In his life, Frost won four Pulitzer Prizes for his worksmore than any other poet in American history. His most famous poems include “The Road Not Taken”“Fire and Ice” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”. Though he is widely read, Frost is also one of the most misunderstood writers in the United States for the complexity of his poems.Though born in California, Frost was brought up in New England, where he is inseparably linked. After dropping out of Dartmouth College to seek his literary dream, he remained upset for years, producing collections of works but failing to get enough of them published to make his efforts financially worthwhile. Finally, Frost left the United States in 1912 to see whether his work might be better received in London. It was, and in 1913 his first full collection was published in Great Britain. Fellow American poet Amy Lowell adored Frosts work and brought it back to the United States, publicizing it insistently. Soon afterwards Frosts collections became bestsellers, and he a famous figure. From then on, Frost was on his way to the lifelong respect and recognition for his achievements in poetry. In 1961, he was invited to read a poem for the presidential inauguration (总统就职典礼)of John F.Kennedy. He recited his poem, “The Gift Outright” from memory at the ceremony. This was perhaps his last poetry reading in front of a wide national audience before his death in 1963. More importantly, Frost became the first poet to read a poem at a presidential inauguration.语篇导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了美国伟大的诗人Robert Frost的文学生涯。21.What makes Frost “the statesman of American letters”?A.The comments of other writers.B.His literary achievements.C.The complexity of his poems.D.His political activities.解析:B 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“a rare national poet who was read and respected by both university professors and everyday citizensin American history”可知,他的文学成就很高。故选B项。22.What do we know about Frost before 1912?A. Find out in Little Brother by American author Cory Doctorow. It is a fascinating book for a new generation of scifi readers.Marcus Yallow, 17, from San Francisco is much more comfortable in front of a computer than obeying the rules of society. Smart, fast and wise to the ways of the networked world, he has no trouble outwitting (骗过) his high schools monitoring system. This way he and his friends get to head off to play a popular online game in real life. While they are playing, a bomb explodes on the Bay Bridge. Marcus stops a military vehicle to get help for his injured friend, but this simple act throws him into a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) secret prison. There he is treated as a possible terrorist. He is eventually let go after four days, but his injured friend disappears. When he returns, Marcus discovers that there are many “security measures” in place and that now all citizens are treated like potential terrorists. While some consider this government action necessary for public safety, Marcus sees this as a complete destruction of the rights he is supposed to have as a citizen. He knows that no one will believe his story, which leaves him with only one thing to do: to take down the DHS himself. He helps organize a large network called Xnet to spread the truth, anonymously (匿名地).The book presents a young man who is irresponsible, but learns about himself, and grows, in the course of the story. As part of this learning and growing he becomes aware of very serious issues about his society.语篇导读:本文是一篇书评。对一个孩子来说,当他眼里的世界突然发生改变时,对他来说意味着什么?本文详细介绍了很受科幻读者欢迎的由美国作家Cory Doctorow所写的Little Brother这本书。24.What kind of article does this passage belong to? Their bodies have many cells(细胞) and look like small umbrellas with legs, but they are animals. The most exciting thing about these animals, say the scientists, is that they seem to live without oxygen(氧). What scientists have known about life so far is that only singlecelled living things can live in places that have no oxygen. These newlyfound animals could change that idea. These animals live in a place where the water is so salty that it cant mix with the seawater above it. Usually seawater has oxygen in itwhich allows animals like fish to livebut the salty waters where they live dont have oxygen. During three experiments in 1998, 2005 and 2008, scientists found many such small animals at the bottom(底部) of the Mediterranean Sea.Finding animals down there was so surprising that some scientists couldnt believe it. Some scientists thought it was just a joke. To find out whether the animals could actually live without oxygen, scientists took up some of these animals from the ocean floor. They placed them in small bottles which have no oxygen inside. To their surprise, these animals appeared to be still alive there after a long time. When the researchers did more tests, they found that some of the animals had eggswhich suggested they even could give birth to their young without oxygen. Finally, scientists found that the insides of the animals appear to be used to living in an environment that has no oxygen. Now scientists are doing more experiments about these small animals. And if theyre right, they will need to rethink what they know about where animals live.语篇导读:科学家在海洋深处的无氧环境中发现了生物。28. Family members, friends and strangers can be hurt by a simple mistake; their lives can be overturned(倾覆) completely. Before I participated in the Thumb Wars campaign, I used to put sticky(粘的) notes inside my car to advise any person that was within it not to text while driving. I posted a quote on my social pages that said, “Drive now text later.” The message especially caught my dads attention. Since he is on the road about three out of the seven days of the week, we are all worried about his safety. He decided to never use his phone while driving. When it comes to informing other people about the dangers of texting while driving, I usually bring up conversations about driving which then lead me to lecture them on why they shouldnt text while driving. Thumb Wars has given me a new way and opportunity to prevent people from texting while driving. The era we live in today is all about technology, and there is always the urge to text. Thumb Wars is an inspirational campaign that fights against that. What I was trying to achieve was to not only change my life, but also try to influence the lives of others for the better. I believe that I can make people realize the consequences of texting while driving. They all know that it is not worth it and could change someones life instantly. I
