You really do. Beethovens nine symphonies get the attention, and deservedly so, for radically changing music forever, for elevating musical expression beyond the constraints of the Classical style. Onward. Upward. Beethoven created the first truly transcendent music, radical new harmonies and forms, music where emotional expression takes primacy over form. But if the symphonies were the extravagant public face of this transformation, the 32 piano sonatas, standing as a single body of work, are the private, personal works that demonstrate Beethovens development and foreshadow the radical and sublime innovations in form and harmonic structure that would be devoured by generations of aficionados of the symphonies. So the question isnt whether or not to include the Beethoven piano sonatas in your collection, but rather which collection. Ill give my five stars the Brendel. If you are listening to a musical performance for the purposes of enjoying a virtuostic performance, you want the musician to feel free to interpret, to snub the composers purpose and motivation in the name of passion and talent. Thats precisely what you want if you are listening to Liszts Waltzes or Rachmaninoffs Preludes for example. No disrespect. (I love Liszts Waltzes but find I cant quite dance to them) But if you are listening to music to appreciate brilliant composition, then you want someone more faithful than ostentatious. Thats certainly what you want in your complete collection of Beethovens piano sonatas. (Why? Because Beethoven was a master composer, greater than any before or after by several orders of magnitude. Weve been through this before.) Thats what you get with Brendel. I saw him perform a Mozart piano concerto with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where he wrote his own cadenzas. He didnt bounce around and make funny ecstatic faces, he didnt squint and gaze off into the heavens as if receiving the music from above. He just played and played well. He wasnt a statue, he was moving around and enjoying himself but not in a showy way, just in service of the music. His personal touches were subtle. He wasnt a ham until the very end, when he came out again and again for more applause and hammed it up for an encore of his cadenzas. You dont have to thank me. Libman (Brookline, MA) April 3, 2006阿尔弗雷德布伦德尔 Alfred Brendel*注:此为Philips 二十世纪伟大钢琴家系列Alfred Brendel第二卷说明书 1931年出生于摩拉维亚北方的威森堡,六岁在扎格雷跟随德泽利克学习钢琴,接着又在格拉茨音乐院师从卡恩、私下拜师米赫尔学习作曲,并在大师班跟随费雪、包加特纳与史都尔曼学习,1948年第一次在格拉茨登台演出,1949年在布梭尼国际钢琴大赛中获奖。