The passage is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A),B),C) and D), You should decide on the best choice.Passage 1Taste is such a subjective matter that we dont usually conduct preference tests for food. The most you can say about anyones preference is that its one persons opinion. But because the two big cola companies-Coca-Ccla and Pepsi Cola-are marketed so aggressively, weve wondered how big a role taste preference actually plays in brand loyalty. We set up a taste test that challenged people who identified themselves as either Coca-Cola or Pepsi fans: Find your brand in a blind tasting. We invited staff volunteers who had a strong liking for either Coca-Cola Classic or Pepsi, Diet Coke, or Diet Pepsi. These were people who thought theyd have no trouble telling their brand from the other brand. We eventually located 19 regular cola drinkers and 27 diet cola drinkers. Then we fed them four unidentified samples of cola one at a time, regular colas for the one group, diet versions for the other. We asked them to tell us whether each sample was Coke or Pepsi; then we analyzed the records statistically to compare the Participants choices with what mere guesswork could have accomplished.Getting all four samples right was a tough test, but not too tough, we thought, for people who believed they could recognize their brand. In the end, only 7 out of 19 regular cola drinkers correctly identified their brand of choice in all four trials. The diet-cola drinkers did a little worse-only 7 out of 27 identified all four samples correctly. While both groups did better than chance would predict, nearly half the participants in each group made the wrong choice two or more times. Two people got all four samples wrong. Overall, half the participants did about as well on the last round of tasting as on the first, so fatigue, or taste burnout, was not a factor. Our preference test results suggest that only a few Pepsi participants and Coke fans may really be able to tell their favorite brand by taste and price.31.According to the passage the preference test was conducted in order to _.A.find out the role taste preference plays in a persons drinkingB.reveal which cola is more to the liking of the drinkersC.show that a persons opinion about taste is mere guessworkD.compare the ability of the participants in choosing their drinks32.The statistics recorded in the preference tests show_.A.Coca-Cola and Pepsi are peoples two most favorite drinksB.There is not much difference in taste between Coca-Cola and PepsiC.Few people had trouble telling Coca-Cola from PepsiD.Peoples tastes differ from one another33.It is implied in the first paragraph that_.A.the purpose of taste test is to promote the sale of colasB.the improvement of quality is the chief concern of the two cola companiesC.the competition between the two colas is very strong D.blind tasting is necessary for identifying fans34.The underlined word “brunout” (Para. 5)here refers to the state of _.A.being seriously burnt in the skinB.being unaable to burn for lack of fuelC.being badly damaged by fireD.being unable to function because of excessive use35.The authors purpose in writing this passage is to _.A.show that taste preference is highly subjectiveB.argue that taste tasting is an important marketing strategyC.emphasize that taste and price are closely related to each otherD.recommend that blind tasting be introduced in the quality control of colasPassage 2I never carry a map when I travel. I prefer to ask for directions. Sometimes I lose my way, but I usually have a good time. I can learn a new language and meet new people. I find out different “styles” of directions every time I ask, “How can I get to the post office?”Foreign travelers are often confused in Japan because most streets there dont have names. The Japanese will say to travelers. “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and to past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”People in Los Angeles, the United States, have no idea of distance on the map: they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh.” they answer, “its about five minutes from here.” You say. “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They dont know.In Greece where the Greek language is spoken, people sometimes do not even try to give directions because travelers may not know Greek. A Greek will often say, Follow me.” Then hell lead you through the street of the city to the post office.Sometimes a person doesnt know the answer to your question. What happens in this situation? A New Yorker might say. “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Mexico, no one answers “I dont know” People there believe that “I dont know ” is not polite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one.36. The author doesnt carry a map when he travels because _A. he doesnt buy a mapB. he cant read a mapC. he prefers to ask for directions D. he wont lose his way37. In four days it destroyed more than three-quarters of the old city, where most of the houses were wooden and close together. One hundred thousand people became homeless, but only a few lost their lives. The fire started on Sunday morning in the house of the Kings baker(面包师)in Pudding Lane. The baker, with his wife and family, was able to get out through a window in the roof. A strong wind blew the fire from the bakery(面包房)into a small hotel next door. Then it spread quickly into Thames Street. That was the beginning. By eight oclock three hundred houses were on fire. On Monday nearly a kilometer of the city was burning along the River Thames. Tuesday was the worst day. The fire destroyed many well-known buildings, old St Pauls and the Guildhall among them.Samuel Pepys, the famous writer, wrote about the fire. People threw their things into the river. Many poor people stayed in their houses until the last moment. Birds fell out of the air because of the heat. The fire stopped only when the King finally ordered people to destroy hundreds of buildings in the path of the fire. With nothing left to burn, the fire became weak and finally died out. After the fire, Christopher Wren, the architect(建筑师), wanted a city with wider streets and fine new houses of stone. In fact, the streets are still narrow; but he did build more than fifty churches, among them new St Pauls. The fire caused great pain and loss, but after it London was a better place: a city for the future and not just of the past.41.The fire began in _.A. a hotel B. the palace C. Pudding Lane D.
