And there in the stable, while all of the other horses ate grass, I remember drinking my mothers milk.Usually, in the morning and afternoon, I would run with my mother or play with other young horses in the field. Sometimes, this play became too dangerous and my mother would come and take me away. The farmer was a good horse owner. He took good care of us all, but he seemed to prefer my mother to the other horses. And because I was her baby, he started to like me as well. Pretty soon I was eating grass like all of the other horses. Because I no longer needed her milk, and because she was his favorite horse, the farmer quickly put my mother back to work, pulling his carriage to and from the market, always coming back in the early evening. One evening I was playing with the other horses when my mother called me over to her. She told me that she never again wanted to see me playing so roughly with the others. I must grow up to be as wonderful as my ancestors, always working hard, walking proudly, and never hurting others. I promised her that I would do as she said. However, I had to admit that it was sometimes difficult to be kind to people like Dick, the worker-boy. He was always throwing rocks at us when he should have been picking fruit. We had to run around trying to avoid the rocks. Luckily, one day the farmer caught Dick behaving this way. The boy was given some money and then left the farm. That was the last time we ever saw the boy.21. Why would my mother come and take me away? A. She might think that I would get hurt B. It was time for me to drink her milk C. I didnt want to be a horse as my mother hoped B. The boy was fired because of his bad behavior C. My mother didnt want me to play with others D. The farmer didnt need the boy to help him24. Which of the following can be the best title? A. Life on a happy farm B. A story of a strict mother C. The growth of a young horse D. Relationship between horses BHispanic Heritage Month(拉丁文化月)is the period when people recognize the contributions(贡献) of Hispanic Americans to the United States and celebrate Hispanic culture. Hispanic Heritage Week was approved by President Lyndon Johnson in 1968 and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. The law came into force on August 17, 1988. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. They all declared independence in 1821. In addition, Mexico, Chile and Belize celebrate their independence days on September 16, September 17 and September 18. Hispanic Heritage Month also celebrates the long and important presence of Hispanic Americans in North America. A map of late 18th century North America shows this presence, from San Francisco to Florida. Spanish explorers traveled further north along the Pacific Coast to Canada in 1774 and by the late 18th century they had established a military post on Vancouver Island, 350 miles north of Seattle. The Spanish sailed up the Atlantic Coast through the Chesapeake Bay in 1526, then called the Bahia de Santa Maria, about 80 years before the romanticized English encounter with Pocahontas. In the 1520s Spanish navigators also explored as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the present site of Bangor, Maine. The Spanish settled in the southwest of North America in the 16th century and officially founded Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1610. About 47 million people in the United States are Hispanic Americans. Their families come from countries where people speak Spanish. Here are some ways you can take part in this special month. Move Your FeetMusic is a big part of Hispanic life. People dont just listen. Wrap It UpThe tortilla is a popular food. It is a type of flat bread. It is often filled with meat, beans, tomatoes and cheese. Then it is wrapped up and eaten. Yum! CWhy is pink or purple a color for girls and blue or brown for boys? The answer depends largely on cultural values as well as personal experiences.
