I always promised myself that Id get out as soon as possible. Now, at age 20, I have a good job and a nice house, and Im really proud of the independence Ive achieved (获得)Heres the problem: several of my friends who still live with their parents wish they had places like mineso much so that they make mine theirs. It started out with a couple of them spending the weekends with me. But now they seem to take it for granted (认为理所当然) that they can show up any time they like. They bring boyfriends over, talk on the phone and stay out forever.I enjoy having my friends here sometimesit makes the place feel comfortable and warmbut this is my home, not a party house. I am old enough to move out on my own,so why cant I seem to ask my friends to respect my privacy(私人空间)?JoanDear Joan,If your family didnt pay attention to your needs when you were a child, you probably have trouble letting others know your needs now.And if youve gathered your friends around you to rebuild a happy family atmosphere(气氛), you may fear that saying no will bring back the kind of conflict you grew up withor destroy the nice atmosphere you now enjoy. You need to understand that in true friendship its okay to put your own needs first from time to time.Be clear about the message you want to send. For example, “I really love your company but I also need some privacy. So please call before you come over.”Edward()36.We can infer from the first letter that_.AJoan considers her friends more important than her privacyBJoans friends visit her more often than she can acceptCJoan doesnt like the parties at allDJoan dislikes the boyfriends her friends bring over()37.According to Mr. Expert, why cant Joan tell her friends her feelings?AShe is afraid of hurting her friends.BShe does not understand true friendship.CHer family experience stops her from doing so.DShe does not put her needs first.BBill Gates and the president of General Motors have met for lunch, and Bill is going on and on about computer technology. “If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades, you would now be driving a V32 instead of a V8, and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour,” says Gates, “or you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles with a gallon of gas. In either case, the sticker price of a new car would be less than $50.Why havent you guys kept up?”The president of GM smiles and says, “Because the federal government wont let us build cars that crash four times a day.”Why is that funny (or not funny,as the case may be)? Human beings love to laugh, and the average adult laughs 17 times a day. Humans love to laugh so much that there are actually industries built around laughter. Jokes, sitcoms and comedies are all designed to get us laughing, because laughing feels good. For us it seems so natural, but the funny thing is that humans are the only species that laughs. Laughter is actually a complex response that involves many of the same skills used in solving problems.Laughter is a great thingthats why weve all heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine.” There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease. When we look at laughterwhat it is, what happens in our brains when we laugh, what makes us laugh and how it can make us healthier and happier, theres a huge amount about it that no one understands yet.()38.The best title of the passage is _.AJoke BLaughterCFun DHumor()39.Which of the following is true according to the passage?AHumans laugh because of jokes, sitcoms and comedies.BHumans laugh because it can fight disease.CHumans have gained skills to laugh since they are born.DLaughter is a complex response of humans.()40.What is the writer likely to talk about next?AWhat is laughter?BHow do people laugh?CWhen is laughter the best medicine?DWhere does laughter take place?CParents have to do much less for their children today than they used to do, and home has become much less of a workshop. Clothes can be bought ready made; washing can go to the laundry; food can be boughtcooked, canned or preserved; bread is baked and delivered by the baker; milk arrives on the doorstep; meat can be had at the restaurant, the works canteen, and the school dining room.It is unusual now for father to pursue his trade or other employment at home, and his children rarely, if ever, see him at his place of work. Boys are therefore seldom trained to follow their fathers occupation, and in many towns they have a fairly wide choices of employment and so do girls. The young wageearner often earns good money, and soon acquires a feeling of economic independence. In textile areas it has long been customary for mothers to go out to work, but this practice has become so widespread that the working mother is now a not unusual factor in a childs home life, the number of married women in employment having more than doubled in the last twentyfive years. With mother earning and his older children drawing substantial wages, father is seldom the dominant figure that he still was at the beginning of the century. When mother works, economic advantages accrue, but children lose something of great value if mothers employment prevents her from being home to greet them when they return from school.