Unit 3 The world of colours and light Last year I had a fantastic trip to Europe with my parents. In the city of Mlaga, Spain, which is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, I was amazed to learn that he had an output of over 20, 000 pieces of art. He developed different styles of painting, including Cubism. In the Louvre Museum, Paris, which has over 6,000 European paintings, ranging from the 13th century to the 19th century, we saw the famous painted by the Italian artist Leonardo da Vinci. It is said that this masterpiece is so valuable that it is difficult to calculate what its price would be. Monet, a French painter, sought to show movement and the feelings of the moment through the use of colours, light and shadow. In Amsterdam, we visited the Van Gogh Museum. His early paintings used a style called Impressionism and later he created more abstract artwork. Sadly, he received little reward while he was alive. He only sold one painting before he died in 1890. But today, van Goghs paintings are worth upwards of millions of dollars each.,去年我和父母一起去了欧洲进行了一次奇妙的旅行。 The moon had gone behind a cloud and there werent many stars in the sky. She made important discoveries about genes and chromosomes (染色体)Barbara McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her family moved to the Brooklyn area of New York City in 1908. Barbara was an active child with interests in sports and music. She also developed an interest in science. She studied science at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Barbara was among a small number of undergraduate students to receive training in genetics in 1921. Years later, she noted that few college students wanted to study genetics.Barbara McClintock decided to study botany, the scientific study of plants, at Cornell University. She completed her undergraduate studies in 1923. McClintock decided to continue her education at Cornell. She completed the masters degree in 1925. Two years later, she finished all her requirements for the doctorate degree.McClintock stayed at Cornell after she completed her education. She taught students botany. The 1930s was not a good time to be a young scientist in the United States. The country was in the middle of the great economic depression. Millions of Americans were unemployed. Male scientists were offered jobs. But female geneticists were not much in demand. An old friend from Cornell, Marcus Rhoades, invited McClintock to spend the summer of 1941 working at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It is a research center on Long Island, near New York City. McClintock started a temporary job with the genetics department. A short time later, she accepted a perpetual position in the laboratory and got continual incomes. This gave her the freedom to continue her research without repeatedly asking for financial aid.By the 1970s, her discoveries had had an effect on everything from genetic engineering to cancer research. McClintock won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1983 for her discovery of the ability of genes to change positions on chromosomes. She was the first American woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize.语篇解读:本文主要讲述了著名女科学家芭芭拉麦克林托克的经历以及她在基因和染色体研究方面取得的重大成就。1Why was McClintock awarded a Nobel Prize?ABecause she received a degree in genes and chromosomes.BBecause she contributed to the development of genetic engineering and cancer research.CBecause she made important discoveries about genes and chromosomes.DBecause she was the first American woman that studied genes and chromosomes.解析:选C细节理解题。根据第一段的第二句和最后一段的第二句可知,芭芭拉麦克林托克在基因与染色体方面的研究发现让她获得了诺贝尔奖。故选C。2When did McClintock get a doctorate degree?AIn 1921.
