quality of a website in the blink of an eye(眨眼的功夫),a study shows.Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a 20th of a second of viewing a webpage. They were surprised as they believed it would take at least 10 times longer to form an opinion. The study also suggests that first impressions have a lasting effect. The Canadian team showed volunteers glimpses of websites, lasting for only 50 milliseconds. The volunteers then had to assess the websites in terms of their aesthetic appeal(美学吸引力).The researchers found that the quickly formed conclusions closely matched up to opinions of the websites that had been made after much longer periods of examination.Gitte Lindgaard, lead researcher of the study expressed her surprise at the results.“We believed it would be impossible to really see anything in less than 500 milliseconds,” she said. The judgments were being formed almost as quickly as the eye can take in information. The researchers believe that these quickly formed first impressions last because of what is known to psychologists as the “halo effect(光圈效应)”.If people believe a website looks good, then this positive quality will spread to other areas, such as the websites content.Since people like to be right, they will continue to use the website that made a good first impression,as this will further confirm that their first decision was a good one.As websites increasingly compete for business,Dr Lindgaard added that companies should take note.“Unless the first impression is favourable, visitors will be out of your site before they even know that you might be offering more than your competitors,” she warned.1.How long did the researchers expect it would take to form an opinion about a webpage?A.At least 0.005 seconds.B.At least 0.5 seconds.C.At least 2.5 seconds.D.At least 1 second. 根据文章第二段中“Researchers found that the brain makes decisions in just a 20th of a second of viewing a webpage.” B2.The volunteers drew conclusions from the websites .A.wordsB.picturesC.appearancesD.subjects提示:推理判断题。 再结合第八段中“If people believe a website looks good, then this positive quality will spread to other areas, such as the websites content.” C3.According to the Canadian researchers,.A.first impressions have a lasting effect B.it took a shorter time for volunteers to draw conclusionsC.the conclusions from long periods of examination were less accurateD.the “halo effect” leads to websites increasingly competing for business提示:推理判断题。 A4.According to Gitte Lindgaard,.A.we cant really see anything in a short timeB.we cant draw a conclusion in a short timeC.the content of websites is of little importance to their competitivenessD.the first impression is very important to websites competitiveness提示:推理判断题。 DBThe meaning of the word “volunteer” may be a little different in different countries, but it usually means “one who offers his or her services”.There are many different ways in which people can volunteer, such as taking care of sick people, working in homes for homeless children, and picking up garbage from beaches and parks.Volunteers may work within their own countries or in other countries. They are often people with a strong wish to help those who are less fortunate than themselves.Volunteers dont expect any kind of pay.At the root of volunteering is the idea that one person may have the ability to offer services that can help other people.Tracy,a good friend of mine, however, recently came back from India with a new idea of what being a volunteer means. She worked for two and a half weeks in one of Mother Teresas homes in Calcutta. The following is her story.“I first heard about Mother Teresa in my high school. We watched a video about her work in India and all over the world.I was so moved by her spirit to help others and her endless love for every human being that after I graduated from high school,I too wanted to try her kind of work.So with two friends I flew to Calcutta for a few weeks.”“I was asked to work in a home for sick people.I helped wash clothes and sheets, and pass out lunch.I also fed the people who were too weak to feed themselves and tried to cheer them up.I felt it was better to share with them than to think that I have helped them.To be honest,I dont think I was helping very much.It was then that I realized that I had not really come to help, but to learn about and experience another culture that helped improve my own understanding of life and the world.”5.According to the passage,a volunteer refers to a person who .A.is willing to help those in need without payB.can afford to travel to different placesC.has a strong wish to be successfulD.has made a big fortune in life提示:细节理解题。根据第一段的“.one who offers his or her services.”及“Volunteers dont expect any kind of pay.” 答案:A6.Tracy started her work as a
