While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. You wont feel any immediate effects, but if you sit for long periods of time its important that you take note of how long you have your legs crossed for. You shouldnt have your legs crossed for more than 15 minutes, and its important that you get up and walk around at least once every hour.Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, its best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but its not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. Since your pelvic bone supports your neck and spine, this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck. You also might notice that when you sit with your legs crossed for long periods of time your feet and legs get tingly or have the feeling of being asleep. This is because when one leg sits on top of the other it causes pressure on the veins and nerves in your legs and feet. It can cause numbness or temporary paralysis in the legs, ankles, or feet. While the feeling of discomfort may only last a minute or two, repeatedly crossing your legs until they feel numb can cause permanent nerve damage. So next time you sit down, try to get yourself in the habit of sitting with both of your feet on the floor. Not only will it help your posture and stability, but it will also save your health in the long run.1. According to the passage, which is not the problem caused by sitting with your legs crossed?A. Increase blood pressureB. Cause neck and back painC. Lead to numbness or temporary paralysisD. Keep in a twisted position2. Whats the best explanation of the underlined word “circulate”?A. Go straightB. Move aroundC. Fall downD. Work against gravity3. Which of the following statement is true?A. Once you cross your legs while sitting, youll feel immediate effects.B. The numbness in the legs ,ankles or feet wont cause permanent nerve damage.C. The perfect posture for sitting is to sit with your feet planted flat and hip width apart.D. As long as you cross your legs for less than 15 minutes, it wont do harm to your health.【答案】1. D 2. B 3. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic bones to rotate. 根据第二段中的“because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. Ideally, its best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor. 如第2小题,推测“circulate”词义,根据第二段中的“because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate. This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart. BMicrosoft has developed a new smartphone app that interprets eye signals and translates them into letters, allowing people with motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone. The GazeSpeak app combines a smartphones camera with artificial intelligence to recognize eye movements in real time and convert them into letters, words and sentences. For people suffering from ALS(渐冻症), also known as motor neurone disease, eye movement can be the only way they are able to communicate.“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS are expensive, not robust under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration(再校准)and relatively steady setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology.“To reduce the shortcomingswe created GazeSpeak, an eye-gesture communication system that runs on a smartphone, and is designed to be low-cost, robust, portable and easy to learn.”The app is used by the listener by pointing their smartphone at the speaker. A chart that can be stuck to the back of the smartphone is then used by the speaker to determine which eye movements to make in order to communicate. The sticker shows four grids of letters, which each correspond to a different eye movement. By looking up, down, left or right, the speaker selects which grids the letters they want belong to. The artificial intelligence algorithm is then able to predict the word or sentence they are trying to say.Zhangs research, Smartphone-Based Gaze Gesture Communication for People with Motor Disabilities, is set to be presented at the Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems in May.4. According to the passage, which of the following is true about GazeSpeak?A. The GazeSpeak app can recognize eye movements directly.B. It allows ALS suffers to commucicate with others without a phoneC. ALS suffers can use several ways to communicate.D. Smartphone app helps ALS suffers speak with their eyes.5. Why is the new smartphone app better than the older one?A. Its economical, robust and easy to use.B. Its expensive, not robust under sunlight.C. It requires frequent re-calibration.D. It combines a smart phones camera with artificial intelligence.6. Whats the real purpose of the passage?A. To sell a new smartphone.B. To persuade consumers to buy a new smartphone app.C. To introduce a new smartphone app.D. To develop a new smartphone app.【答案】4. D 5. A 6. Microsoft has developed a new smartphone app , allowing motor neurone disease to communicate with others from a phone. 第四段“Current eye-tracking input systems for people with ALS or other motor problems are expensive, not strong under sunlight, and require frequent re-calibration(校对) and abundant, relatively immobile setups,” said Xiaoyi Zhang, a researcher at Microsoft who developed the technology. C。COn the day the tornado hit, there was no sign severe weather was on its waythe sky was blue and the sun had been out. My husband Jimmy and I were watching TV upstairs. No sooner had we got the coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to get through to get to the relative safety of the first floor. As we struggled to reach the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.By the time I reached the closet, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldnt get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmys arm and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and head were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.“Hold on! Hold on!” he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to.All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldnt believe it was over. Jimmy said hed go outside to check. “No,” I said. “Dont leave me. Dont leave me.”Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes. In that time, four of the twelve town houses in our unit were completely destroyed. Of the houses left standing, ours suffered the most damage. Amazingly, none of us were severely injured.7. Which of the following sentences is NOT the evidence to show the tornado is violent?A. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard.B. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out.C. Our neighbor says the storm lasted four minutes.D. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere.8. From the passage, we can infer that_.A. The couple had predicted the arrival of the tornado in advance.B. Jimmy flew right out the back of the house and into the bay during the tornado.C. The three-foot-tree flew over the couples head and injured them badly.D. The author still felt scared when the tornado was suddenly over.9. Why did the author feel “no pain” in paragraph4?A. She didnt hurt badly enough to sense the pain.B. She was severely injured and failed to sense the pain.C. Her attention was fully focused on her husband.D. She had let her husband go away from her hand.10. Which of the following phrases best describes the couples experience in this tornado?A. A thrilling adventure B. A narrow escapeC. A risky attempt D. A serious accident【答案】7. C 8. D 9. C 10. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us. 根据第三段中的“If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.” A. A narrow escape九死一生;C. A risky attempt危险的尝试;D. The best years of your life?
