We had not suffered much from the war there. But both at home and at school I had become accustomed to the phrases “before the war” and “when the wars over”. “Before the war”, apparently, things had been better, though I was too young to understand why, except that there had been no bombs then, and people had eaten things like ice-cream and bananas, which I had only heard of. When the war was over we would go back to London, but this meant little to me. I did not remember what London was like. What I remember now about VE (Victory in Europe) Day was the May evening. After dinner I said I wanted to see the bonfire(大火堆), so when it got dark my father took me to the end of the street. The bonfire was very high, and somehow people had collected some old clothes to dress the unmistakable figure(人形) with the moustache they had to put on top of it. Just as we arrived, they set light to it. The flames rose and soon swallowed ( 吞噬) the “guy”. Everyone was cheering and shouting, and an old woman came out of her house with two chairs and threw them on the fire to keep it going.I stood beside my father until the fire started to go down, not knowing what to say. He said nothing, either. He had fought in the First World War and may have been remembering the end of that. At last he said, “Well, thats it, son. Lets hope that this time it really will be the last one.”21. Where did the author live before the Second World War?A. In London. B. In a small town.C. In Europe. D. In the countryside.22. What kind of food had the author certainly not tasted during the war?A. Bread. B. Butter.C. Meat. D. Ice-cream and bananas.23. The unmistakable figure with the moustache most probably represents_.A. those who died in the war B. those who had wonC. an imaginary figure D. the most hated person in the war- Hitler24. Which of the following statements is true?A. The authors father built a bonfire on VE Day.B. The authors father had fought in the First World War.C. The authors father had fought in the Second World War.D. The authors father threw two chairs on the fire to keep it going.25. By saying, “Lets hope that this time it really will be the last one”, the father meant that_.A. he wished people had not built the bonfireB. he hoped people would not build any more bonfireC. he hoped there would be no more wars in the worldD. he wished the Second World War had not happenedPassage TwoThe United States is a country made up ofmany different races (种族) . Usually they are mixed together and cant be told from one another. But many of them still talk about where their ancestors (祖先) came from. It is something they are proud of.The original Americans, of course were the Indians. The so-called white men who then came were mostly from England. But many came from other countries like Germany and France. One problem the United States has always had is discrimination (歧视) . As new groups came to the United States they found they were discriminated against. First it was the Irish and Italians. Later it was the blacks. Almost every group has been able to finally escape this discrimination. The only immigrants who have not are the blacks. Surprisingly enough the worst discrimination today is shown towards the Indians. One reason the Indians are discriminated against is that they have tried so hard to keep their identity. Of course they are not the only ones who have done so. The Japanese have their Little Tokyo in Los Angeles and the Chinese a Chinatown in New York. The Dutch settlement in Pennsylvania also stays separate from other people. Their towns are like something from the 19th century. They have a different reason from the other groups for staying separately. They live separately for religious reasons rather than keep together in a racial group.Although some groups have kept themselves separate and others have been discriminated against, all groups have helped make the United States a great county. There is no group that has not helped in some way. And there is no group that can say they have done the most to make it a great country. Many people still come from other countries to help the United States grow. A good example is the American project that let a man walk on the moon. It was a scientist from Germany who was most responsible for doing that. It is certain that in the future the United States will still need the help of people from all racial groups to remain a great country.26. Which of the following statements can best describe the main idea of this passage?A. The United States is a country made up of many different races.B. Discrimination is the most serious problem in the United States.C. All races in the United States have helped make the country a great one.D. The prosperity of the United States is mainly due to the hard work of the most discriminated races.27. In the first paragraph the word “told” means_.A. separated B. distinguishedC. revealed D. made known28. This passage implies that discrimination is a problem which _.A. many races in the United States have experiencedB. will still be very serious in the United States in the futureC. has already been solved in the United StatesD. is strongly opposed by many different races in the United States29. One reason why the Indians are most discriminated against is that_.A. they have tried hard to keep their religionsB. they are the only ones who have tried hard to live together to keep their Indian customsC. they have tried hard to keep their identityD. they discriminate against many other races30. The Dutch live separately in Pennsylvania_.A. to escape discriminationB. to keep together in a racial groupC. to enjoy themselves in their own townsD. for religious reasonsIII标音。 however ifbeneathintendforasmeanwhileprovingenabledthereforeSix men have been trapped in a mine 51 seventeen hours.
