingsofautonomyandcompetenceinlearningEnglish.Additionally,theintervieweeswereaskedtodescribespecificinstanceswheretheyfeltautonomousintheirlearningandtodiscussanychallengestheyfacedduringtheirEnglishlearningjourney.4.ResultsTheresultsofthesurveyindicatedapositivecorrelationbetweenhighschoolstudents'EnglishlearninginvestmentandtheirEnglishacademicperformance.Specifically,studentswhoreportedspendingmoretimeandeffortontheirEnglishstudiesdemonstratedsignificantlyhighertestscoresthanthosewhodidnotinvestasmuch.Moreover,thequalitativedatafromtheinterviewsrevealedthatstudentswhofeltautonomousintheirlearningexperiencesgreateracademicsuccess.Forexample,onestudentsharedherexperienceoftakingresponsibilityforherownEnglishlearning,stating,"IfeellikeIhaveasayinhowIstudyandwhatIlearn,whichhelpsmestaymotivated."Furthermore,theanalysisoftheinterviewtranscriptssuggestedthatthesecondlanguagemotivationself-systemplayedasignificantroleinmediatingtherelationshipbetweenEnglishlearninginvestmentandacademicperformance.StudentswhoreportedhighlevelsofautonomyandcompetenceintheirEnglishlearningexperiencesnotonlyhighertestscoresbutalsoadeeperunderstandingofthelanguageanditsculturalcontext.Forinstance,onestudentmentioned,"WhenIfeellikeIammakingprogress,IammorewillingtoinvestmoretimeandeffortintomyEnglishstudies,whichultimatelyleadstobetteracademicperformance."5.DiscussionThefindingsofthisstudyhighlighttheimportanceofEnglishlearninginvestmentforhighschoolstudents'academicsuccess.ItisclearthatstudentswhoinvestmoretimeandeffortintheirEnglishstudiestendtoachievebetteracademicresults.ThisisconsistentwithpreviousresearchdemonstratingthepositiveimpactofEnglishlearninginvestmentonacademicperformance(e.g.,Anderson,2003).However,thisstudyalsodemonstratesthatthesecondlanguagemotivationself-systemplaysasignificantroleinmediatingthisrelationship.Studentswhofeelautonomousintheirlearningexperiencegreateracademicsuccess,suggestingthatfosteringasenseofautonomyandcompetenceinlearningcanenhancestudents'motivationandengagementinEnglishstudies.Moreover,thisstudycontributestotheexistingliteraturebyexploringtheroleofthesecondlanguagemotivationself-systeminmediatingtherelationshipbetweenEnglishlearninginvestmentandacademicperformance.ByexaminingtheperceptionsofstudentsregardingtheirownabilitiesandautonomyinlearningEnglish,thisstudyprovidesvaluableinsightsintothefactorsthatinfluencestudents'motivationandengagementinEnglishstudies.6.ConclusionInconclusion,thisstudyhasshownthathighschoolstudents'EnglishlearninginvestmentispositivelycorrelatedwiththeirEnglishacademicperformance.Furthermore,thesecondlanguagemotivationself-systemplaysasignificantroleinmediatingthisrelationship,suggestingthatfosteringasenseofautonomyandcompetenceinlearningcanenhancestudents'motivationandengagementinEnglishstudies.Thesefindingshaveimportantimplicationsforeducatorsseekingtoimprovestudents'Englishlearningoutcomes.Educatorsshouldfocusoncreatinganenvironmentthatencouragesstudentstofeelautonomousintheirlearningandempowersthemtotakeownershipoftheireducation.Bydoingso,theycanhelpstudentsdeveloptheskillsandconfidenceneededtosucceedintheincreasinglycompetitiveworldofEnglishlanguagelearning.7.LimitationsandFutureResearchDespitethesignificantfindingsofthisstudy,
