Unit 10 MoneyAs the saying goes, money makes the mare (母马) go. Its true that money plays an important part in our life. We cant go without it. Many people are determined to become a millionaire. But money is not everything. Owning much money doesnt necessarily bring happiness. Money can buy food but not appetite (食欲), medicine but not health, soft beds but not sleep, knowledge but not intelligence, finery (服饰) but not kindness, lustre (光泽) but not cheerfulness, fun but not happiness, friends but not friendship, servants but not faithfulness. So many people take good advantage of their money. Charles Gray is an example.Charles Gray is a real person from the USA. Years ago he was a university professor and a millionaire. However, he grew disillusioned (不抱希望的) with the wealthy and comfortable life he was leading and started to give all his money away. He thought it was unfair for some people to have so many of the worlds resources, when so many people in the world were living in poverty.Section_Warmup & Lesson 1 Prereading“Who wants to be a Millionaire? I dont,” says Charles Gray Angus Deayton interviews exmillionaire Charles GrayA lot of people are determined to become a millionaire. They spend half their time dreaming up ways of getting rich, and the rest of their time thinking about all the enjoyablethings they would do once they got rich. But do all millionaires find the happiness that they thought they would get when they achieve their goals? Some millionaires continue to be concerned about money when they become millionaires. They are hardworking to get all that money. Then they are hardworking to make sure they never lose it!But there are people who have turned their backs on their millions and found different ways to be happy in their lives. Charles Gray is one example.Sixteen years ago, Charles was a college professor with a huge sixbedroom house and $2 million. Today he lives in a small dormitory room where there is only secondhand furniture. There are certainly no signs that Charles was a rich man! There is a small garden outside with a few fruit trees. Charles grows some vegetables and a few flowers. He gets his clothes and a lot of other things from charity lionaire n百万富翁interview vt.&n. determined/dItmInd/adj.有决心的determine/dItmIn/vt.确定,决定dream up凭空想出,构思dream of/about梦见,梦想ways of doing sth.做某事的办法enjoyable/IndIbl/adj.使人快乐的they would do once they got rich是定语从句,修饰all the enjoyable things。 achieve ones goal达到目标concerned/knsnd/adj.担心的be concerned about担心,挂念concern/knsn/vt.使忧虑;与相关hardworking/hdwkI/adj.勤奋的turn ones back on不理睬;背弃,抛弃who引导定语从句,修饰先行词people。with prep.带有,附有dormitory/d mItri /n.寝室,宿舍where( in which)引导限制性定语从句,修饰先行词a small dormitory room。secondhand adj. But Charles appreciates this change. He was pleased to give up the lifestyle of a rich man. He was tired of being a person who had everything in a world where many people had nothing. He made the choice to give all his money away. And this, he said, brought him happiness.“A few years ago,” says Charles, “I was a millionaire, but was aware there were a lot of hungry people in the world.” Therefore he gave away all his money to charities. When he had two thousand dollars left, he gave away small bank notes in the streets of local poor areas. Did he feel like Father Christmas? “It was a lot of fun,” says Charles.Charles believes that many people want to earn a lot of money so that they will not have any worries. However, most people never make much money. Charles Gray decided to drop out and has discovered that having only a little money makes you free. Every day, we see it, use it, and it is one the tip of our tongue. Did you ever stop to consider where the money you carry around every day comes from?Making new money is a very unique job and no easy task. It has up to 65 steps. When the money in use gets dirty and worn out, it will be replaced with new money. The old money is taken from banks and brought to places where it is destroyed. Usually, the old money is burned. The burned money is replaced by new paper money. While old money is being replaced, new money is being printed in a place called a mint (铸币厂). Large sheets of paper are printed with many pictures of some currency These large sheets are cut into individual bills. The individual bills are then put together in big stacks and then sent to banks.Sometimes the mint will make a new bill with a new picture (photos of statesmen and places of interest are favoured) or a new colour. It is not easy for the government to make a new bill. It takes a long time, and there are many steps to go through before a new bill can be sent to banks. First, people in the government decide that a new kind of bill is needed. Then, they ask an artist to design the new bill. A different artist cuts the new picture into a soft piece of metal called a die. The dies are made and put onto large printing machines. Then, very special paper is used, which no one but the mint can have. Along with this special paper, the mint also prints currency using special colours. After the dies print the new currency onto the paper, the bills are cut, stacked, and sent off to the banks.1From the text we know that _.Abanks make new moneyBit takes 65 procedures to make new moneyCmints decide what kind of bill is neededDold money that is not used is forever stored in a special place解析:选B细节理解题。由第二段中的“It has up to 65 steps.” 2We can infer from the text that a die is _.Asomething for dead peopleBa special machine that prints the moneyCa special piece of paper that the money is made fromDa piece of metal that prints the picture onto the money解析:选D推理判断题。根据上下文,尤其是最后一段中的“A different artist cuts the new picture into a soft piece of metal called a die. Before setting off, I researched into it on the Internet. The Summer Palace is composed mostly of a lake, but its surrounded by beautiful greenery and a walkway that circles the lake. It is recommended that you give the Summer Palace about three hours. If you try to walk around it, it could take five or six hours. With that knowledge of it, I set off.The highlight of the tour had to be the view from the Tower of Buddhist Incense. It sits on top of a large hill overlooking the lake and that is worth the climb. It was built as a place to worship (敬拜) Buddha. And in the Summer Palace, unlike most of the other places, photography wasnt allowed in most of the buildings. Most of the statues of Buddha and the other artifacts (手工艺品) were offlimits to photos.Another highlight was seeing the stage created for the Dowager Empress where she watched the opera and other theater items. There are box seats that surround the stage and it was the largest stage created in all of Imperial China. You could almost imagine royalty reviewing the actors from the boxes and the stage.I do recommend taking a boat ride if you go, which takes you from one side of the lake to the other side where you can see another set of buildings. And it is fun. You can also rent an electric or paddle boat if you want. But since it was just me, I went on one of the biggest boats with other people.I spent another four hours wandering around the Summer Palace. But I didnt see all of it because it was getting dark. I am looking forward to visiting it again.9Before setting off to the Summer Palace, the author _.Aasked others about itBdidnt think it was largeCdidnt know what to seeDlearned something about it解析:选D细节理解题。根据第一段的“Before setting off, I researched into it on the Internet.”可知,出发前作者了解了一些颐和园的情况。10While visiting the Tower of Buddhist Incense, the author _.Aworshipped BuddhaBtouched some artifactsCcouldnt take photos as she likedDwasnt deeply impressed by it at all解析:选C推理判断题。根据第二段的“Most of the statues of Buddha and the other artifacts (手工艺品) were offlimits to photos.”可推断,作者不能尽情地拍照。11What do we know about the second highlight mentioned in the text?AIt sits on top of a hill.BIt is the largest stage al
