路客英语资源网 第 篇 中外趣闻中外趣闻美文搜索1- 20 -British newspapers are much smaller than they used to be and their readers are often in a hurry, so newspapermen write as few words as possible. They tell their readers at once what happened, where, when and how it happened and what was the result: how many people were killed, what damage was done, which famous man married which woman , who did very well in the match and so on.Readers want the fact set out as fully and accurately as possible. Readers are also interested in the people who have seen the accdient. So a newspaperman always likes to get some information from someone who was there, which can be given in the persons own words . Because he can use only a few words , the newspaperman must choose those words carefully, every one must be effective. Instead of “he called out in a loud voice”, he writes “he shouted”; instead of “the loose stones rolled noisily down the side of the mountain”, he will write “they thundered down the mountainside”. In 1965, a sailor from Sweden was on a ship. He wrote a letter, asking any young woman to him. He put the letter in a bottle and threw the bottle into the sea. Two years later, a man found the bottle on a beach in Italy. He read the letter and showed it to his daughter. She was 18. As a joke, she wrote to the sailor. They began to exchange letters. In a few months, they were married. Here is the second story. Back in 1924, a boy from Arkansas wrote his name on the back of his picture. He put the picture in a bottle and dropped the bottle into a river. The bottle was not found for many years until one day a man named Bill picked it up on a beach in Florida. He pulled the picture out of the bottle and looked at it. He could hardly believe his eyes. To his great surprise, the boy in the picture was his friend, Tom, from Arkansas. Even the business government official always takes time to be polite and offer refreshments. No matter how busy you are, you should make time for this. The conference visit is a way of doing business throughout the Arab world. Very often you will have to discuss your business in the presence of strangers, who may or may not have anything to do with your business. Do not be surprised if your meeting is interrupted several times by people who come into the room without being asked, talk or speak softly to the person with whom you are talking, and leave. Act as though you do not hear, and never show that you are not pleased at being interrupted.Making decisions quickly is not an Arab custom. There is a vagueness模棱两可in doing business in the Middle East which will puzzle a newcomer. Give yourself lots of time and ask lots of questions. When an Arab says yes, he may means “maybe”. When he says maybe, he probably means “no”. You will seldom get a direct “no” from an Arab because it is considered impolite. Instead of “no”, he will say “inshallah”(听天由命), which means, “If God is willing”. On the other hand “yes” does not necessarily mean “yes”. A smile and a slow nod might seem like an agreement, but in fact, your host is polite. An Arab consider it impolite to disagree with a guest. 点评区1. manners礼貌行动 refreshment茶点 conference招待会式的 presence在场 interrupt打断 custom习俗 vagueness模棱两可 seldom难得2. And yet when you travel from one country to another, you find that people have quite different feelings about food. People often feel that what they eat is normal, and that what other people eat is strange or silly. In most part of Asia, for example, no meat is complete without rice. In England, people eat potatoes every day. In the Middle East, bread is the main part of every meal. Eating, like so many things we do, becomes a habit which is difficult to change. Americans like to drink a lot of orange juice and coffee. The English drink tea four or five times every day. Australians drink a great deal of beer, and the French drink wine every day.The sort of meat people like to eat also differs from one country to another. Horse meat is thought to be delicious in France. In Hong Kong, some people enjoy eating snakes. New Zealanders eat sheep, but they never eat goat meat. The Japanese dont like to eat sheep meat because of its smell, but they enjoy eating raw fish.So it seems that although eating is a topic we can talk about for hours, there is very little common sense in what we say about it. People everywhere enjoy eating what they have always eaten, and there is very little we can do to change our eating habits.点评区1. astonishing令人惊讶的 normal正常的 silly愚蠢的 differ与不同 raw生的 sense感觉2. We are taught how to hold a spoon and chopsticks and not to talk with our mouths full of food. We are taught how to shake hands and when to stand and when to sit and the way to introduce people. Sometimes good manners in one place are very bad manners somewhere else. Almost everywhere eating together means that you are very friendly to each other. But in parts of Polynesia, it is bad manners to be seen eating at all. They politely turn their backs on each other when they are talking food. Some East Africans spit four times as a kind of blessing. They do it to show that they want a sick person to get well, or to pless a new born baby. In most other places, spitting means just something completely different. Its something to do to show that you hate someone. When we go to visit someone, we say “hello” and “How are you?” and things like that. If you were visiting an East African village, everyone would be very careful not to pay any attention to you. The polite thing there would be for to go quietly, without speaking to anyone, and sit beside your friend. You would wait until he had finished what he was doing and then he would begin talking to you. In a village in Arab, a visitor walks behind all the tents until he gets to the one he wants to visit. If he passed in front, he would be invited into each tent and asked to eat. It was rude to refuse.点评区1. introduce介绍 Polynesia波利西亚(中太平洋岛群) blessing祝福 rude无礼2. The New York police have 170 horses working in certain parts of the city. The horses are expensive to feed, but it is even more expensive to look after them. Because the horses must walk on the streets, they need special horseshoes. In fact , they need more than 8,000 of them each year. Every police horse in New York gets new shoes every month. Keeping these shoes in good repair is the job of six blacksmiths. There are only about thirty-five of these blacksmiths in the whole United States. The cost of shoing a horse is between twenty dollars and thirty-five dollars, and it takes a good blacksmith two or three hours to do the job. A blacksmiths job is not an easy one. He must be able to shape a shoe from a piece of metal and then fit it to the horses foot. The blacksmith must bend over all the time when he is fitting the shoe and must hold the weight of the horses leg while he works. Clearly, a blacksmith must be very storng. But even more important, he must be able to deal with horses-for before the blacksmith can begin his work, he has to get the horse to lift its leg. One of the blacksmiths in New York is James Corbin. He came to the country from Ireland in 1948. He not only makes horseshoes for the police but also works for a group of horse owners near the city. Corbin became interested in blacksmithing because his father did it, and,as the puts it, “Its a good way to make a living.” 点评区1. blacksmith铁匠 fit安装 weight重量2.
