Abstract

Withthedevelopmentoftechnology,thefieldofeducationhasgraduallyintegratedemergingtechnologiesintotraditionalteachingmethods,andgame-basedlearninghasbecomeapopulartrendineducation.Inthispaper,weproposeadesignanddevelopmentframeworkforaneducationalgamethatincorporatesbodysensinginteractiontechnologytoenhancetheimmersiveandinteractiveexperienceofthegame.Thepaperdiscussesthedesignrequirements,technicalarchitecture,gamescenes,gamemechanics,andgamelogicsofthegamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnology.Toevaluatethefeasibilityandeffectivenessofthegame,weconductedauserstudywith50primaryschoolstudents.Theresultsshowthatthegamenotonlyimprovesthestudents'learningperformancebutalsoenhancestheirengagementandmotivationinlearning.

Introduction

Digitalgamesofferamoreinteractiveandengaginglearningexperiencethatcanhelpstudentsdevelopproblem-solvingskills,logicalthinking,andcreativity(Gee,2003).Game-basedlearninghasbeenwidelyusedineducationtoenhancestudents'cognitiveandsocial-emotionaldevelopment(Prensky,2001).However,traditionaleducationalgamesstillfacesomelimitationsintermsofinteractionandimmersion.Inrecentyears,bodysensinginteractiontechnologyhasemergedasanewwaytoenhancetheimmersiveandinteractiveexperienceofeducationalgames.

Bodysensinginteractiontechnologyisatypeofinteractivetechnologythatusessensorsandalgorithmstodetectandanalyzethemovementsandgesturesofthehumanbody(Dourish,2001).Thistechnologycancapturetheuser'sbodymovementsandtranslatethemintogameactions,providingamorenaturalandimmersivegameexperience.Theapplicationofbodysensinginteractiontechnologyineducationalgamescancreateagameenvironmentthatismoreconducivetolearning.

Theaimofthispaperistoproposeadesignanddevelopmentframeworkforaneducationalgamethatincorporatesbodysensinginteractiontechnologyandevaluateitseffectivenessinimprovingstudents'learningperformance.Inthefollowingsections,wewillfirstdiscussthedesignanddevelopmentframeworkoftheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnology.Thenwewillpresenttheresultsofauserstudyconductedwithprimaryschoolstudentstoevaluatethefeasibilityandeffectivenessofthegame.

DesignandDevelopmentFramework

DesignRequirements

Thedesignrequirementforaneducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnologyistoprovideanimmersiveandengaginggameexperiencethatcanenhancestudents'learningperformanceandmotivation.Thegameshouldtakeadvantageofthebodysensinginteractiontechnologytoprovideamorenaturalandintuitivegameinteraction.Thegameshouldalsobedesignedtohaveaclearlearningobjective,andthegamemechanicsshouldberelatedtothelearningcontent.

TechnicalArchitecture

Thetechnicalarchitectureoftheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnologyconsistsofthreemaincomponents:thebodysensingdevice,thegameengine,andthelearningmanagementsystem.

Thebodysensingdeviceisusedtocapturetheuser'sbodymovementsandgestures.Thedevicecanbeacamera,amotionsensor,orawearabledevice.Thedevicesendsthecaptureddatatothegameengine.

Thegameengineisresponsibleforprocessingthedatasentbythebodysensingdeviceandtranslatingitintogameactions.Thegameenginealsocontrolsthegamelogicandgamemechanics.Thegameenginecommunicateswiththelearningmanagementsystemtorecordtheuser'slearningprogressandsendfeedbacktotheuser.

Thelearningmanagementsystemisresponsibleformanagingtheuser'slearningprogressandprovidingfeedbacktotheuser.Thelearningmanagementsystemcommunicateswiththegameenginetoreceivetheuser'slearningprogressdataandsendsfeedbacktotheuser.

GameScenes

Thegamescenesoftheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnologyshouldbedesignedtoprovideanimmersiveandengaginggameexperience.Thegamescenesshouldberelatedtothelearningcontentandtheuser'sbodymovement.Forexample,ifthelearningcontentisaboutgeography,thegamescenescanbedesignedtosimulatedifferentenvironmentsaroundtheworld,andtheuser'sbodymovementcancontrolthemovementoftheavatarinthegame.

GameMechanics

Thegamemechanicsoftheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnologyshouldbedesignedtoberelatedtothelearningcontentandtheuser'sbodymovement.Thegamemechanicsshouldbeinterestingandchallenging,butnottoodifficult,tomaintaintheuser'smotivationandengagement.Thegamemechanicscanbedesignedtosimulatereal-worldsituations,suchasproblem-solving,decision-making,andcriticalthinking.

GameLogics

Thegamelogicsoftheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnologyshouldbedesignedtoberelatedtothelearningcontentandtheuser'sbodymovement.Thegamelogicsshouldbedesignedtoprovideimmediatefeedbacktotheuser,suchasascoreoraperformanceevaluation.Thegamelogicsshouldalsosupportadaptivelearning,wherethegameadjuststhedifficultylevelaccordingtotheuser'slearningprogress.

UserStudy

Toevaluatetheeffectivenessoftheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnology,weconductedauserstudywith50primaryschoolstudentsaged9to12.Theparticipantswererandomlyassignedtotwogroups:theexperimentalgroupandthecontrolgroup.Theexperimentalgroupusedtheeducationalgamebasedonbodysensinginteractiontechnology,whilethecontrolgroupusedthetraditionaleducationalgame.

Beforethestudy,wetestedbothgroups'learningperformanceonthelearningcontentofthegame.Afterthestudy,wetestedbothgroups'learningperformanceagainandcollectedtheirfeedbackonthegameexperience.Thelearningperformancewasmeasuredbythepost-testscoresandthefeedbackwascollectedthroughaquestionnaire.

Theresultsshowedthattheexperimentalgroup'slearningperformancewassignificantlyhigherthanthecontrolgroup,asshowninTable1.Theexperimentalgroupalsoreportedahigherlevelofengagementandmotivationinlearningthanthecontrolgroup,asshowninTable2.
