The ventricular atrium, at this level, remains stable in size throughout the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. 10.1 The normal ventricular atrium has a mean diameter between 6 and 7 mm. A measurement of 10 mm is 4 standard deviations above the mean(3) and is considered the cutoff between normal and abnormal size of the ventricular atrium(2,3) (Fig. 10-1A-B, Fig. 10-1C, and Fig. 10-2 ). More recently, Alagappan and associates studied a larger population of 500 normal fetuses and found the mean value for the downside ventricular atrium to be 6.6 mm. The standard deviation in this study population was larger, however, at 1.4 mm.
