The status and the function 教材分析与学情分析The purpose of this reading is to introduce the life and work of Charlie Chaplin and the kind humor we can all laugh at -nonverbal humor. This lesson is designed as a reading lesson. According to the new curriculum standards of senior high school English, students are expected to achieve the skills of understanding the main idea; scanning for the needed information; grasping the details; guessing the meaning of new words from the context; understanding the intension and attitude of the author and understanding the background and culture information.Generally speaking, it is not difficult for the students to understand the text, but there are some new phrases and sentences that may be a little bit difficult. So before the students first reading, I will explain the new words and phrases briefly and after reading the whole passage, I will embody the usage of the new words and phrases, and get the students to understand the difficult sentences.2.Teaching objectives教学目标Knowledge objectives知识目标1. Understand the meaning and structure of the text.2. Grasp some useful words and expressions.Ability objectives能力目标1. Develop the students reading skills.2. Learn to use some reading strategies such as skimming, scanning, information-gathering, summarizing and guessing the new words from the text.Moral objectives情感目标1. Know the differences between English humor and Chinese humor.2. Remember a deceased master of nonverbal humor-Charlie Chaplin.3. Learn to hold a positive attitude towards life.3.The important points & the difficult points教学重点难点1. Grasp the new words and phrases of the text.2. Get the students learn different reading skills as scanning, skimming, information-gathering and summarizing.3. Independent reading三Teaching procedure教学过程Step 1: Lead-in & pre-reading (7 minutes)Three activities:1.In order for students to get into the topic of humor quickly and smoothly, a piece of sketch video “Eating noodles” by Chen Pei Si will be played for the students. Question: Do you know who the Chinese comedian is? (Chen Pei Si) 2. (Show some pictures of Charlie Chaplin to students) Questions: Do you know who he is? What do you know about Charlie Chaplin?3. What do you expect to learn about from this reading? Step 2: While Reading (22 minutes)1. Fast Reading (7 minutes)Task 1: Whats the passage mainly about?Task 2: Read to summarize the main idea of each paragraph and match the paragraph with its main idea. 2. Careful reading ( 15 minutes)Task 1: Read the passage again and then fill in the chart. Task 2: Work in pairs to read for the following difficulties. Step 3 : Consolidation(10 minutes) Retell the passage with the help of the following form.Step 4: Post reading ( 5minutes)Part 1: Joke 1 Wife talking to her husband (who reads newspaper all day): I wish I were a newspaper so Ill be in your hands all day. Husband: I wish that too, so I could change you dailyJoke 2Toms Excuse Teacher: Tom, why are you late for school every day? Tom: Every time I come to the corner, a sign says, School-Go Slow.Part 2: Show the students some pictures of nonverbal humor to let them appreciate. (Omitted)Step
