It can reveal (揭示) laws of nature, cure diseases, make bombs, and help bridges to stand up. Indeed science is so good at what it does that theres always a temptation (诱惑) to drag it into problems where it may not be helpful. David Brooks, author of The Social Animal, The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement, appears to be the latest in a long line of writers who have failed to resist the temptation.Brooks gained fame for several books. His latest book The Social Animal, however, is more ambitious and serious than his earlier books. It is an attempt to deal with a set of weighty topics. The book focuses on big questions: What has science revealed about human nature? What are the sources of character? And why are some people happy and successful while others arent? To answer these questions, Brooks surveys a wide range of subjects. Because of this, you might expect the book to cover a variety of facts. But Brooks has structured his book in an unusual, and perhaps unfortunate way. Instead of introducing scientific theories, he tells a story, within which he tries to make his points, perhaps in order to keep the readers attention. So as Harold and Erica, the hero and heroine in his story, live through childhood, we hear about the science of child development and as they begin to date we hear about the theory of sexual attraction. Brooks carries this through to the death of one of his characters. On the whole, Brookss story is acceptable if uninspired. As one would expect, his writing is mostly clear and, to be fair, some chapters stand out above the rest. I enjoyed, for instance, the chapter in which Harold discovers how to think on his own. While Harold and Erica are certainly not strong characters, the more serious problems with The Social Animal lie elsewhere. These problems partly involve Brookss attempt to translate his tale into science. 21The author mentions the functions of science at the beginning of the passage to_.A. show the value of Brookss new bookB. show where science can be appliedC. remind the reader of the importance of scienceD. explain why many writers use science in their works22According to the author, which of the following could be a strength of the book?A. Its clear writing.B. Its convincing points.C. Its strong characters. D. Its strong basis. 23What is the authors general attitude towards the book?A. Cautious. B. Critical.C. Contradictory(矛盾的). D. Supportive. For hundreds of millions of years, turtles (海龟) have struggled out of the sea to lay their eggs on sandy beaches, long before there were nature documentaries to celebrate them, or GPS satellites and marine biologists to track them, or volunteers to hand-carry the hatchlings (幼龟) down to the waters edge lest (for fear that) they become disoriented by headlights and crawl towards a motel parking lot instead. A formidable wall of bureaucracy has been erected to protect their prime nesting on the Atlantic coastlines. With all that attention paid to them, youd think these creatures would at least have the gratitude not to go extinct (die out). But Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness, and a report by the Fish and Wildlife Service showed a worrisome drop in the populations of several species of North Atlantic turtles, notably loggerheads, which can grow to as much as 400 pounds. The South Florida nesting population, the largest, has declined by 50% in the last decade, according to Elizabeth Griffin, a marine biologist with the environmental group Oceana. The figures prompted Oceana to petition the government to upgrade the level of protection for the North Atlantic loggerheads from “threatened” to “endangered”meaning they are in danger of disappearing without additional help.Which raises the obvious question: what else do these turtles want from us, anyway? It turns out, according to Griffin, that while we have done a good job of protecting the turtles for the weeks they spend on land (as egg-laying females, as eggs and as hatchlings), we have neglected the years spend in the ocean. “The threat is from commercial fishing,” says Griffin. Trawlers (which drag large nets through the water and along the ocean floor) and longline fishers (which can deploy thousands of hooks on lines that can stretch for miles) take a heavy toll on turtles. Of course, like every other environmental issue today, this is playing out against the background of global warming and human interference with natural ecosystems. The narrow strips of beach on which the turtles lay their eggs are being squeezed on one side by development and on the other by the threat of rising sea levels as the oceans warm. Ultimately we must get a handle on those issues as well, or a creature that outlived the dinosaurs (恐龙) will meet its end at the hands of humans, leaving our descendants to wonder how creature so ugly could have won so much affection.24 We can learn from the first paragraph that _.Ahuman activities have changed the way turtles surviveBefforts have been made to protect turtles from dying outCgovernment bureaucracy has contributed to turtles extinctionDmarine biologists are looking for the secret of turtles reproduction25What does the author mean by “Nature is indifferent to human notions of fairness” (Line 1, Para. 2)?ANature is quite fair regarding the survival of turtles.BTurtles are by nature indifferent to human activities.CThe course of nature will not be changed by human interference.DThe turtle population has decreased in spite of human protection.26What constitutes a major threat to the survival of turtles according to Elizabeth Griffin?ATheir inadequate food supply.BUnregulated commercial fishing.CTheir lower reproductively ability. DContamination(pollution) of sea water27 How does global warming affect the survival of turtles?AIt threatens the sandy beaches on which they lay eggs.BThe changing climate makes it difficult for their eggs to hatch.CThe rising sea levels make it harder for their hatchlings to grow.DIt takes them longer to adapt to the high beach temperature. One of the most important things in the world is friendship. In order to have friends, you have to be a friend. You have to be with them in both good and bad times. In return, they will be there for you. But how can you be a good friend? Listen. Listen when they are talking. Keep eye contact. Dont say anything unless they ask you a question. Sometimes youre not required to have anything to say; they just need someone to talk to about their feelings. Help them. If your friends are ever in need of something, be there to help them. You should try to put them first, but make sure you dont become their slave (奴隶). Try to take an extra pencil or pen with you to classes as they may forget to take one. Have a few extra dollars in your pocket in case they forget something they need. Be there for them. Try to make something for your friends to help make them feel better in hard times. Making cards and baking things are among the nicest things you can do for a friend when they are in hard times. Marilyn Monroe once said, Im selfish, impatient (急躁的) and a little insecure. I make mistakes, and I am out of control and at times hard to deal with. But if you cant handle me at my worst, then you surely dont deserve (值得) me at my best. Always remember this! If you dont want to deal with your friends when theyre depressed, then you dont deserve to be with them during those parties where you have a good time! Try to make plans with your friends. Go shopping, go for an ice cream, have a party, go to a movie and so on. Make time to know each other even better by doing something you both enjoy. These are the things youll remember once youre all long graduated when looking back on your life!28We can learn from the passage that _.A. we must be careful when we choose our friendsB. friends should share happiness as well as problemsC. keeping long friendship is not easyD. everyone can be a good friend29What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. She was born in Virginia but was brought up in an orphanage in Yonkers, New York. Chick Webb spotted her in an amateur competition when she was sixteen. He engaged her to sing with his band and when he died in 1939, she took over.Unlike Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald taught herself the sentimental music so popular in the 1930s- songs like “My Heart Belongs to Daddy”- and her recordings became best-sellers. During the 1940s she developed her own “scat singing” - a breathless, nonsense-syllable style- for songs like “Flying Home” and “Lady Be Good.”Ella Fitzgerald was the perfect musical partner for her friend, the trumpeter Louis Armstrong, matching him in warmth and artistry. “I just like music, period,” she said. “To me, its a story. Theres only one thing better than singing. Its more singing.”32 What does the passage mainly discuss?A. A comparison of Ella Fitzgerald and Bessie Smith.B. The musical career of Ella Fitzgerald.C.
