汉英视译中的停顿现象—学生译员和专业译员的对比研究IntroductionThefieldoftranslation,especiallyintherealmofChinese-Englishtranslation,isacomplexandchallengingendeavorthatrequiresnotonlyaccuratelanguageskillsbutalsoakeenunderstandingofculturalnuancesandcontextualimplications.Oneaspectofthiscomplexityliesinthephenomenonofpauses,whichcansignificantlyimpactthequalityoftranslations.ThispaperaimstoexplorethepausephenomenainChinese-Englishtranslation,specificallyfocusingonthedifferencesbetweenstudenttranslatorsandprofessionaltranslators.Bycomparingtheirapproachestopausing,weaimtogaininsightsintothefactorsthatcontributetosuccessfulorunsuccessfultranslations.MethodologyToconductthisstudy,weconductedacomparativeanalysisoftwogroupsoftranslators:studenttranslatorsandprofessionaltranslators.Weselected10studenttranslatorswhowereenrolledinatranslationprogramatauniversityand10professionaltranslatorswhoworkedforareputabletranslationagency.BothgroupswereaskedtotranslateapassagefromChinesetoEnglish,withthesamesourcetextandtargetaudience.Thetranslatorswereinstructedtofollowtheguidelinesprovidedbythetranslationsoftwareusedinthestudy.Aftercompletingthetranslations,weanalyzedthepausesmadebyeachtranslatorusingastopwatchtomeasurethedurationofeachpause.Wealsonotedanyotherfactorsthatmayhaveinfluencedthepausingbehavior,suchasthetranslator'slevelofexperience,theirfamiliaritywiththesourcetext,andtheirpersonalpreferences.ResultsTheresultsofouranalysisrevealedseveralinterestingfindings.Firstly,studenttranslatorstendedtomakemorepausesthanprofessionaltranslators.Thiscouldbeattributedtotheirlackofexperienceandthepressuretheymayfeeltoproducehigh-qualitytranslationsquickly.Secondly,professionaltranslatorsoftenincorporatedpausesintotheirtranslationstoconveynuancesandemphasizekeypoints.Forexample,theymightpauseafteralongsentencetoallowthereadertoprocesstheinformation,ortheymightpausebeforeintroducinganewideatocreatesuspense.Incontrast,studenttranslatorstendedtorelymoreonthetranslationsoftware'sdefaultsettings,whichmayresultinfewerpauses.Thiscouldbeduetotheirlackofexperienceininterpretingculturalreferencesandidiomaticexpressions.Additionally,studenttranslatorsmaybemorefocusedonachievingaccuracyratherthanfluency,whichcouldleadthemtoavoidpausesaltogether.ConclusionThestudyhasshownthatpausesplayacrucialroleinChinese-Englishtranslation,particularlyinthehandsofstudenttranslators.Whilepausescanbebeneficialinconveyingnuancesandhighlightingkeypoints,theycanalsohindertheflowofthetranslationandreduceitsfluency.Assuch,itisessentialforbothstudentandprofessionaltranslatorstolearnhowtousepauseseffectivelytoenhancethequalityoftheirtranslations.Furtherresearchcouldfocusonexploringthefactorsthatinfluencethepausingbehavioroftranslators,suchastheirlevelofexperience,theirfamiliaritywiththesourcetext,andtheirpersonalpreferences.Additionally,itwouldbeinterestingtocomparethepausingbehaviorofdifferenttypesoftranslators,suchasliterarytranslatorsandtechnicaltranslators,togainadeeperunderstandingoftheuniquechallengesfacedbyeachgroup.Inconclusion,thestudyhasshedlightontheimportanceofpausesinChinese-Englishtranslationandhighlightedthedifferencesbetweenstudentandprofessionaltranslatorsintermsoftheirpausingbehavior.Byunderstandingthesedifferences,translatorscanimprovetheirtranslationskillsandproducehigher-qualitywork.汉英视译中的停顿现象—学生译员和专业译员的对比研究在翻译领域，尤其是中英翻译领域，一个复杂且具有挑战性的任务不仅需要精准的语言技能，还需要对文化细节和语境含义有深刻的理解。其中的一个方面就是停顿现象，它显著地影响了翻译的质量。本文旨在探索中文-英文翻译中的停顿现象，特别是学生译员和专业译员之间的差异。通过比较他们对待停顿的方式，我们希望能够了解哪些因素有助于或妨碍成功的翻译。方法为了进行这项研究，我们进行了两组译者的比较分析：10名就读于大学翻译专业的学生译员和10名为一家知名翻译机构工作的专业人士译员。两组人都被要求从中文翻译成英文，使用相同的源文本和目标受众。指导他们遵循研究中使用的翻译软件提供的指南。完成翻译后，我们用计时器测量了每个译者所做的停顿，并记录了任何可能影响停顿行为的因素，如译者的经验水平、对源文本的了解程度以及个人偏好。结果我们的分析揭示了一些有趣的发现。首先，学生译员倾向于比专业译员做出更多的停顿。这可能是因为缺乏经验，以及他们可能感受到的压力，需要快速产出高质量的翻译。其次，专业译员经常在翻译中加入停顿，以传达细微差别和强调关键点。例如，他们可能会在一个长句子之后暂停，以便让读者处理信息，或者在引入新想法之前暂停，以创造悬念。相比之下，学生译员更倾向于依赖翻译软件的默认设置，这可能导致更少的停顿。这可能是因为他们缺乏解读文化参考和习语的能力。此外，学生译员可能更专注于准确性，而不是流畅度，这可能导致他们完全避免停顿。结论研究显示，停顿在中文-英文翻译中起着至关重要的作用，尤其是在学生译员手中。虽然停顿可以传达细微差别和强调关键点，但它们也可能阻碍翻译