得奖后的布伦德尔开始在欧洲各地巡回演出,1958年首次在伦敦登台。从1960年到1963年,布伦德尔首度录下贝多芬三十二首钢琴奏鸣曲(法国唱片大奖),1973年第一次在卡内基音乐厅演出。布伦德尔从197O年起定居伦敦,巡回演出的范围也扩及到全世界。他的嗜好广泛,音乐之外也喜爱文学与视觉艺术,1976年出版音乐的观点与想法一书,1990年出版第二本书音乐之外。布伦德尔被公认是当今乐坛最重要的海登、莫扎特、舒伯特、贝多芬与李斯特音乐诠释者之一,超越国界的舒伯特与贝多芬全集更被视为重要的里程碑。目前布伦德尔是飞利浦专属音乐家,录制过多张得到奖项肯定的录音,曲目范围从巴赫广及到勋伯格。 布伦德尔的贝多芬演绎再也没有钢琴家会比布伦德尔更贴近贝多芬的音乐。布伦德尔是第一位录制贝多芬钢琴音乐全集的钢琴家(1964年)。随着对贝多芬的认识加深,布伦德尔又重新录制奏鸣曲全集两次,并在重要的音乐中心城市演出贝多芬钢琴奏鸣曲全集。多年来,布伦德尔演奏的贝多芬协奏曲、小曲与变奏曲也得到应有的重视,但是现在他又开始向自己的诠释挑战,重新录制这些已经受到肯定的作品。 贝多芬是布伦德尔演奏曲目的重心。他精于演奏巴赫、海顿与莫扎特的作品,长于诠释舒伯特、舒曼、勃拉姆斯与李斯特的音乐,是一位罕见的质量并重型钢琴家。布伦德尔最大的特色是理智,但是在智性之余,少有演奏家会察觉到音乐还可以有多种可能性。 情感必须长存于音乐家的心中,布伦德尔在1970年撰写的散文中曾经提到这一点。根据启蒙时期的美学观点,贝多芬成功的创作出兼融感官与理性、情感与思考力的音乐艺术;布伦德尔则深深被这种并容心理与外在型式的艺术所吸引。他不断提倡鼓吹贝多芬一些被误解的杰作(如:第十六、二十二号钢琴奏鸣曲),以他独特的心理学诠释观点受到重视。 贝多芬萨利耶里主题与十段变奏结合了精巧的音色控制,平静的音型、清晰的结构与鲜明的特色,当然还有年轻贝多芬少不了的即兴成份。狄亚贝里主题变奏的最高成就在于描绘出广达三十三种不同性格的变奏,布伦德尔形容这首作品是所有钢琴作品中最伟大的一首。在这首似乎无穷无尽、特色各有不同的变奏曲中,布伦德尔诠释夸张的壮丽(第一段)、狂热的妄想(第九、十与二十八段)、幽默(第十五、二十五段等)、怪诞的夸大(第二十一段)与神秘的本质(第二十段)等多样色彩。 诠释贝多芬这首富含戏剧性的不朽作品时,布伦德尔就像站在高处综观整部作品,所有手法、细节似乎都经过事先规画与安排。在此前提下,布伦德尔弹出具有圆舞曲风格的狄亚贝里主题,这段主题也预示接下来的三十三段音乐都是依据它发展。最后一段变奏是以小步舞曲写成,或许这是根据狄亚贝里旋律写出最优雅细致的变奏乐段,带有莫扎特与洛可可时期的风格。在布伦德尔最近录制的狄亚贝里主题变奏里,他把这段变奏的特色推向极致。 狄亚贝里主题变奏之外,贝多芬的六首钢琴小品也收录在这套专辑。布伦德尔诠释最美丽的地方就在于忠实弹出这些小品简朴单纯的面貌,音乐就在这样率直坦白的乐风中发展。第一首小曲是稍快的行板,乐曲从二十一小节开始变得内敛起来,不断重复由三个音符组成的音形,在流畅的旋律与交替变换的节奏中穿插颤音与短小的装饰奏。布伦德尔以改变乐曲结构的方式让音乐产生自然流泄出本身强烈抒情的错觉。在随后的再现部里,我们听到主题移到低音声部且不断努力的向高音域攀升。整首曲子完全没有压力,就是从最初的简单开始发展,在有限的时间内达到无法想象的丰富境地。 第五首近乎小快板是一首亲切温馨又严谨的小曲。请注意布伦德尔轻微地抑制住乐曲最后的节拍,特别强调它沈思的特色以便全力冲进最后一首小曲急板狂热的开始乐段。为了强调急板透明的音色,布伦德尔特意不使用踏板,所以颤音的低音降E音的共鸣变得更深。 第二十九号钢琴奏鸣曲汉马克拉维与第三十二号钢琴奏鸣曲是对钢琴这项乐器极大的挑战。贝多芬曾说,汉马克拉维是一首给钢琴家一点事做做,此后五十年它会被一直拿来演奏的作品。布伦德尔录过两版现场实况的汉马克拉维奏鸣曲。李斯特、克拉拉舒曼以及冯毕罗之后,十九世纪最后十年少有钢琴家能驾驭这首奏鸣曲。古尔德所提倡并认为应该取代现场演出的录音与剪接技术让更多钢琴家有机会挑战这样的作品,但是布伦德尔却能以现场演出来证明自己的实力。 如果不牺牲音乐的清晰度与控制力,第一乐章快板开始的速度几乎根本无法演奏,但是布伦德尔对贝多芬明显的节拍瑕疵无动于衷,活泼但不危险的节拍紧紧贴住音乐的架构,简单而且有效的解决这个问题。让人印象特别深刻的是快板乐章的发展部,它把主题重新塑造成赋格的面貌,复音与结构变得更宽广而且复杂。布伦德尔在这里尽量减少使用踏板以使音符都能个别呈现它们应有的效果。 中乐章是绵延的慢板,有人形容它是世界上所有苦难的集体坟场。随着微妙的音色控制,布伦德尔很别致的在充满激情的乐段中使用柔音踏板。这个乐章的高潮是在再现部,右手精巧地弹奏着三十二个音符组成的主题,与低音声部的和弦恰成对比却又取得完美的平衡。细腻的声音与细微的动态是让主题的变化与表现更加深刻。 第三十二号钢琴奏鸣曲第一乐章代表贝多芬著名的C小调心境的最后显现。精练的主题动机是以C降EB这三个音构成,随着最后重音与不和谐音的发展,音乐进入有活力的快板的赋格乐段。如果布伦德尔让快板乐章呈现管弦乐化的风格并让节奏再激动些,接下来的短调乐章会呈现出完全不同的声音世界。布伦德尔在这个乐章不特别强调低音,而是让高音域较先前更加响亮。 短调是由一段段变奏组成,以节奏及复音不断反复基本的主题,但是音乐的音域不断向上移动,彷佛已经快超过钢琴所弹出的最高音域。如同以往的布伦德尔,他遵照贝多芬谱面上具体的指示,但是又能以内敛的手法把曲子带到更深远的境界。伴随着高音G的颤音与左手灵妙的乐段,主题在结尾部份的高音域再现,布伦德尔让最后的和弦不是结束整首奏鸣曲,而像是开启了宁静,也就是现代人觉得最重要的声音。专辑曲目:Disc 1:1.
