For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter with a single line through the center. 90 Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. Quite probably, no one appreciates the power of the written word more than a writer and a teacher. Since I am both, my inability to write with any power to my mother is one of the most serious failures of my life. My mother is the only person to whom I write in Chinese. She was born and brought up in China. Although her four America-born children can converse in her language, our fluency is elementary. Our literacy is less than that. People from Asia have poured into the United States in recent years, and much has been written about their need and efforts to learn English and American culture. But my situation is the reverse, and no less trying. I am an American attempting to reach to a language in order to communicate with a non-English-speaking parent. And I constantly find myself at a loss for words. There were Chinese words that will speak what I mean. I grasp at anything to dig them out; but they were never planted in my mind, and I unearth nothing. This happens whenever I speak to my mother in ordinary conversation. Writing, of course, is just as difficult, if not more. 1. The author is _. A. a writer B. a teacher C. a Chinese D. both A and B 2. By “Our literacy is less than that” (Para. 2, Line 3) the author means that their literacy is less _. A. than their fluency B. than fluent C. than elementary D. than both 3. Which of the following statements is NOT true? A. most people from Asia make great efforts to learn English. B. The author has problems in speaking Chinese. C. The authors mother does not speak English. D. Writing in Chinese is less difficult than speaking in Chinese. 4. The word “unearth” (Para. 3, Line 6) is nearest in meaning to _. A. bury B. discover C. plant D. reap 5. What is the best title for this passage? A. Words Fail Me in Chinese B. Language Problems Facing a Chinese Child C. My Difficulty in Learning Chinese D. The Importance of Chinese in My Family Passage Two Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage. Psychologist George Spilich and colleagues at Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland, decided to find out whether, as many smokers say, smoking helps them to 新视野大学英语综合技能训练 Students Book Unit 8, Book 1 91 “think and concentrate”. Spilich put young nonsmokers, active smokers and smokers deprived of cigarettes through a series of tests. In the first test, each subject sat before a computer screen and pressed a key as soon as he or she recognized a target letter among a grouping of 96. In this simple test, smokers, deprived smokers and nonsmokers performed equally well. The next test was more complex, requiring all to scan sequences of 20 identical letters and respond the instant one of the letters transformed into a different one. Nonsmokers were faster, but under the stimulation of nicotine, active smokers were faster than deprived smokers. In the third test of short term memory, nonsmokers made the fewest errors, but deprived smokers committed fewer errors than active smokers. The fourth test required people to read a passage, then answer questions about it. Nonsmokers remembered 19 percent more of the most important information than active smokers, and deprived smokers bested those who had smoked a cigarette just before testing. Active smokers tended not only to have poorer memories but also had trouble separating important information from insignificant details. “As our tests became more complex,” sums up Spilich, “nonsmokers performed better than smokers by wider and wider margins.” He predicts, “smokers might perform adequately at many jobs until they got complicated. A smoking airline pilot could fly adequately if no problems arose, but if something went wrong, smoking might damage his mental capacity.” 6. The purpose of George Spilichs experiments is _. A. to test whether smoking has a positive effect on the mental capacity of smokers B. to show how smoking damages peoples mental capacity C. to prove that smoking affects peoples regular performance D. to find out whether smoking helps peoples short term memory 7. George Spilichs experiment was conducted in such a way as to _. A. compel the subjects to separate major information from minor details B. put the subjects through increasingly complex tests C. check the effectiveness of nicotine on smokers D. register the prompt responses of the subjects 8. The word “bested” (Para. 5, Line 3) most probably means _. A. beat B. envied C. caught up with D. made the best of 9. Which of the following statements is true? A. Active smokers in general performed better than deprived smokers. B. Active smokers responded more quickly than the other subjects. C. Nonsmokers were not better than other subjects in performing simple tasks. D. Deprived smokers gave the slowest responses to the various tasks. 92 10. We can infer from the last paragraph that _. A. smokers should not expect to become airline pilots B. smoking in emergency cases causes mental illness C. no airline pilots smoke during flights D. smokers may prove unequal to handling emergency cases Passage Three Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage. Faces, like fingerprints, are unique. Did you ever wonder how it is possible for us to recognize people? Even a skilled writer probably could not describe all the features that make one face different from another. Yet a very young child or even an animal, such as a pigeoncan learn to recognize faces. We all take this ability for granted. We also tell people apart by how they behave. When we talk about someones personality, we mean th