()41.The writer mentions home as workshop because _.Afathers often pursue employment at homeBparents had to make food and necessities themselves for their daily lifeCmany families produce goods at home for saleDboth fathers and mothers in most families are workers()42.The writer says that home has become much less of a workshop. He means _.Ain the past, home was more like a workshopBhome is much more of a workshop nowChome workshops are becoming fewer and fewerDhome was less like a workshop in the past()43.The word “accrue” in the sentence “When mother.accrue,” is closest in meaning to _.Achange BdecreaseCdouble Dincrease()44.The chief reason that boys are seldom trained to follow their fathers occupation is _.Athat children nowadays rarely see their fathers at their place of workBthat fathers do not like to pursue employment at home any moreCthat there is a wide choice of employment for children.Dthat children also like to have jobs outsideD(原创)Does handwriting matter? Not very much, according to many educators. The Common Core Standards, which have been adopted in most states, call for teaching readable writing, but only in kindergarten and first grade. After that, the emphasis quickly shifts to proficiency on the keyboard. But psychologists and neuroscientists say it is far too soon to declare handwriting a relic(遗迹) of the past. New evidence suggests that the links between handwriting and broader educational development is deep.Children not only learn to read more quickly when they first learn to write by hand, but they also remain better able to create ideas and remember information. In other words, its not just what we write that mattersbut how.A study led by Karin James, a psychologist at Indiana University, lent support to that view. Children who had not yet learned to read and write were presented with a letter or a shape on an card and asked to reproduce it in one of three ways: draw the image on a page with a dotted outline(虚线), draw it on a blank white paper, or type it on a computer. They were then placed in a brain scanner and shown the image again. The researchers found that when children had drawn a letter freehand, the activity in three areas of the brain were increased. There three areas of the brain work actively in adults when they read and write. By contrast, children who typed or drew the letter or shape showed no such effect.Dr.James attributes the differences to the messiness inherent(固有的) in freeform handwriting: Not only must we first plan and take action in a way that is not required when we have a traceable outline, but we are also likely to produce a result that is highly variable. That variability may itself be a learning tool.“When a kid produces a messy letter,” James said, “that might help him learn it.”Our brain must understand that each possible repetition of, say, an “a” is the same, no matter how we see it is written. Being able to decipher the messiness of each “a” may be more helpful in establishing that eventual representation than seeing the same result repeatedly.“This is one of the first demonstrations of the brain being changed because of that practice,” James said.In another study, James is comparing children who physically form letters with those who only watch others doing it. Her observations suggest that it is only the actual effort that engages the brains motor pathways and delivers the learning benefits of handwriting. The effect goes well beyond letter recognition. In a study that followed children in grades two through five, Virginia Berninger, a psychologist at the University of Washington, demonstrated that printing, cursive(草书的) writing, and typing on a keyboard are all associated with distinct and separate brain patternsand each results in a distinct end product. When the children composed text by hand, they not only consistently produced more words more quickly than they did on a keyboard, but expressed more ideas. And brain imaging in the oldest subjects suggested that the connection between writing and idea generation went even further. When these children were asked to come up with ideas for a composition, the ones with better handwriting showed greater neural activation in areas associated with working memoryand increased overall activation in the reading and writing networks.Cursive or not, the benefits of writing by hand extend beyond childhood. For adults, typing may be a fast and efficient alternative to longhand(普通手写), but that very efficiency may decrease our ability to process new information. Not only do we learn letters better when we commit them to memory through writing, memory and learning ability in general may benefit.()45.Why dont psychologists and neuroscientists regard handwriting as a relic of the past?AIts far too soon to declare.BHandwriting is common in life.CHandwriting helps childrens education.DThey like handwriting.()46.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?AMany educators emphasize handwriting from kindergarten to university.BHow to write is equally important as what to write.CWe must plan and execute the action when we have a traceable outline.DHandwriting cannot benefit children.()47.What can be inferred from Karin Jamess study?AThe involved children who couldnt read and write.BChildren were asked to draw, trace or type once.CResearchers played with children.DTyping had the same effect as handwriting.()48.What does the underlined word “decipher” mean in Paragraph 10?ARepeat. BPositive.CNegative. DIndifferent.非选择题部分(共35分)第三部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。Everyone knows about straightA students. We see them frequently in TV programs and in movies. The kids at the top of the class get there by mastering a few basic techniques that others can learn in an easy way. Thus it is necessary for you to learn the secrets of becoming straightA students.Among the students we have interviewed, study times are a matter of personal preference. Some work late at night when it is quiet, where as others awake early. And there are still others who decide to study as soon as they come home from school when the work is fresh in their minds. All of them agree, however, on the need for study time. “Whatever I was doing, I would find some time every day for studying,” says a top student from New Jersey.Being organized is another habit they share in common. McCray, an outstanding student interviewed, runs track, plays football and is in a ban
