living, modern people have more chances to use english. because writing is one of the most important ways of language, great interests have been shown in english writing by second language learners. the scores of english writing have been raised every year. english writing produces a marked effect. so we say that english writing is very important for us. but in the middle school, the studentsenglish writing is a weak link. writing faces to many difficulties and problems in the english learning. i have taken some measures to improve their writing ability in many respects. first i necessary to give guidance on the studentswriting and it is quite important for the students to practice writing more. students have to face many different situations in which they should write in english. they ought to take notes or write some summaries after they read or listen some materials. some students prefer to communicate with others through writing notes or letters. in discussion, some students want to write down their speech outline or even the whole script. some students even like to write good articles to express their feelings or points of view. as we all know, english writing has more and more important position as a communication tool. besides, the english writing marks increases step by step in the examination. so, how to improve writing ability has always been paid much attention. this paper wants to find out some effective methods to improve writing according to my experience.ii.the importances of improving the middle school students english writing abilityas is known to us all, all the students have to write english compositions when they are having an english examination. so writing plays a very important role in many aspects for middle school students.writing can give a voice to shy students as writing can serve as medium through which less confident students can communicate with their teachers and others. moreover, writing can be less threatening for anxious students as it gives them time to think about their meaning and purpose written language is a form of language communication as same as spoken language. writing is an important communication ability to use written language.it is a kind of language skill as the same as listening, speaking and reading. the four basic skills are complementary to each other. if one of them is weak, the other three skills will be affected . developing the writing ability can combine with some activities of listening, speaking and reading.the purpose of middle school english teaching is to improve the students english listening, speaking, reading and writing. but now most of students think that writing composition in english is difficult. they can hardly express themselves with their own words. some of them write composition in english, just according to the chinese meaning word by word. we should pay more attention to middle school studentsenglish writing.2.1 writing serves as a tool in teaching all language skills. it can be integrated with the teaching of listening comprehension, oral presentation, and reading skills.王青(wang qing). “培养中学生英语写作能力的探索与实践”.中小学外语教学,2002 (2): 32-36 for example, making notes and writing summaries can be used in teaching listening comprehension, writing outlines and scripts can be used for the preparation of oral presentation, and writing can be integrated with the teaching of reading skills by asking the students to write answers to reading comprehension questions. 2.2 writing may be a goal in itself. since writing is often required for passing a particular examination, from writing simple answers at an elementary level to composing essays at an advanced level, teaching writing can surely help meet studentsneeds in fulfilling their full course of study. 2.3 writing has its practical value. it can be used as stimulus in motivating students to learn the language. for example, if they have access to internet, they may be able to communicate with others around the world in english wherever they are. they may find writing useful in applying for further study opportunities as well as in looking for a better job since many jobs require applicants to have good command of written english. iii. the relationship of the four skills nowadays, english writing becomes more and more important in the middle school english teaching. there are four basic skills in process of english learning. they are listening , speaking , reading and writing. they are mutually related to each other and permeated by each other. reading and listening are to comprehend studentsexpression. it is a process from the external language to internal language. speaking and writing are to express their own ideas with language. it is a process from the internal language to external language. so writing ability is based on the ability of reading and listening. ren xiaoping . listening barriers among chinese students and training tactics j.延安教育学院学报,2001 . p1-2 at the same time, the training of writing can go a step further for the improvement of reading and listening ability. in my opinion, in order to improve writing ability, it is very important to improve other abilities. it is meaningful for the students to train these four abilities. so we should penetrate writing in the whole teaching process combining it with reading, listening, speaking and so on.iv. problemsat present, the purpose of middle school english teaching is to improve studentsskills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. however, the teachers and the students yield to the examinations, which result in many problems in english learning, particularly in english writing. we should try our best to find where the english writing problems are in order to solve them in the best ways. by teaching, i find the main problems of our english writing as following.4.1 pay no attention to writing. teachers and students think it is not important to practice writing in junior one and junior two. they prefer tactics for the examination of entering schools of a higher grade. writing is not taught systematically to students, such as how to choose words, make sentences, organize paragraphs, conceive the whole essay and so on.4.2 problems in making sentences. our students always make grammar mistakes in writing and they do not make sentences in english. this is a common problem because english is different from chinese in grammar structure and language customs. so most students do not how to write a complete composition with the easiest words.4.3 lack of vocabularies,the logic abilities and imagination abilities.the students usually can not write a complete composition because of their small vocabularies. sometimes, the teachers cannot understand what they write or what they want to express beause of too many wrong words and missing words. meanwhile, they also lack of the abilities of expressing their ideas in other ways.moreover, they do not know how to make up a complete or better composition with the sentences because they lack of the logic abilities and the imagination abilities to beautify their composition.because of the above reasons, some students can not write english compositions well, and even they are in dread of writing. consequently, very few students can use english to express their own ideas skillfully. in the long run, this causes the vicious