河北定州中学2016-2017学年第一学期高二承智班英语周练试题(12)一、阅读理解 Life gets noisier every day and very few people can be free from noise of some sort or another. It doesnt matter where you live - in the middle of a modern city, or a faraway village - the chances are that youll be disturbed by jet planes, transistor radios, oil-powered engines, etc. we seem to be getting used to noise, too. Some people feel quite lonely without background music while theyre working.Scientific tests have shown that total silence can be a very frightening experience for a human being. However, some people enjoy listening to pop music which is very loud, and this can do harm to their eardrums (耳鼓). The noise level in some discos is far above the usual safety level for heavy industrial areas. One recent report about noise and concentration suggested that although a lot of people say that any noise disturbs their concentration, what really influences their ability to concentrate is a change in the level of noise. It goes on to say that a background noise which doesnt change too much (music, for example) may even help to concentrate.1According to this passage, the noise pollution _.A. has become the worst in the countrysideB. has become better in big citiesC. has spread from cities to villagesD. has been controlled in modern cities2Some people have their hearing harmed _.A. while listening to pop musicB. in complete silenceC. when speaking loudlyD. while watching TV3Which of the following isnt included among the things causing noise?A. trucks B. motorcyclesC. electric engines D. jet planes4Scientists have discovered that what prevents people from concentrating on something is _.A. all kinds of noise B. great changes in the level of noiseC. background noise D. popular music Londons Chinese community (社区) dates back to the 18th century, when a small number of Chinese sailors (水手) moved to the city to work in Lime house, east London. As time went on, other Chinese people came to this area and Lime house began to be known as Chinatown. At the start of the 20th century, there were just 545 Chinese people in Britain. However, this situation changed greatly after the Second World War. At this time, many farmers in Hong Kong lost their jobs, and decided to move to London. In the 1950s, a small Chinese restaurant opened in central London. Many British people visited it and said that Chinese food was wonderful. Suddenly, Chinese restaurants started opening in every part of the city. Instead of too little work, the new Chinese immigrants (移民) now found that they had too much. Most of the new immigrants enjoyed their life and the chances they were offered. Many asked their friends and relatives to join them from their hometowns, and a lot of families were reunited again at this time.As time went by, Londons Chinese community became more and more successful. The sons and daughters of the first restaurant workers, encouraged by their parents, studied very hard at school and university. And most of them could get highly-paid jobs. As a result, increasing numbers of Chinese families left Chinatown and moved to the more expensive places. Chinatown, however, is still as lively as ever, and a must see place for every visitor to London.5From the passage, we can learn that the first members of “China town” were _.A. restaurant workersB. early Chinese sailorsC. Hong Kong farmersD. visitors to London6Which of the following statements is NOT true?A. Before the 20th century, “China town” in London was still very small.B. In the 1950s, Chinese food became quite popular in Britain.C. Most of the new immigrants could find a job in the 1950s.D. With the help of the British government, Chinatown was very successful.7According to the passage, now most of the Chinese living in London _.A. are cleverB. work long hoursC. have highly-paid jobsD. live an unhappy life8Can you guess the meaning of “Chinatown”?A. 唐人街 B. 瓷器 C. 中国镇 D.中国 Does happiness have a scent? When someone is happy, can you smell it? You can usually tell when someone is happy based on seeing them smile, hearing them laugh or perhaps from receiving a big hug. But can you also smell their happiness? Surprising new research suggests that happiness does indeed have a scent, and that the experience of happiness can be transmitted through smell, reports P.For the study, 12 young men were shown videos meant to bring about a variety of emotions while researchers gathered sweat samples from them. All of the men were healthy and none of them were drug users or smokers, and all were asked to abstain from drinking or eating smelly foods during the study period. Those sweat samples were then given to 36 equally healthy young women to smell, while researchers monitored their reactions. Only women were selected to smell the samples, apparently because previous research has shown that women have a better sense of smell than men and are also more sensitive to emotional signalingthough its unclear why only men were chosen to produce the scents.Researchers found that the behavior of the women after smelling the scentsparticularly their facial expressionsindicated a relationship between the emotional states of the men who produced the sweat and the women who sniffed them.“Human sweat produced when a person is happy brings about a state similar to happiness in somebody who breathes this smell,” said study co-author Gun Semin, a professor at Koc University in Turkey. This is a fascinating finding because it not only means that happiness does have a scent, but that the scent is capable of transmitting the emotion to others. The study also found that other emotions, such as fear, seem to carry a scent too. This ensures previous research suggesting that some negative emotions have a smell, but it is the first time this has proved to be true of positive feelings.Researchers have yet to isolate(分离) exactly what the chemical compound for the happiness smell is, but you might imagine what the potential applications for such a finding could be. Happiness perfumes, for instance, could be invented. Scent therapies(香味疗法)could also be developed to help people through depression or anxiety.Perhaps the most surprising result of the study, however, is our broadened understanding of how emotions get communicated, and also how our own emotions are potentially managed through our social context and the emotional states of those around us. 9What is the main finding of the new research?A. Pleasant feelings can be smelt out.B. Negative emotions have a smell.C. Men produce more sweats.D. Women have a better sense of smell.10The underlined part “abstain from” in Paragraph 3 probably means _.A. continue B. practice C. avoid D. try11What is the application value of the new research?A. Perfumes could help people understand each other.B. Some smells could be created to improve our appearance.C. Perfumes could be produced to cure physical diseases.D. Some smells could be developed to better our mood.12We can learn from the last paragraph that .A. happiness comes from a scent of sweatB. social surroundings can influence our emotionsC. people need more emotional communicationD. positive energy can deepen understanding二、完形填空,阅读下面短文,掌握其大意,从每题所给的A、B、C、D 四个选项中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。Communication with a StrangerLast weekend I sat on the bus talking with excitement and so ready to spend time in New York City with one of my best friends from college. No relationship can last long with a lack of trust. Not many of your friends will have real faith in you as you would like to believe. 44Sometimes, it takes years, even a complete lifetime, to trust someone. However, how do we know if our friends have faith in us? 45 With whom will you share things that you dont want everyone to know? It would be with a close friend, whom you trust as much as you trust yourself. It has to be either your parents or your friends. 46 This is a shining example of trust. You only seek advice from people you hold in high regard and find dependable.
