Criticism from coaches, parents, and other teammates, as well as pressure to win can create an excessive amount of anxiety or stress for young athletes. Stress can be physical, emotional, or psychological and research has indicated that it can lead to burnout. Burnout has been described as dropping or quitting of an activity that was at one time enjoyable. The early years of development are critical years for learning about oneself. The sport setting is one where valuable experiences can take place. Young athletes can, for example, learn how to cooperate with others, make friends, and gain other social skills that will be used throughout their lives. Coaches and parents should be aware, at all times, that their feedback to youngsters can greatly affect their children. Youngsters may take their parents and coaches criticisms to heart and find a flaw(缺陷)in themselves.Coaches and parents should also be cautious that youth sport participation does not become work for children. The outcome of the game should not be more important than the process of learning the sport and other life lessons. In todays youth sport setting, young athletes may be worrying more about who will win instead of enjoying themselves and the sport. Following a game, many parents and coaches focus on the outcome and find fault with youngsters performances. Positive reinforcement should be provided regardless of the outcome. Research indicates that positive reinforcement motivates and has a greater effect on learning than criticism. Again, criticism can create high levels of stress, which can lead to burnout.1An effective way to prevent the burnout of young athletes is to_.Areduce their mental stressBincrease their sense of successCmake sports less competitiveDmake sports more challenging答案:A细节理解题。 2According to the passage, sport is positive for young people in that_.Ait can help them learn more about societyBit enables them to find flaws in themselvesCit can provide them with valuable experiencesDit teaches them how to set realistic goals for themselves答案:C推理判断题。 3Many coaches and parents are in the habit of criticizing young athletes_.Abelieving that criticism is beneficial for their early developmentBwithout realizing criticism may destroy their selfconfidenceCin order to make them remember lifes lessonsDso as to put more pressure on them答案:B推理判断题。 4The authors purpose in writing the passage is to_.Ateach young athletes how to avoid burnoutBpersuade young children not to worry about criticismCstress the importance of positive reinforcement(支持;支援)to childrenDdiscuss the skill of combining criticism with encouragement答案:C主旨大意题。 BPeople believe that climbing can do good to health. Where can you learn the skill of climbing then? If you think that you have to go to the mountains to learn how to climb, youre wrong. Many Americans are learning to climb in city gyms(体育馆). Here, people are learning on climbing. The climbing wall goes straight up and small holding places for hands and feet. How do people climb the wall? To climb, you need special shoes and safetybelt(保护带)around your chest to hold you. There are ropes(绳索)tied to your harness. The ropes hold you in place so that you dont fall. A beginners wall is usually about 15 feet high, and you climb straight up. There are small pieces of metal that stick out for you to stand on and hold on to. Sometimes its easy to see the new piece of metal. Sometimes, its not. The most difficult is to control your fear. Its normal for humans to be afraid of falling, so its difficult not to feel fear. But when you move away from the wall, the harness and the ropes hold you, and you begin to feel safe. You move slowly until you reach the top.Climbing attracts people because its good exercise for almost everyone. You use your whole body, especially your arms and legs. This sport gives your body a complete workout. When you climb, both your mind and your body can become stronger. 5What can we infer from the passage?APeople are fairly interested in climbing nowadays.BIt is impossible to build up ones body by climbing.CPeople can only learn the skill of climbing outdoors.DIt is always easy to see holding places in climbing. D项错误,依据为第二段中“sometimes its easy to see the new pieces of metal. Sometimes its not.” 6The most difficult thing to do in wall climbing is_.Ato tie ropes to your harnessBto control your fearCto move away from the wallDto climb straight up答案:B细节推断题。由第二段第九句中的“The most difficult.so its difficult not to feel fear.” 7The word “workout” underlined in the last paragraph most probably means_.AsettlementBexerciseCexcitementDtiredness答案:B词义猜测题。 8Why does the author write this passage?ATo tell people where to find gyms.BTo prove the basic need for climbing.CTo encourage people to climb mountains.Dintroduce the sport of wall climbing. For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans. _1_Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today. After the gold rush of 1849, Strauss decided to move to the West to seek his fortunes. Strauss did not want to be a person who searched an area for minerals. Instead, he knew he could make a good living by selling supplies to the miners. At first, he planned to sell sewing supplies and cloth. _3_When he heard miners complaining that their clothes were easily broken or they usually tore their pockets during mining, he decided to use a special fabric to make pants for the miners. These pants proved so popular that he quickly ran out of materials to make more.In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets(铆钉).