circles. so the teachers should pay more attention to the students writing in english teaching. it is very necessary to give guidance on the studentswriting and it is quite important for the students to practice writing more. at the same time, students should also do their best to improve the writing ability.v. methods of improving studentswriting abilityas an english teacher, i often ask my students to read more. when they read, they can try their best to find what kind of grammar structures the sentences contain. they even try their best to think if they can make similar sentences. meanwhile, they can also find what kind of compositions they read and think if they can write similar composition.besides, i also ask them to try their best to memorize the new words or guess the meanings when they read. they can make signs when they meet the new words. the more they do like that, the more they master and learn. gradually, they will find they are enlarging their vocabularies when they are reading. and they will not feel that they have many new words when they write compositions.they can cultivate their own hobbies and imagination abilities. when they write, they can try their best to put what they learn from the hobbies and what they imagine into practice. by doing so, their composition will be better and more practice and find more better writing ways.5.1 train the ability of listening to improve writingchoose a suitable listening material for the students. playing the recorder in class, ask them to listen to it repeatedly after class. have a dictation in class and check the work to give a mark. teachers should keep doing this once a week to improve the ability of writing. in order to improve the ability of listening and help the students get more information to lay solid foundation in english, we choose new concept english as listening materials, this course attempts to practice all the theories into practice about language. it trains the studentsskills in understanding, speaking, reading and writing. it is used to train the students systematically to write english.5.2 centering around the text to improve writingnow, the text is an excellent material for the student to improve their integrated skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. train the studentsability through the following ways.5.2.1 have a dictationthe words are to the article what the bricks are to the building. if you don not know to write eight words in a ten- word sentence, you will not express your ideas. so vocabulary is very important for the studentswriting. the vocabulary in the teaching material is selected scientifically. they are very important and basic vocabularies for the students.at present, the middle school teaching material is more difficult than before. it has larger vocabulary. in the reading of each unit, there are a few main words. i will write them on the blackboard. i will read them and let the students repeat and pay attention to the pronunciation. i use the words to make the sentences to show the students how to use them.in each reading, there are many useful expressions and idioms. it is useful for the students to underline and remember them. in unit4 finding your way, there are many useful expressions and idiomas. such as go straight on, lie down, all day long, jump around, make people laugh, help them eat the leaves from trees, cross the bridge,and you will see the elephants and so on. it is meaningful for the students in their own writing.5.2.2 read, recite, and retell the textin general,for a student, the amount of reading and listening should be over ten times that of speaking and writing. if the students can manage it, they will express their ideas freely by speaking and writing.after finishing a lesson, i play the recorder in class and students listen and repeat. after that, i divide the class into groups or in pairs to read the text. a competition will be held between groups and pairs. as a result ,each student read actively for a community spirit.in teaching, i always require students to recite the text. after assigning, i will have a check in the next class. it is one of my requirements that each student has to pass the recitation. so many students come to recite on their own. some better students can recite to each other and tell me the result quickly. in the end, i have a dictation of a paragraph to check their command of the text. if there is a shortcut to the study of english, it must be recitation. recitation and imitation are the “foolish” ways, but they are the best way. it is self-evident for the students to command the vocabulary, the rules of grammar and sentence patterns.after finishing the text, it is very important for the students to retell the text with their own words. write a number or brief notes on the blackboard summarizing the subject-matter of the text.5.2.3 summary writingmy aim is to train the students to make statements which are based directly on the passage the students have read. the student is required to derive specific information from each passage (comprehension) which he well put together to form a paragraph (summary). the amount of help he is given to do this gradually diminishes. wang meirui, wang weizhong, li naier. “use sentences in writing.” english composition, 2002 (2): 1-3 in these exercises, the students will learn to write a summary. it is a progressive process to improve the ability of the studentswriting. 5.3 reading widely to improve writingif you want to write a good essay, you have to read a great many excellent ones. so it is very necessary for the students to read widely.5.3.1 remember wonderful expressionsi often advise students which reading material is suitable for them. require the students to make extracts of useful expressions and wonderful sentences to learn by heart. make conscious efforts to use them into their own writing and check it read widely.5.3.2 find the differences between chinese and englishtrain the studentsspeed of reading and find the differences between chinese and english. let students read an article in three or five minutes, then let them answer some questions to check their comprehension. help the students to find useful language points. it is very useful for the students to accumulate the vocabulary. this can help the students realize the differences between english sentences and chinese sentences. connecting words and substitutive words is used frequently in english.5.4 practice writing more as we say “practice makes perfect.” learning a language or skill, the most effective way is to practice it. to us english learners, if we want to master a language including mastering all its skills, we must think something in it and express some in it. karl marx ever said, “when you are learning a foreign language, you must learn to forget your native language.” that is to say. when we are learning foreign language, we must put ourselves into an atmosphere of foreign language. if we want to improve the studentsability, we have to require them to practice writing step by step. in order to realize the aim, i take the following steps.5.4.1 keep a diary in englishkeeping a diary in english is one of the effective ways to improve our english writing ability. it can help us to cultivate the habit of thinking in english. he xiulan, wang longdi. “keep diaries for writing”.
