BMany years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming. Last week I received a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her son from killing himself. In closing she called me a hero. That got me thinking about what a hero is. Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car? If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someones life?Today I looked up the word “hero” in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read “a person who does something brave” and also “a person who is good and noble”.That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very important. And I remembered what happened to me years ago. After my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition. I was within hours trying to get enough courage to end the pain. When I returned home, someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it, saved a life and became a hero. The many stories I kept writing in the following years saved the life of a teenage boy. In turn that makes the person who sent me the card a double hero. I suppose that is why I fight so hard to help the children now living in orphanages (孤儿院). Most children come out of these places with a very hard attitude to the world. The gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. Hopefully, most of them will never hurt anyone because of the kindness shown to them by those of us who care. If it works, we will also become heroes.25. Why did the woman call the writer a hero at the end of the call?A. Because he asked her son not to kill himself.B. Because he saved a family from a burning car.C. Because his story saved her sons life. D. Because he was cute and kind to everybody.26. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?A. The wonderful card the writer received.B. The fact that the sender helped the writer.C. The action of sending the card.D. The fact that the sender was a friend of the writer.27. The main idea of the passage is _.A. why the writer should be a hero B. that everyone is a heroC. whether the writer is a hero D. what a hero exactly isCAre you sometimes a little tired and sleepy in the early afternoon? Many people feel this way after lunch. They may think that eating lunch is the cause of the sleepiness. Or, in summer, they may think it is the heat. However, the real reason lies inside their bodies. At that timeabout eight hours after you wake up-your body temperature goes down. This is what makes you slow down and feel sleepy. Scientists have tested sleep habits in experiments where there was no night or day. The people in these experiments almost always followed a similar sleeping pattern (模式). They slept for one long period and then for one short period about eight hours later. In many parts of the world, people take naps (小睡) in the middle of the day. This is especially true in warmer climates, where the heat makes work difficult in the early afternoon. Researchers are now saying that naps are good for everyone in any climate. A daily nap gives one a more rested body and mind and therefore is good for health in general. In countries where naps are traditional, people often suffer less from problem such as heart disease. Many working people, unfortunately, have no time to take naps. Though doctors may advise taking naps, employers do not allow it! If you do have the chance, however, here are a few tips about making the most of your nap. Remember that the best time to take a nap is about eight hours after you get up. A short sleep too late in the day may only make you feel more tired and sleepy afterwards. This can also happen if you sleep for too long. If you do not have enough time, try a short nap-even ten minutes of sleep can be helpful.28. Why do you sometimes feel sleepy in the early afternoon?A. Because you eat too much for lunch.B. Because its very hot in summer.C. Because your body temperature drops at that time.D. Because you didnt have a good sleep last night.29. Which of the following about “naps” is correct?A. All the people in warmer climates take naps in the middle of the day.B. Taking naps regularly is helpful to peoples health.C. If you take naps every day, you will never get heart disease.D. Doctors need to take naps while employers dont.30. If you get up at 7:30 am, what is the best time for you to take a nap?A. About 12:30 pm.B. About 1:30 pm.C. About 2:30 pm D. About 3:30 pm31. What would be the best title for the text?A. All for a NapB. Just for a RestC. A Special Sleep PatternD. Taking Naps in Warmer ClimateD The more we learn about the octopus, the more intelligent we discover they are. Octopuses have not one but nine “brains”, one in each of their legs and a central brain behind the eyes. Octopuses can solve problems, can be trained to learn behavior and are fairly good at working out how to get out of an aquarium (水族馆) and get into food. We can learn a lot from an octopus. An octopus doesnt have a backbone, which doesnt mean that they lack nerve. On the contrary, their nervous system, which goes all the way down each leg, is very complex. They are able to take in a lot of information about their world and seem to be able to remember, learn and adapt to new situations. The suckers (吸盘) on their long legs can not only feel, but also taste. Each sucker works individually, so an octopus can just focus on one leg or one sucker. Their eyesight is sharp. Although their brains are quite small in comparison to ours, they still have very large brains for invertebrates (无脊椎动物). They have many physical characteristics of a human brain.Perhaps youve seen the video of an octopus in a German aquarium that learned to open a jar to get its food. Octopuses have also been taught to go through mazes (迷宫) and to pick out different shapes of patterns. Their short term and long term memory seem to be excellent. It is thought that octopuses are as intelligent as dogs in their ability to learn certain behavior, solve problems, and make use of objects. In the movie “Octopus Intelligence: Deep Sea Aliens,” some species of octopuses are letting young octopuses watch the adults in order to train them. If this keeps up, in a hundred thousand generations the octopus may rule the seas. Clearly, there is more to an octopus than just a lot of legs.32. We can learn from the passage that the octopus _.A. is the cleverest animal in the worldB. has nine small brains and a big oneC. has a very complex nervous systemD. has all its brains behind its eyes33. Which of the following statements about the suckers of the octopus is true?A. Each one can work by itself.B. They can taste but cant feel.C. Each leg has only one sucker.D. What could go wrong? Plenty. In addition to providing electricity, phone charging cords(线)can send and receive data. That free USB charging hub(集线器)at an airport, hotel or other public place may not only charge your phone. 37 The USB charging hub could be connecting to your phone and copy your contact list, email and text messages, voice mails, photographs and videos. It can also copy passwords, banking information and any other information stored on your phone. If you want to charge your phone while traveling, you have other choices that do not increase your risks. Connect your phone only to electrical outlets(插座)so data transfer is not possible. 38 It is better to use a distant wall outlet than a nearby USB charging hub. Carry an extra, fully-charged battery. Having one means you can charge your phone without having to worry about finding a power outlet. 39 If you must use a public USB charging center, be sure to turn off your phone. 40 But it will reduce the chances of it happening, depending on what phone you have.A. Remember to fully charge your phone before you leave home or work.B. It also could be transferring information to and from your phone.C.
