Unit 4 The first underground in the worldReading 1Teaching aims: After this class, students will be able to:1. get some information about the first underground in the world;2. know how to get general idea of each paragraph with the help of some key words;3. know how to read tourist brochure;4. use what they have learned to talk about the things around themselves. Teaching procedures: Step 1: Lead-in(1) Begin the class by asking students “If you want to get some information about the place where you want to go, what can you do?” Show the picture of a tourist brochure and ask students what a brochure is used for. (ppt.4)(2) Help students to list information they will get from the brochure of the first underground in the world. (ppt.5) Step 2: SkimmingAllow students two or three minutes to read the first or the last sentence of each paragraph, and then summarize the main idea of each part with the guidance shown on the screen. At the same time, ask students to pick out some key words which can help them summarize the main idea. (ppt.6)Step 3: Scanning1. Ask students to read the first paragraph, and help them to analyze the reasons for the development of the first underground in the world. (ppt.7)2. Help students get the information of how the underground developed by filling in the diagram. (ppt.8-9)3. Ask students to answer the following questions so that they can get some details about Charles Yerkes (ppt.10)Who made great contributions to improving the system?Charles YerkesWhat did he do?
