and equality, independence from the man and so on. the image of jane eyre is not only favored by numerous readers very much, but also regarded as an exemplifier for women all the time. it is worth to search out reasons which contribute to her good personalities so that in the modern time, modern woman also can be aware of the importance of independence and equality. . a brief introduction to womens position in the 19 centuryin the 19 century, in england there were three chartist movements, which attracted millions of labors to take part in to fight for equal rights. in order to put down the workers movements, the british government took some reform measures on surface, such as adopting the system of ten-hour work. but womens status in society had not been improved. the problem of equality between men and women was unsolvable at that time. this contradiction in bourgeois society stimulated the womens demand of getting rid of oppression and discrimination from men. it was hard for women to get their deserved social position. as for women living in the upper class, they often chose to marry rich men or accompany their parents. as for women in the lower class, they had to work in the farms or factories. the cruelty of the society drove the female to subvert this unfair reality. so in the novel jane eyre represents the new feminine image which the majority of female want to be. as an orphan, she doesnt submit to the unfair fate. instead, she pursues her ideal happiness with the independent mind and action, which expresses females desires to pursue their own happiness rather than obeying the cruel society at that time. through this orphan girls seeking happy life,it reflects the demand of women of shaking off oppression and discrimination and struggling for freedom and equality. the new feminine image of jane eyre favored by readers exerts significant influence on the society, stimulating female to be free from traditional binds. . the analysis of janes personality from spiritual aspects2.1 the rebellion against the unfair treatment and oppressionjane eyre first appears an orphan lodging with her aunt, who resents her and shamelessly favors her own three children. she always suffers cold shoulder and accusation from others. jane eyre cant tell others her minds so that she always keeps her complainment in her heart. however, she has strong dignity and self-respect when facing unequal treatment. instead of yielding to the unfair treatment, she is confronting the unreasonable beating of her overbearing brutal cousin, john. it is human dignity and sanctity that make little jane has so much courage to fight against her benefactors son. she cant endure that the trample of human dignity just because she is an orphan. the rebellion makes her learn to use severe and critical ways to deal with the ill treatment and humiliation from her aunt, which is out of step with her little age. it proves that jane has a strong sense of human dignity.when there happens a quarrel between her and mrs. reed, mrs. reed thinks she could make jane frightened by her authority and status. on the contrary, jane eyre is brave to say: “i am not a liar. if i were, i shall say i love you, but i declare i dont love you, i hate you.” after experiencing the red room, the fear always haunts her mind that the ghost of her uncle is in the red room. so she wants to threaten her aunt by saying that her uncle and her parents could see everything in the heaven and know you treat me very ill. her aunt is frightened with her pale face, leaving in a hurry. janes wisdom gives herself the chance to rebel against the oppression in order to survive in the unfair environment. 2.2 the cultivation of self-reliance and self-respectin lowood, jane doesnt yield to the difficult life. she sympathizes with the weak and hates the hypocrite who humiliates them, especially brocklehurst. she says to her good friend helen burns: “when we are struck without a reason, we should strike back again very hard; i am sure we should do so hard to teach the person who struck us never to do it again.” it is the rebel independent spirit that makes her exist in difficult environment. during this period, there are two persons who have a great influence upon jane, miss temple and helen burns. miss temple is the incarnation of justice and charity, using a profound and extensive heart to help helen burns comprehend absurdity of the world, the shortcoming and weakness of human nature by a broad heart. under their guidance, jane eyre gains extensive knowledge, which makes her independent acting as a teacher. she supports the freedom theory of femininity that if women are given equal civil right, and the opportunity of education and employment, they will obtain the same status as men. jane acts as a governess to sustain herself instead of relying on man, only because she thinks it is the foundation of her self-respect.2.3 the struggle for equal statusas a tutor, she knows what status and identity she is in. she is an independent worker. when facing the master, she is neither frivolous nor obsequious. in generous manner, she answers his questions without hypocritical feeling. she attracts mr rochester deeply by her extraordinary stubbornness and independent spirit power. when she knows mr rochester is going to marry miss ingrain. though she has demands for love, she makes a strong protest because her emotion and human dignity are humiliated. “do you think, because i am poor, obscure, plain and little, i am soulless and heartless. you are wrong! i have as much soul as you and full as much heart! and if god gives me with beauty and much wealth, i should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you. it is my spirit that addresses your spirit; we are equal”. what are important for jane eyre are not numerous family estate or celebrated family status but equality and dignity. she is unwilling to become accessory like other women. what she demands is independent working as a tutor. in her eye, economical independence is the pillar of the independence of human dignity. she will not have the feeling of human dignity and equality unless the economy is independent. it also reflects a fact that the status of female is very low. this unfair reality stimulate female to pursue economical independence in order to win the independence of human dignity. the analysis of janes values towards love from emotional aspects3.1 keeping dignity and equality in lovea happy and perfect love is smashed by a lunatic woman arising suddenly. when jane knows rochester has a wife alive, her spirit collapses. at this time jane eyre confronts a severe test whether she gives up human dignity to become rochesters mistress or not. for jane eyre who has intense self-respect and independent human dignity, how painful she gives up her love! even so, she prefers to endure the torment of emotion through giving up material enjoyment. in order to maintain her human dignity instead of losing herself, she leaves resolutely. she is willing to drift alone rather than giving up self-respect and independence. in british society of 19 century making such a choice is undoubtedly astonishing for a plain woman who has no social status. she flees from thornfield, in order to maintain human dignity. though she loses much by her leaving, she wins back her dignity and self-respect.3.2 having a reasonable and decisive mindin moor, she is saved by a priest st john and his two sisters. with their help, she becomes a teacher in primary school once again. she is working so hard for gaining independence upon life. similarly, when st john proposes her moor house, she also refuses. though st john is a good person as a clergyman, he thinks himself as the messenger of god, making jane the tool of missionary work. he makes an offer of marriage to jane only because he thinks jane is suitable for missionarys wife. if jane eyre obeys his demanding, it is equal to give up independent human dignity. jane eyre recognizes him not as her ideal lover.3.3 pursuing the mutual loveowing to her refusal to johns marriage, jane eyre wants to get together with rochester in her heart. at that time, she has property, which means that she has equal status in economy. in fact, rochester loses sight in a fire. nothing is left, but jane eyre believes that it is the beginning of their love. she can get along with rochester without any hesitation. she can get married with rochester with real equal status. jane eyre ultimately gains a happy life. it is seldom in british society at that time, especially for jane who owns nothing and has a plain appearance. because of her pursuit of happiness, jane eyre comes true her goal. the succes
