We can use telephone to make or break social engagements, to do our shopping and ordering, and to obtain all kinds of information. Telephones can save our feet and endless amounts of time. But giving and receiving phone calls requires quick responses, and it is very important to get exact information from calls. To avoid misunderstandings, we should pay close attention to things like telephone numbers, times, dates, addresses, etc. *to make or break social engagements: 预订或取消社会活动 *to do our shopping and ordering:购物或下订单 *save our feet and endless amounts of time:省去很多脚力和时间 *quick responses:快速应对 A. The following words and phrases will appear in this unit. All of them are related to the telephone and some are frequently used when giving and receiving phone calls. Sometimes, however, you are not able to get through and the reason is given by a recorded message. *dial a telephone number: 拨打一个电话号码 *a recorded message: 电话录音 A. You are going to hear some recordings that the telephone company uses to tell you why your call did not go through. Listen carefully and write down all the telephone numbers you hear and the reasons why the calls did not go through. Instead, the call might be answered by a machine. An answering machine answers calls with a tape recording, and many answering machines also allow the caller to record a message. You are going to hear several calls that are answered by machines. Listen to the recorded messages. Write down the reasons why each call is being answered by a machine instead of a person and the actions you decide to take. Write “W” for “wait on the line”, “L” for “leave a message”, and “C” for “call back later”. Sometimes they have to make a note of the information contained in the call particularly when the call is for someone else. Message taking is one of the most useful skills in dealing with telephone calls. A great deal of practice is needed in this respect. *message taking: 信息记录 C1. Operator: The number is 4472023. Woman A: Thank you. (Sound of hanging up and coin returned.) I dont believe it! I dialed the wrong exchange. I dialed 477 instead of 447. Woman B: Yeah, Ive done that, too. (Sound of coin being inserted) Woman A: (Dialing.) Well, lets try it again. Recording: Twenty-five cents, please. Please deposit twenty-five cents for the first one minute. Woman A: Hey, Marilyn, have you got a quarter? Woman B: Yeah, I think so. Woman A: Never mind. I found one. (Sound of coin being inserted. Then busy signal.) Woman A: (Sound of hanging up and coin returned.) Oh, boy. Her phones busy. Woman B: Cmon. Lets walk to the restaurant. You can try again from there. Woman A: OK, but if I cant reach her to tell her Ill be late. I cant have lunch with you. Shell kill me if she has to wait for me. Woman B: OK, but I wanna have lunch anyway, so lets go. The call gets through but no one answers the phone. 9. There will probably be a telephone at the restaurant. 10. The callers cousin wont be angry if she has to wait. Audioscript Aside: There are an estimated 8 million people in the five boroughs of New York. 12 million in the greater metropolitan area. There are almost 10 million telephone exchange lines. Over 50 phone services. 3 million New Yorkers are cell phone users. It used to be a mark of insanity to see people talk to themselves. Now its a mark of status. And speed dial is quickly replacing the drop of a coin. Despite increased usage of cellular devices, an estimated 4.5 million residents and 2 million visitors still utilize pay phones on a regular basis. This is the telephone booth at 53rd and 8th, perhaps the last vestige of privacy on Manhattans West Side. It is the last booth of its type, still in regular operation. Up to 300 calls daily originate here. This location has been burglarized 41 times in the last six months. Verizon has scheduled this structure to be torn down and replaced with a kiosk as of 8 a.m. tomorrow. Hardly two blocks away, meet the man who is to be the final occupant of that booth. . Pam: Hello.
