By the end of the week I was in the hospital, unconscious and on complete life support with doctors and nurses working round the clock trying to save my life. Three days into my ICU stay my family was told to ;hope for the best but prepare for the worst. I lost two weeks of my life in unconsciousness. When I woke up, I discovered the severe fluhad left fluid on my brain and the only thing I could move were my eyes. It is the most terrifying feeling to be trapped in your body, unable to communicate, move and breathe on your own. After four weeks in the ICU recovering and learning to breathe and swallow again, I spent five more weeks in the hospital gradually learning to move and walk again. All told., I spent several months in hospitals, had six operations, one of which requiredopening my chest, and worst of all I missed out on hundreds of important moments in myhusband and three boys lives. Something once lost can never be regained.C As the days get shorter and the chilly weather rolls in, we all want to curl up in a blanker and hibernate(避寒) until spring rolls around. But making time to get outside in the sun, even when its cold out, could have bigger mental benefits than you might realize. While the link between sunshine and mental health is nothing new, new research from Brigham Young University ( BYU) has shown that the association may be even stronger thanpreviously realized. It finds that sunlight exposure is by- far the greatest weather-related factor determining mental health outcomes. In other words: more sunshine, more happiness. For the study, a psychologist, a physicist and a statistician from BYU teamed up to compare daily environmental data from the university s Physics and Astronomy Weather Station with emotional health data archived(存档) by day for 16,452 adult therapy patients who were being treated at the BYU Counseling and Psychological Services Center. Exposure to sunlight is a significant factor in seasonal affective disorder. Research has shown that the brain produces more of the feel-good neurotransmitter serotonin on sunny days than it does on darker days. What s more, lack of sunlight is linked with lower vitamin D levels, which in turn has been related to depression and low energy. If you re getting enough sunlight, your emotions should remain relatively stable, the researchers found. But as the amount of sunlight in the day is reduced, levels of emotional paincan soar. Other weather variables including temperature, pollution and rain were not found to have an impact on mental health. “We were surprised that many of the weather and pollution variables we included in the study were not significantly related to clients scores on the emotional pain measure once we had accounted for suntime ,” said Dr. Mark Beecher, a professor of psychology at the university andthe study s lead author. People tend to associate rainy days, pollution, and other meteorological phenomena with sadness or depression, but we did not find that. 28. Lower vitamin D levels are helpful in keeping us energetic.B. Some research findings are inconsistent with the popular belief.C. The more sunshine we get, the more excited we are likely to feel.D. The link between sunshine and mental health was unknown before. D Advertisers often use humor to attract customers attention, but they should do so with caution, according to a recently published. study. Ads that make people laugh are not always in the best interest of brands, researchers found. Humor may way work to advertisers benefit only when it s just right. In the study, Caleb Warren, assistant professor of marketing in the University of Arizona, showed participants ads for three T-shirts designed for a young girl. One ad featured a plain, non-humorous, red T-shirt. One featured the same shirt with a funny face on it. And one featured a red T-shirt with two tassels (流苏装饰) on the chest. When surveyed, study participants said they found the smiley-face shirt and the tasseled shirt equally funny, but they had more negative feelings toward the ad featuring the inappropriate, tasseled shirt. What we show in this paper is that advertisements that are equally funny can have opposite effects on brand attitudes, Warren said. One can be persuasive and help the brand, and another can be counterproductive (产生不良后果的) and hurt the brand. So, how do you strike the right balance? Warren suggest advertisers ask themselves a series of key questions before attempting humor. The first: Is the humor attempt funny? If you try to be funny and fail, it almost always hurts the brand, Warren said, adding that audience testing before launching an ad is a good idea to assess whether something will be considered as funny. Other questions to consider: Does the ad create humor in a way that seems too threatening? Will the ad create humor in a way that also motivates avoidance? Whats the context for the humor attempt?“ Marketers are always asking themselves,Should I use humor? and really they need to be thinking about how to create the humor, Warren said. In general, the more a consumer likes a brand and the more positive their attitude is toward it, the more likely they are to purchase it or use it.”32. What do researchers find about advertisements? A. Once used properly, humor can promote sales. B. Humor should be used as much as possible in ads. C. Laughter-causing ads are sure to do good to brands. D. Advertisers usually try to avoid using humor in ads,33. What can we know from Paragraph 2? A. How the study is carried out. B. The reason for doing the study. C. The influence of the study. D. Why T-shirts are used in the study.34. Which of the following reflects Warrens opinion? A. The effects of jokes on advertisements dont vary greatly. B. There is no need for ads to have audience testing in advance. C. Peoples attitudes toward brands dont influence purchasing decisions. D. Its necessary for marketers to consider the way of making ads humorous.35. What can be the best title for the text? A. How to Bring More Fun into Ads B. Funny Ads May Not Be Effective C.
