The island is a place of natural beauty and has more than 2,000 km of walking tracks and 18 national parks. If you go on a tour, youll discover a wild and beautiful place where the people are friendly and the food is delicious. If you dont like walking, there are other tours you can choose from including a river cruise and cycling. You can also combine your tour with fishing, sailing or sunbathing on the beach. One of the most incredible places to walk is along the Tarkine coast which is located in the north-west of Tasmania. Its such a wild and remote area that you can easily complete your walk without seeing anyone apart from the members of your group and your two guides. The area contains the largest temperate rainforest in Australia which is home to more than 50 endangered species. It is also home to many Aboriginal Heritage Sites. Your guides will provide you with plenty of information about the area as you complete that part of your tour. During your tour, youll come across rivers, mountain ranges, spectacular waterfalls, wildlife and long wild beaches. It will be an experience you wont easily forget.Tour Itinerary:Day 1: Youre picked up from your hotel in the town of Launceston and driven to the Tarkine. You then complete a three-hour walk through the forest before arriving at your camp at Mystery Creek. There you will enjoy a delicious meal cooked by your guides.Day 2: After breakfast, you continue deeper into the rainforest, passing some of the tallest trees in the world as you go, and stopping for lunch and then camp in the evening.Day 3: The highlight of todays trek is the Tarkine Falls, a beautiful 15-metre waterfall.Day 4: Today you can stay at the camp and bathe in the Tarkine Falls, or you can go for a day trek for more fantastic views of the forest.Day 5: After a last trek through the forest, you are picked up at about 4:00 p.m. and you arrive in Launceston at around 7:00 p.m. The tour includes two professional guides, transport to and from the rainforest, all food while on the tours and all safety equipment. You should buy or hire recommended camping equipment including: backpacks, sleeping bags, sleep mats, head torches, rain coats and trousers.56. A tourist to the island can _. A. cycle along the Tarkine coast and through the forest B. buy or hire as much camping equipment as possible. C. go for a day trek for more fantastic views on Day 5 D. choose to make a sailing tour of the place for pleasure57. From the passage we know that _. A. people will walk hours in all the five days during the tour B. many species in danger are protected in the national parks C. it takes about three hours to drive from Launceston to Tarkine D. the tour provides guides, accommodation and safety equipmentB Scientists recently found three animal species living two miles below the surface of the Mediterranean Sea, where the super-salty waters dont have oxygen(氧). Theyre multicellular (多细胞的), which means their bodies have many cells. They each are as small as a large grain of sand. But they are animals. The most exciting thing about these creatures, say the scientists, is that they obviously dont need oxygen to live. What biologists know about life so far is that only single-celled living things can live in places that have no oxygen, and that multicellular organisms (有机物) can visit these places, but not live there. These newly found creatures could change that idea. Finding animals down there was so surprising that the scientists couldnt believe it. At first, “we thought they were dead bodies,” Roberto Danovaro, a scientist at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona, Italy, told Science News. To find out whether the animals could actually live there Danovaro and his colleagues brought up more samples (样本) from the ocean floor. Studying the animals in the new samples showed that they appeared to be alive. The researchers did more tests, and found that some of the animals had eggswhich suggests they were reproducing (繁殖). Also in the samples were old skins, suggesting that the animals had lived there long enough to grow. Finally, pictures taken showed that the insides of the animals appear to be adapted to live in an environment that has no oxygen. These clues suggest the animals dont need oxygen, but the evidence (证据) is indirect, which means that scientists still have not observed how the animals live without oxygen. This means more studies are needed, but the scientists think theyre on the right track. And if theyre right, biologists will need to rethink what they know about where animals live.58. What excited the scientists most is that _. A. they found three animal species visit the salty water under the Mediterranean Sea B. single-celled animals can live in super-salty waters C. the tiny animals have many cells D. three kinds of animals can live in places that have no oxygen59. Which of the following CANT be used to prove the newly found creatures can live in super-salty waters? A. Their dead bodies are found there. B. Some in the samples have eggs. C. Some old skins are found in the samples. D. The pictures of their insides have been taken.60. More studies are needed to prove _. A. where single-celled animals can live B. how the newly found animals live without oxygen C. whether the multicellular creatures can live underwater D. why the supper-salty waters have no oxygenC I want to talk about the economy. Not “the economy” we hear about endlessly in the news each day and in politicians speeches. I want to talk about the real economy, the one we live in day by day. Most people arent particularly interested in “the economy”. “Share prices are flying high; interest rates are soaring; the Dow Jones Index closed sixty-three points down on 8472.35.” We hear this and subconsciously switch off. Notice that “the economy” is not the same as the economy, “The economy” is what men in suits play with to make vast personal wealth. The economy is where the rest of us live on a daily basis, earning our living, paying our taxes, and purchasing the necessities of life. We are supposed to be benefiting from all the advantages of a well-off society. So why do we feel tired and stressed? We have no time for anything other than work, which is ridiculous given the number of labor-saving devices in our lives. Our towns become more and more crowded. We poison our air and seas, and our food is full of chemicals. Theres something wrong here. If times were truly good, then you may think wed all feel optimistic about the future. Yet the majority of us are deeply worried. More than 90 percent of us think we are too concerned about ourselves and not concerned enough about future generations. The term “economic expansion” suggests something desirable, but expansion simply means spending more money. More spending doesnt mean that life is getting better. We all know it often means the opposite-greed, crime, poverty, pollution. More spending merely feeds our whole economic system, which is based on production and consumption. Unless money keeps circulating, the economy breaks down. If we dont keep consuming, the whole system goes into stalemate (僵局). How do we break the cycle and make some changes? We need to become far more aware of the results of our actions. We buy clothes that are made in sweat shops by virtual slaves in poor parts of the world. We create mountains of waste. We demand cheap food, mindless of the fact that it totally lacks taste and is produced using chemicals that poison the land. The consumption culture makes us unaware of the effect of our own behavior. Our main problem is not that we dont know what to do about it. It is gathering the desire to do it.61.
