No matter how perfect your English is, learning the local culture and customs is definitely a lesson that can not be skipped. Otherwise, lots of confusion and embarrassment can be on the way. But fortunately it is something that we can work on. Here are some culture shock scenarios that we should be aware of in the UK: 1. To begin with, the correct way to greet your friends is how are you?, rather than have you had your meal? in a Chinese way. 2. When receiving compliments，you are supposed to reply with thank you here. Whereas in China, people often try to reject compliments in order to show their modesty. 3. As for excuse me and sorry, they are not applied only when you have made a serious mistake. You use them whenever you cause any inconvenience, such as a sneeze, getting in the way，or asking others to repeat. 4. You are appreciated here to hold the door for the people behind you. But you can serve the drinks for yourself before serving others, which is considered to be impolite in China to put yourself first. 5. You are encouraged to open the present in front of the sender. However, it is more common in China to open the present after the sender leave. 6. When meeting new friends, remember to smile and be sociable. Chinese people appear to be more reserved and serious when meeting strangers for the first time. But it is important here to give a friendly impression at the very beginning. 7. Certain kinds of topics are taken more sensitive than in China. People here will not be pleased when you are digging out the details about their private life, age, and salary. 8. Talking Chinese in front of foreigners is not polite. This will make them uncomfortable as they cannot understand a word. 9. Going to the pubs or a night out is the most common way to socialize here. So take the offer when being invited. It means they want to know more about you as friends. 10. Try to lower your voice down in the public places. Very often you can only hear the sound of the newspapers on the tube, and I guess you do not want to spoil that moment of peace. I only named a few above that is most common in Britain, there are still to be more for you to find out and add to the culture shock list. Unit 3 MoviesThe Academy Foundation was established with the purpose of organizing and overseeing the educational and cultural activities of the motion picture industry, including the preservation of its history and the promotion of its future. The concept of the Academy Foundation was first discussed at a meeting in September, 1942, by Charles Coburn, George Stevens, Farciot Edouart, Walter Wanger and Darryl Zanuck. However, it was not until January 31, 1944, that articles of incorporation were filed. The Foundations first trustees, under the leadership of Walter Wanger, included Jean Hersholt, Mary C. McCall Jr., Howard Hawks and Cary Grant. One of the first projects of the Academy Foundation was the sponsorship of the Paper Print Project. Between 1896 and 1912 more than 3,000 films in the form of paper prints were deposited with the Library of Congress for copyright purposes. In 1953, at the request of the Library, the Academy Foundation undertook the funding of the transfer of these prints to safety film, and thus ensured that the earliest work of the motion picture industry was available for study by students and scholars. More recent years have seen the extraordinary growth of the Center for Motion Picture Study, home of the Academys Margaret Herrick Library and the Academy Film Archive, as well as a broad expansion of the Foundations public film programs and the Academy Foundation Lecture Series. As the cultural and preservational arm of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Foundation is partially supported by its parent institution6. It is a Non-private Foundation, designated by the I.R.S. as a Public Charity under section 170(b)(1)(A)(vi) of the I.R.S. Code. Most of the personal papers, films, scripts, documents and other film industry artifacts in the Foundations collections have been donated by individuals and institutions concerned about the preservation of motion picture history.
