She worried particularly about the lack of jobs and cultural differences and the chance that I would face racism. Despite these concerns, I came to New Zealand in July 2009. I have found the place and the people very nice and supportive. Soon after I arrived, I realized the importance of getting a job to supply my living expenses.Determined to do this on my own, I spent a whole day going from door to door for a job. BKid Presidents:True Tales of Childhood from Americas PresidentsBy David Stabler, illustrated by Doogie HornerDECEMBER 19, 2015Reviewed by Kid Reporter Suraj ModiGenre (体裁):Historical non-fiction (纪实文学)Number of pages:224Whats the book about? In the 20 stories of 20 different U.S. presidents in this book, we learn that the countrys leaders are not so different from us. They, too, were once kids with ordinary problems. They struggled with schoolwork and angered their parents. Bill Clinton struggled with his weight. Barack Obama moved to Indonesia with his mother when he was just a boy, and had to get used to a new culture. How did the author make this book interesting?David Stabler tells stories with an injection of humor. He tells the unfamiliar stories of the nations leaders, uncovering the jazz stars, lifesavers, and goose-tamers among the presidents.Who would like this book? You dont have to be a fan of history to pick up this book. Those who enjoy reading about overcoming struggles, but still enjoy a good belly laugh, would like this book. Of course, if you hope to become a future leader of the world, I suggest you read this book cover to cover. On a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being best),how would you rate this book? I would rate this book a 10 out of 10 because it is a fantastic book. It has everything you could ask for: Its educational, funny, and even a little dramatic. Dont let the illustrations fool you. Personally I didnt enjoy art at school, but I did remember that we were always drawing pictures of our faces. However, I think this shows just how old the self-portrait is. The only thing that has really changed is the technology which we use to create self-portraits. We have gone from pencil to the digital camera. The digital version has now become “selfie” (a word now so popular that it is named the Oxford English Dictionary Onlines “Word of the Year”).Traditionally, the best way to take a selfie was to stand in front of a mirror. This was fine though it did look a little silly as,no matter how hard you tried, you couldnt hide the camera. Of course, phones now have cameras on both the back and the front so you dont need a mirror to guide you. The drawback (缺点) to this more modern method is that you can usually see the photographers arm in the photo. I dont really understand the attraction of the selfie. Taking a photo of yourself in the bathroom doesnt provide the best scenery (especially if you forget to put the toilet seat down, gentlemen). At famous tourist attractions, it always saddens me to see people take selfies; travelling on your own is fine, but are you so mistrustful of strangers that you cannot ask a passer-by to take the photo for you? However, there have been a lot of arguments over the selfie. Recently, one New York tourist took a selfie with a man threatening to commit suicide (自杀) on the edge of a bridge behind her; and, even more recently, Barack Obama, along with David Cameron and the Danish prime minister, Thorning Schmidt, took a “group selfie” at Nelson Mandelas funeral.28. Why is the word “selfie” named the Oxford English Dictionary Onlines “Word of the Year”?A. It can be written in pencil easily.B. It is very important in the dictionary.C. It means the development of technology.D. It is a new word used widely and popularly.29. Which of the following is the drawback to the traditional way of taking a selfie? A. There are arms in the picture.B. The camera is always in the picture. C. The picture is often not very clear.D. The mirror can hardly be avoided.30. We can learn from the last paragraph that the selfie . A. may lead to commit suicideB. may bring unlucky things to us C. is not suitable at some moments D. is popular on the edge of a bridge31. What does the author think of selfies? A. Political leaders should not take selfies. B. Selfies can prevent people committing suicide. C. It is hard to see why selfies are so appealing. D. It is necessary to take selfies while travelling alone.DResearchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things ,that the smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in drivers on roads. The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the brain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the systems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.Smell , which dictates the unbelievable complexity of food tastes ,has always been the least understood of our senses. Our nose are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and taste this extremely large range ofsmells is controlled by something like 1,000 genes (基因),which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome (基因组). Researchers Richard Axe. and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. These two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1 , 000 olfactory(嗅觉)genes and to explain how our olfactory system works.According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to make drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry and therefore desperate to satisfy their appetites. In contrast, the Smells of peppermint (胡椒薄荷)and cinnamon (桂皮)were shown to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers impatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeared to promote clean thinking and mental focus. However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least 50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people and not in others. They believe this may explain why some of us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Israel researchers say their study shows that nearly every human being shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors (感觉器官).32.What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?A. The category of food smells. B. The logical part of human brain.C. The nature of human olfactory system. D. The relationship between food and feelings.33.Which of the following can help people concentrate?A. Bread. B. Fruits C. Coffee D. Fast food34.What do we know from the last paragraph?A. Some people can recognize up to 50 smells.B. Every person has a different pattern of genes.C. There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.D. Different people are sensitive to different smells.35.What is the passage mainly about?A, Logic and behavior. B. Smell and its influenceC. Sense ability and food tastes. D.
