1950s,

the

Egyptian

governmentwanted

to

buildanewdamacrosstheNileinorder

floods,

water

the

government

turned

to

the

UnitedNations

for

help

in

1959.

AcommitteewasestablishedtolimitdamagetotheEgyptian

buildings

and

prevent

the

loss

ofcultural

relics.

Thegroupaskedforcontributionsfromdifferentdepartments

and

raised

funds

within

the

international

community.

Expertsinvestigatedtheissue,conductedseveraltests,andthen

made

aproposal

for

how

the

building

could

be

saved.

Finally,

adocumentwassigned,andtheworkbeganin1960.

Theprojectbroughttogethergovernmentsandenvironmentalistsfrom

around

theworld.

Temples

and

other

culturalsitesweretakendownpiecebypiece,andthen

moved

andput

back

together

again

in

a

place

where

they

were

safe

fromthewater.In

1961,Germanengineersmovedthefirsttemple.

Over

the

next

20

years,

thousands

ofengineers

andworkersrescued22templesandcountlesscultural

relics.Fifty

countries

donated

nearly

$80

million

to

the

project.Whentheprojectendedin

1980,itwasconsidereda

great

success.

Not

only

had

the

countries

found

a

path

to

thefuturethatdidnotrunovertherelics

of

the

past,

but

they

had

also

learnt

that

it

was

possible

for

countries

to
