Even though the author ironically set Ivan to be a nut in ward no. 6 and it seems that what Ivan had said was nonsense, his words are full of wisdom after all. Gromov and Dr. Ragin had discussed a lot about the lif

3、e philosophy; especially Gromov always mucked Dr. Ragin at his Stoic attitude. Dr. Ragin had a friend, the postmaster Mihail Averyanitch. They traveled together but Ragin eventually found Averyanitch annoying. After he was judged as an insane person and sent into the ward, he experienced suffering f

4、or the first time in his life. “At the first coarse touch of life upon” him, he lost his sensitive heart. (Coulehan 2003) The doctor passed away in the end. We think that Chekhov intended to tell us that the real world is not like an opera which usually ends with apotheosis. The life will not end in

5、 compensation for peoples sufferings. In addition, we are also interested in the title of this novel, which was Ward no. 6. Why was it number 6 instead of other numbers?
