fact, researchers say, speaking two languages appears to be more important than the level of education in defending against dementias.A study in India examined the effect of knowing more than one language in delaying the first signs of several dementias.Researchers studied nearly 650 people whose average age was 66.240 of those studied suffered from Alzheimers, the most common form of mental decline(下降).391 of the subjects spoke two or more languages.Researchers found the dementias began about four-and-a-half years later in those who spoke two languages pared to those who spoke only one language. The level of education had no effect on the age at the first sign of dementia.Thomas Bak,from the Center of Cognitive Aging at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, who helped to organize the study, suggests that individuals who speak more than one language train their brains by moving back and forth between different words and expressions. He also believes this effort improves what scientists called executive(执行的) functioning, which often weakens in people with dementias. He states that researchers found there was no extra gain in speaking more than two languages.Mr Bak says it does not appear important whether you learn another language at a young age or later in life. Its not something that “you missed the boat when you do not do it as a baby.” It is something that is still quite useful and powerful when you do it as an adult.1.The finding of the study is that.A.learning more than one language can cure dementiasB.speaking two languages may delay kinds of dementiasC.the level of education matters in defending against dementiasD.people who suffer from dementias will lose mental ability答案:B解析:根据文章第一段的第一句“New research suggests that speaking more than one language may studyD.methods that were used in the study答案:A解析:由第二段可知,这391个人是属于650个被实验的人之中的,故此处subjects相当于people,选A项。3.According to Mr Bak,.A.the more languages one speaks, the less chance of getting dementiasB.peoples executive functioning often strengthens with ageC.when you learn one more language makes no differenceD.it is much easier to learn one more language at a young age答案:C解析:根据最后一段的第一句“Mr Bak says it does not appear important whether you learn another language at a young age or later in life.”可知选C项。4.This passage may probably be seen in .A.a research planB.a while looking for a house for me and our children.During the first week of his stay,he went out one day to do some shopping. He came back in the late afternoon to discover that his suitcase was gone.He was extremely worried as the suitcase had all his important papers, including his passport. He reported the case to the police and then sat there, lost and lonely in a strange city, thinking of the terrible troubles of getting all the paperwork organised again from a distant country while trying to settle down in a new one.Late in the evening, the phone rang.It was a stranger. He was trying to pronounce my husbands name and was asking him a lot of questions. Then he said they had found a pile of papers in their trash can(垃圾桶)that had been left out on the footpath. My husband rushed to their home to find a kind family holding all his papers and documents.Their young daughter had gone to the trash can and found a pile of unfamiliar papers. Her parents had carefully sorted them out, although they had found mainly foreign addresses on most of the documents. At last they had seen a half-written letter in the pile in which my husband had given his new telephone number to a friend. That family not only restored the important documents to us that day but also restored our faith and trust in people. We still remember their kindness and often send a warm wish their way.5.What did Rashid plan to do after his arrival in Sydney?A.Go shopping.B.Find a house.C.Join his family.D.Take a vacation.答案:B解析:细节理解题。从第一段中的“.looking for a house for me and our children.”可知,Rashid到了悉尼之后,计划为家人找一座房子。6.The girls underlined word“restored”in the last paragraph mean?A.Showed.B.Sent out.C.Delivered.D.Gave back.答案:D解析:词义猜测题。从最后一段最后一句“We still remember their kindness.”可知,那一家人把Rashid的文件还给了他。由此推出restored意为“归还”,故选D项。8.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A.From India to Australia.B.Living in a New Country.C.Turning Trash to Treasure.D.In Search of New Friends.答案:C解析:主旨大意题。标题要与文章的内容相关,既要有高度的概括性,同时又能吸引读者的注意力。Turning Trash to
