Active/Passive Voice Worksheet:Ive taken some of the following examples from Bellingham School District Websites. All the sentences are grammatically correct. Change the passive constructions to active ones. Count the number of words for each version. Feel free to split the long sentences into shorter ones. Look at whether or not the shift in voice improves the sentences.1. Many services and programs are provided by Student Services Staff. 2. Students and staff had been selected to implement innovative new programs including a rich technology curriculum, block schedule, new health and wellness curriculum, and a student-led conferencing model. 3. Your interest and involvement in our schools is encouraged. 4. Then, on July 25, just two months before the grand opening in November, Kulshan Middle School was destroyed by fire. 5. Our program is based on the belief that staff members are learners who continually improve their performance.6. A more detailed student report card can be found through the office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction. 7. The professional development section of the teaching and learning Web Site is designed to provide district personnel with an easy-to-use comprehensive on-line guide to professional development courses and events.8. (The previous sentence includes one active verb.)Sentences where the subjects are acted upon by the verb are called passive. (The previous sentence includes two passive verbs.)Only sentences with transitive verbs can change from active to passive. Transitive verbs are those that take objects. Verbs that are not transitive include the following:I am happy. The “am” is not a transitive verb. The man trembles. “Trembles” has no possible object and is not a transitive verb.Converting Passive Voice to Active VoiceReasons for Conversion:Active voice uses fewer words, making writing more concise.Active voice increases clarity.Active voice creates writing with more vigor. Active verb forms provide more strength.Methods for Changing to Active Voice:Name the verbs actor as the subject of the sentence. Turn the old subject, the recipient of the action, into the object of the sentence. Areas of Confusion:Use of the verb to be does not automatically make a sentence passive. Passive voice always uses a form of the verb to be; however, many active sentences employ “is”, “are”, “was”, “were”, etc. as helping verbs.Verbs presenting weak actions are not passive. The relationships between the subject, verb, and object determine the voice (active). The voice is determined by the relationships between the subject, verb, and object. Appropriate Situations for Use of Passive Voice:Use passive voice when the actor is unknown. (The wheel was invented
