2.Motivation:DiscoveryHistoryasaReplaySimulator

Consideranagentnavigatingtowardagoalinanunfamiliarenvironment.Duringitsfirsttraversal,theagentmayfollowinefficientroutes,encounterdeadends,backtrack,andgraduallyconstructamapofthesurroundingspace.Oncerecorded,however,thisexperiencebecomesreusable:theresultingmapsupportsplanningwithoutrequiringtheagenttophysicallyrevisiteverylocation.Anewnavigationpolicycaninsteadreasonovertheaccumulatedmap,avoidknowndeadends,reconsiderearlierdecisions,andcomparealternativeroutesbeforeacting(Guptaetal.,2017).

Thisideaparallelsmodel-basedreinforcementlearning(M.Moerlandetal.,2023;Sutton,1990).

Amodelcaptureshowanenvironmentevolvesinresponsetoanagent'sactions,allowingpoliciestobetrainedorevaluatedthroughsimulatedexperienceratherthanrepeatedinteractionwiththerealenvironment(HaandSchmidhuber,2018).TheDreamerfamily(Hafneretal.,2019,2020,2023,2025)demonstratesthisprincipleparticularlyclearly:anagentlearnsacompactdynamicsmodelfromcollectedexperienceandimprovesitspolicybyimaginingtrajectorieswithinthatmodel.
